Thermochemical Activation of Lightweight Slag–Perlite Alkali-Activated Slag (AAS): Overcoming Aggregate Brittleness and Sulfate Degradation

    Eker, Hasan; Demir Şahin, Demet

The successful realization of a circular economy in the cement industry, coupled with a substantial reduction in carbon emissions, relies on the development of sustainable alternative binder systems. This study investigated the physicomechanical performance and sulfate resistance of composites produced by alkali activation of natural perlite and blast furnace slag. The aim of the research was to improve mechanical properties under low- and medium-alkalinity conditions (5–10 M NaOH). The samples were cured at an ambient temperature of 20 °C and then treated with heat at 60 °C. These samples were then mechanically processed and subjected to five soak–dry cycles in 5% and 10% Na2SO4 solutions. The results showed that heat treatment resulted in the formation of a dense C-A-S-H gel, increasing compressive strength approximately eightfold, from 11.64 MPa to 92 MPa. However, perlite’s porous and brittle structure limits its flexural strength to 0.27 MPa; this value is insufficient for structural applications. Under severe sulfate attack (10% Na2SO4), samples cured at ambient temperature showed a 12% mass increase in the first cycle due to solution infiltration into capillary voids. As a consequence of extensive ettringite and gypsum formation, the specimens experienced severe deterioration, resulting in a complete loss of mechanical integrity and a residual compressive strength of 0 MPa. In contrast, heat-treated samples showed limited ion diffusion due to a denser matrix and an improved aggregate interface transition zone, resulting in a 2.6% mass increase and a residual compressive strength of 5.17 MPa. Consequently, the obtained findings indicate that thermally treated alkali-activated slag–perlite composites exhibit high resistance against sodium sulfate attack and may have potential for use in specific industrial environments with high sulfate concentrations. However, the performance of these materials under more complex aggressive conditions, such as mining environments involving magnesium sulfate exposure and acidic drainage waters, should be further validated through future studies.

Assessment of Hazards and Risks in a Marble Quarry

    Demir Şahin, Demet; Eker, Hasan

Potential hazards and risks in marble quarries in Türkiye occur as a result of various factors. These include violations of occupational safety standards, equipment failures, changes in geological structure, lack of worker training and environmental impacts. However; occupational accidents occurring in industrial environments such as marble quarries can be due to various reasons. These may include factors such as falls, equipment failures, rock falls, chemical exposures and fatigue. The L matrix risk assessment method is a management tool used in many areas of industry. This method enables prioritisation of risks by evaluating the probability and impact of the risk on a matrix. The L matrix risk assessment method determines the probability and impact of each of these factors and visualises them on a matrix. The probability and impact values are ranked from low to high and the risk level is calculated by multiplying these values. This method can be an effective tool for identifying, prioritising and managing hazards and risks in marble quarries. However, for a complete and comprehensive assessment, it is important that enterprises cooperate with experts and act in accordance with local regulations. This study analyzed the hazards and risks in a marble quarry in Türkiye with the L-type risk assessment method. The results obtained show that intolerable risks such as tipping over of heavy machinery, falling rocks and breaking off large pieces in marble quarry drilling and open pit mining areas can have fatal consequences. Other significant risks in the open pit area include elements such as machinery and equipment impact, falling parts and dust. In addition, hygiene issues were considered a significant risk in open pit and general operating areas. On the other hand, breakdowns and traffic accidents are classified in the tolerable and mild risk group. This evaluation forms an important basis for taking the necessary measures to increase occupational safety. In this context, hazards and risks in a marble quarry in Türkiye were identified and risk assessment was carried out using the L-type risk assessment method.

Evaluation of Cherts in Gumushane Province in Terms of Alkali Silica Reaction

    Demir Şahin, Demet

Alkali–silica reaction (ASR) occurs when alkali oxides coming from the cement composition in concrete come together with reactive silica and moisture coming from the aggregate. Additional maintenance and repair costs caused by the development of ASR in concrete cause the cost to increase. However, thanks to the measures taken against ASR in the early period, it contributes to the creation of sustainable and durable concrete structures. The article investigated the usability of cherts with eight different chemical compositions as aggregates in ready-mixed concrete plants in Gümüşhane. Cherts have been investigated for alkaline reactivity and are intended to be used largely as a source for concrete plants. ASR length changes of the samples prepared according to ASTM C1260 standard were determined after 3, 7, 14, and 28 days of the curing period. Microstructural examination, ultrasonic P-wave velocity, and bending and compressive strength experiments supporting ASR were carried out. The obtained test results were compared between the reference (limestone) sample and each other, as well as with the values specified in the standards. The compressive and bending strength values of the samples increase depending on their ASR. It was observed that the crack structures and types increased depending on the increase in the crack values.

Effects of Ultrafine Fly Ash against Sulphate Reaction in Concrete Structures

    Demir Şahin, Demet; Eker, Hasan

In this study, Afşin Elbistan C-type fly ash (FA) was used, which protects against the sulphate reaction that damages concrete. The detrimental effects of post-reaction decrease with increasing fly ash fineness. The study used 10%, 30%, and 50% weight substitutes of cement. The fly ash was ground in a ball mill for 0, 10, 20, 30, 45, and 60 min, and Blaine fineness values of 1555, 1632, 2347, 2589, 2766, and 3433 cm2/g were obtained, respectively. The effect of the samples on the sulphate resistance was investigated by exposing the samples to 5% or 10% added sulphate solutions, and the compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity of the concrete were tested. The compressive strength values obtained decreased with the increase in sulphate content, and the increase in the grinding time and the amount of substituted FA increased the compressive strength values. It was observed that weight loss increased with increasing sulphate content and decreased with the addition of FA with a high Blaine fineness. It was determined that as the Blaine fineness value increased, the sulphate content, FA substitution amount, and ultrasonic pulse speed decreased. This study was carried out to determine the effects of fly ash used at different fineness and replacement ratios on the performance and strength of concrete after exposure to external influences such as sulphate. The use of fly ash instead of cement will reduce the use of waste materials and natural resources and prevent environmental pollution. The cost of cement and concrete will be reduced.

Evaluation of Pozzolanic Activity of Two Different Types of C and F Fly Ashes with Fineness Factor

Sahin, Demet Demir; Cavusoglu, Ibrahim; Yilmaz, Ali Osman

Today, energy produced from coal is economical compared to other sources but it faces a very serious waste problem. However, these wastes are evaluated by using them as mineral additives in cement, which leads to lower cement costs, saving resources, producing environmentally friendly cement, reducing CO2 gas, and producing high-strength cement. In this work, the pozzolanic properties of different types of fly ash (Afşin Elbistan C type and Çayırhan F type) are investigated. The fly ashes used in the study are first subjected to the milling process (10, 20, 30, 45, and 60 minutes), and then the 28 and 90-day pozzolanic activity index tests of the milled and unmilled ashes are performed. The results obtained show that the 28-day pozzolanic activity value of the ashes subjected to 20-, 30-, 45-, and 60-minute milling times are higher than the value specified in the standard, compared to the unmilled and 10 min milled fly ash. In addition, for all fly ash samples, the 90-day pozzolanic activity index results show that while the pozzolanic activity index value of Çayırhan (ÇYH) fly ash is higher than the standard value, that of Afşin Elbistan (AE) fly ash is lower than standard. The outcomes of the present study show that the mechanical properties of the fly ash are generated by the burning of coal increase after milling process, and thus can be used as a mineral additive. With the effect of grinding, both fly ash increase the pozzolanic activity. The results are determined with the experimental results obtained.

Effect of Reduced Fineness of Fly Ash Used on the Alkali–Silica Reaction (ASR) of Concrete

Eker, Hasan; Demir Şahin, Demet; Çullu, Mustafa

This study aimed to determine the effect of fly ash added to concrete with high calcium content (C class) and different fineness on durability properties such as the alkali–silica reaction (ASR). By substituting ultra-fine fly ash for cement at specific proportions in concrete mixes and increasing the fly ash fineness, fly ash filled the spaces between cement grains or aggregates in concrete and accelerated the hydration process. Thus, the mechanism of ASR development was reduced. Class C Afşin Elbistan ash was used and was ground in a ball mill for 0, 10, 20, 30, and 45 min, and Blaine fineness values of 1555, 1632, 2347, 2589, and 2766 cm2/g were obtained, respectively. For each fly ash fineness, the effect of mixtures with 10%, 30%, and 50% replacement of cement on the ASR mechanism was observed during curing periods of 3, 7, 14, and 28 days compared to concrete without fly ash admixture. Furthermore, the effect of the increased fineness and substitution rate of fly ash with high calcium content in cement on the microstructure was revealed by microscopic mineralogical images. The prepared fine fly ash added to concrete mixes at different replacement ratios showed ASR reducing properties compared to the concrete mix without additions. The fly ash fineness and the substitution rate in the concrete had a reducing effect on the ASR, and this effect resulted in values lower than the reference concrete value.
