INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECT OF INSTRUMENT-ASSISTED SOFT TISSUE MOBILIZATION IN INDIVIDUALS WITH LUMBAR DISC HERNIATION: A RANDOMIZED CLINICAL TRIAL

    Tas, Muhammed Usame; Usgu, Gunseli

Purpose: This research evaluated the effects of the instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) technique in individuals with lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Methods: Forty LDH patients were randomly assigned to a control group or an IASTM group (20 patients in each group). The IASTM group underwent a treatment protocol consisting of two IASTM sessions per week in addition to classic physiotherapy methods (hotpack, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, ultrasound and exercise) over a four week period. The treatment specifically targeted the paraspinal muscles, gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and hamstring muscles. All participants were assessed before treatment, immediately after treatment and two months post-treatment using various measures, including pain intensity visual analog scale, straight leg raise (SLR) test, slump test (measuring knee extension from 90 degrees flexion), 6-minute walking test (6-MWT), range of motion (ROM) and the Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire. Results: Both groups experienced a significant decrease in pain immediately after treatment (p=0.002). However, although both groups showed improvements in post-treatment SLR, slump test, 6-MWT, ROM, and SF-36 scores, no significant correlations were found (p=0.208). However, the IASTM group experienced greaterclinical improvement across all parameters. Conclusion: The findings suggest that incorporating IASTM techniques into physiotherapy programs for individuals with LDH can enhance rehabilitation outcomes.

Attitudes Toward Artificial Intelligence Among Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

Candiri, Büşra; Yılmaz, Ramazan Cihad; Perçin, Alper; Karaoba, Dilan Demirtaş

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the attitudes of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation students towards Artificial Intelligence (AI) and to compare the attitudes towards AI according to sociodemographic variable. Methods: 212 students participated in this study. Participants’demographic data were recorded using a sociodemographic data form. Students’ attitudes toward AI were surveyed with the General Attitudes toward Artificial Intelligence Scale (GAAIS). This study was designed as a cross-sectional study. Results: Positive attitude scores differed significantly according to daily internet use duration (Kruskal–Wallis H = 17.934, p = 0.001), with higher scores observed among students using the internet more than four hours per day (47.04 ± 7.83). Negative attitude scores differed significantly by accommodation type (ANOVA F = 2.26, p = 0.003) and source of scholarship income (Kruskal–Wallis H = 2.772, p = 0.028). No significant differences were found according to age, gender, class level, type of high school graduated, perceived income status, and parental education level (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Students had positive attitudes toward AI. Moreover, while students’ attitudes were not affected by sociodemographic variables. However, greater use of the internet and AI was associated with more positive attitudes.

Examination of awareness, knowledge and beliefs on pelvic floor and pelvic floor muscle training in pregnant women

Ankarali, Handan; Özengin, Nuriye; Bakar, Yesim; Topcuoglu, Mehmet Ata; Bahar, Betül

Aim: This study aimed to determine the awareness, knowledge, and beliefs of pregnant women on pelvic floor and pelvic floor muscle training. Methods: A total of 250 volunteer women with gestational weeks ranging between 5 to 40 weeks were included in this study. After the physical and socio-demographic characteristics of the pregnant women were recorded, they were asked to complete the questionnaire assessing their awareness, knowledge and beliefs on pelvic floor and pelvic floor muscle training. Results: It was determined that 70.4% of the pregnant women had not heard of the pelvic floor muscles before, 95.2% did not get information about pelvic floor muscles, 90.8% did not know why they needed pelvic floor muscles. It was found that 47.6% of the pregnant women believed that urinary incontinence during pregnancy was normal. In addition, 98% of the pregnant women did not think that they had sufficient information about pelvic floor muscles. It was found that knowledge, awareness and beliefs about pelvic floor and pelvic floor muscles were similar between gestational trimesters (p> 0.05). Conclusion: As a result, pregnant women had insufficient awareness and knowledge levels, maladaptive beliefs about pelvic floor muscles and training. It is essential for pregnant women to know potential problems, preventive and therapeutic methods in this process which they are at risk for various pelvic floor dysfunctions. Therefore, it can be recommended that pregnant women should be routinely informed about the pelvic floor by health professionals and encouraged to participate in pelvic floor muscle training.

Evaluation of Lower Extremity Muscles Shortness, Flexibility, and Hypermobility in Adults with Asymptomatic Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction

Narin, Ayşe Neriman; Yazgan Dağli, Beyza; Vural Cömert, Aysun; Bahar, Betül; Özturan, Kutay Engin

Objective: (a) To investigate the presence of sacroiliac joint dysfunction in asymptomatic individuals and (b) to compare lower limb muscle shortness, flexibility of hamstring and erector spinae muscles, and hypermobility between subjects with and without asymptomatic sacroiliac joint dysfunction. Material and Methods: A total of 54 healthy young adults subjects were included in the study. The subjects were assessed with the sacroiliac joint diagnostic procedure. The seated flexion test, the standing flexion test, the Gillet test, and bilateral bony landmark examination were performed by an expert investigator. According to the positivity of at least 3 of these tests, the subjects were divided into 2 groups, the asymptomatic sacroiliac joint dysfunction group and the control group. The shortness of tensor fasciae latae and iliopsoas muscles was evaluated with the modified Ober test and the modified Thomas test. The straight leg raise test and fingertip-to-floor test were carried out for hamstring and erector spinae muscles flexibility, while hypermobility was assessed according to the Beighton criteria. Results: The asymptomatic sacroiliac joint dysfunction was diagnosed in 38% of healthy adults. There was no statistical difference in the shortness of tensor fasciae latae and iliopsoas muscles between the asymptomatic sacroiliac joint dysfunction group and the control group (P > 0.05). Similarly, there was no difference between the groups in terms of the hamstring and erector spinae muscles flexibility, and the Beighton scores (P > 0.05). Conclusion: This study emphasized that asymptomatic sacroiliac joint dysfunction might be seen in healthy young adults without the difference in shortness and flexibility in the lower extremity and hypermobility.
