Doğan, Onur
This study aims to explore the impact of substance addiction on employees’ job performance and workplace safety through a phenomenological lens. The research focuses on how individuals with substance use disorders perceive their professional experiences, emotional states, and social interactions within the work environment. The study was designed using a qualitative phenomenological method. Semi-structured in depth interviews were conducted with 15 mining employees selected via criterion sampling. The participants, all of whom had a history of substance use, were interviewed across different regions in Turkey. Audio recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed through thematic analysis. The study adhered to ethical standards and was reported according to the COREQ checklist. Three main themes and related subthemes emerged from the analysis: (1) The impact of substance use on job performance and safety attitudes; (2) Alienation and loss of professional identity in the workplace; and (3) Inner emotional challenges and individual coping strategies. Participants described cognitive difficulties, emotional exhaustion, increased workplace errors, weakened safety compliance, social isolation, and loss of belonging. Some individuals also reported efforts to recover and reestablish self control through personal strategies and peer support. The findings reveal that substance use significantly disrupts professional functionality, emotional stability, and organizational connectedness. The study emphasizes the need for empathy driven, context sensitive support strategies to improve employee well being and workplace safety. By bringing forward the lived experiences of affected workers, this research contributes valuable insights for developing preventive approaches and reinforcing safety culture within occupational settings.

Methods: In this phenomenological study, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 Parkinson’s patients who applied to the neurology outpatient clinic of a state hospital in a province in southern Turkey. Criterion sampling method, one of the purposive sampling methods, was used to reach the sample group. Interviews continued until data saturation was achieved. All interviews were recorded on a voice recorder after obtaining the necessary permissions from the patients and then transcribed. The data of the study were evaluated using thematic analysis. The study was conducted and reported according to the COREQ checklist. Results: Data analysis revealed three main themes (metaphors for Parkinson's disease, effects of Parkinson's disease, symptom management and psychosocial needs in Parkinson's disease) and eight sub-themes (metaphors for physical effects, metaphors for mental effects, metaphors for social effects, mental, physical, social, symptom management and psychosocial needs). Conclusions: As a result of this study, it was determined that Parkinson's disease negatively affects patients psychosocially and they have difficulty in coping. It is recommended to implement research and application centers for Parkinson's patients with a focus on psychosocial support and to carry out awareness and awareness-raising studies on Parkinson's disease. Studies on this subject are very limited and it is recommended that large-scale studies on psychosocial problems in individuals with Parkinson's disease be conducted in the future.

This phenomenological study, which is in the qualitative research design, was conducted with 14 operating room nurses. Prior to the study, a pilot study was conducted with three nurse families. The interviews were conducted using a face-to-face in-depth semi-structured interview form and the data were analyzed with Colaizzi’s phenomenological method. Interview data were collected between 15 June 2022 and 15 October 2022 in the country. Three categories, seven main themes, and twenty-three sub-themes emerged as a result of the interviews. In the theme of ethical dilemmas experienced by operating room nurses, there are sub-themes of professional ethics, teamwork, and patient dignity and benefit. There are physical and psychological sub-themes in the theme of ethical sensitivity perception and practices of operating room nurses, and among the subthemes, ensuring patient privacy, providing professional competence, providing psychological support to the patient, being friendly and communicating effectively, and respecting the patient’s autonomy come to the fore. Views of operating room nurses on the importance of ethical principles were discussed under the headings of profession and patient. Our results are valuable in that they shed light on the perspectives and experiences of the operating room nurses while maintaining ethical sensitivity. The high ethical sensitivity perceptions of operating room nurses are associated with an increase in the quality of care. It is thought that the high perception of ethical sensitivity of operating room nurses is an important factor that increases the satisfaction of individuals receiving care and the job satisfaction and quality of care of nurses.

Aktaş, Eda; Ustuner Top, Fadime; Uzun, Sevda
The study aimed to explore mothers’ experiences of children with autism using a phenomenological approach. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 parents with children attending a special education centre in a northern province of Turkey. Criterion sampling, a form of purposive sampling, was employed to select participants. Interviews continued until data saturation was achieved. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was utilized to analyze the data, and the study adhered to the COREQ checklist for reporting qualitative research. As a result of analyses, three main themes (the process of diagnosis, the effect of the child’s illness on parents and their challenges over time, and considerations regarding the child’s educational journey) and eight sub-themes (feelings and thoughts, reflections on the causes, reactions encountered, emotional effects, social effects, physical effects, perception of social support, and expectations from the educator and the education process) emerged. The study concluded that mothers of children with autism are emotionally, physically, and socially impacted by their child’s condition, facing considerable challenges in coping. In light of these findings, it is recommended that policymakers in our country develop plans that address the difficulties expressed by participants, review and potentially enhance financial and social support for families, and consider increasing special education hours.

Uzun, Sevda; Ustuner Top, Fadime
The concept of immigration is a complex phenomenon that goes far beyond mere relocation and refers to the transition from one social environment to another or from one culture to another. Immigration and its effects on children are regarded as global and interdisciplinary problems. This study aims to reveal the opinions of nurses working in the pediatric emergency department about the mental health of immigrant children. In this qualitative research, a phenomenological research design was used (N = 19).Interviews were conducted using a semi-structured interview form. Colaizzi’s method was used to analyze the data manually. Four categories, eleven themes, and thirty-eight sub-themes emerged from the analysis of the data. The difficulties nurses experience with immigrant children and their relatives in providing care include communication problems, cultural problems, and economic problems. The causes of mental health problems in immigrant children include war, exposure to immigration traumas, cultural assimilation problems, loss/absence of parents, economic reasons/excessive role overload, and exposure to neglect and/or abuse. Education, economic aid, communication, non-stigmatization, and social support were identified as significant sub-themes for practices to protect/promote children’s mental health. The study showed that immigrant children experience physical and mental problems. Nurses struggle to treat immigrant children effectively but have difficulties due to insufficient facilities. It may be suggested to include cultural care models in patient care.

Saeighi Mameghani, Shiva; Yilmaz, Müge; Balcı Çelik, Seher; Karimi, Kambiz
Right now, more than ever in our lives, we need to remain optimistic. The present study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of The Optimism Scale, developed by Balcı & Yılmaz (2002), among Iranian university students and to adapt to Iranian culture. The scale is a single-factor scale with 24 items. The participants were selected using an appropriate sampling method, and the sample consisted of 600 Iranian university students (360 females and 240 males) from Tehran and Tabriz cities. Participants’ age ranged from 18 to 24 years (M = 21.58, SD = 1.75). The study findings suggested similarities between Iran and Turkey culture (e.g., religion, language, neighborhood relations). The optimism scale revealed a good construct validity in the Goodness of fit index indicators. The Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficient for the scale was 0.76 and Convergent validity with happiness was 0.38. In future studies, the scale’s factor structure can be investigated in different samples, such as adolescents and adults.
