- MakaleYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ2Hidden Diversity in a Narrow Valley: Description of New Endemic Palearctic Rock Lizard Darevskia (Squamata: Lacertidae) Species from Northeastern Turkey
Kurnaz, Muammer; Şahin, Mehmet Kürşat; Eroğlu, Ali İhsan
Darevskia is a particularly species-rich radiation of Palearctic rock lizards from the Caucasus region. Thanks to intense systematic and taxonomic research, the knowledge of species-level diversity within this genus has increased over the last quarter century. Here, we described a new species, Darevskia salihae sp. nov. from northeastern Turkey. The new taxon is differentiated from other nearby taxon by the low number of dorsal scales in the middle of the body, the shorter body length, and the absence of blue dots both on the lateral region above the forelimbs and on the margin of the ventral plates. In addition to their morphological differences, the new taxon is phylogenetically different from close groups. It is located in a separate subclade from the rudis-valentini-portschinskii subclade. This distinction is supported by both a high bootstrap value (100) and a high posterior probability value (1.00). These two subclades are separated from each other by a genetic distance of almost 4%. This separation is supported not only genetically and morphologically, but also geographically. Since the habitat of the new taxon is limited to a high mountain and a narrow valley, it does not provide an opportunity for a different Darevskia species to shelter because it creates geographical isolation. However, Darevskia parvula that live closest to the habitat of the new taxon live only at the habitat boundaries and do not enter areas where the new taxon is found. Therefore, it might be possible that while it was separated from the rudis-valentini-portschinskii group during the evolutionary transformation, it remained as a refuge and relict in a narrow area as a result of the collapse of the valleys and the partial uplift of the Kaçkar Mountains.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ3In situ gamma ray measurements for deciphering of radioactivity level in Sarıhan pluton area of northeastern Turkey
Çınar, Hakan; Altundaş, Suna; Çelik, Necati; Maden, Nafız
The present work utilizes in situ gamma ray spectrometric measurement data to map the surface geology of Sarıhan Granitoid and its surrounding area. The study area comprises three different lithological units, namely, Hozbirikyayla Formation (limestone and sandy limestones), Sarıhan Granitoid (consist of quartz monzodiorite, granodiorite and quartz diorite) and the Ophiolitic olistostromal melange (andesite, basalt, sandstone, gravelly sandstone). When lithological units are assessed according to the radioactivity characteristics, natural radionuclide contents (40K and radionuclides from 238U and 232Th series) of Hozbirikyayla limestones and ophiolitic melange rocks are lower than the Sarıhan pluton. The U, Th and K radionuclide contents were found to be 0.8–5.4 ppm, 10.1–33.6 ppm and 1.29–4.41% in the Sarıhan plutonic area and 0.9–5.3 ppm, 1.1–20.3 ppm and 0.04–2.71% in Horzbirikyayla formation, respectively. The element concentrations of 238U, 232Th and 40K of the Ophiolitic melange are 1.1–4.5 ppm, 1.6–25.3 ppm and 0.09–3.63%, respectively. Radioelement ratio maps are created for the studied area, because the parameters of radioelement ratios, eU/eTh, eU/K and eTh/K, reflect the radioactive characters of the rock and soil. The Hozbirikyayla Formation is characterized by the highest value of eU/eTh and lowest value of eTh/K. While the lowest eU/eTh and eU/K ratios were observed in the Sarıhan Granodiorite, the highest value of eU/K and eTh/K were obtained in the Ophiolitic olistostromal melange. By comparing these maps with the geology, it was found that the radioelement concentrations are in good agreement with the geological properties of the region. In addition to this, the radiation hazard parameters were evaluated to assess the radiation hazard for people living in this area. It has also been found that there is no significant radiologic hazard for humans and the environment in and around studied area.

Ashyralyyev, Charyyar
In the present paper, identification elliptic problem in a Hilbert space with Dirichlet and integral boundary conditions is discussed. Identification problem is reduced to auxiliary nonlocal boundary value problem with nonlocal integral condition. Operator approach is used to prove stability and coercive stability inequalities for solution of source identification elliptic problem in the case of a self-adjoint positive definite operator in a differential equation. As applications, four mixed boundary value problems for strongly elliptic multidimensional partial differential equation are investigated. Theorems on stability of solutions of these boundary value problems are established.

AZERİ, F.N.; Öztürk, G.
The plant Lilium monadelphum M. Bieb. var. armenum (Mıscz. Ex Grossh) Davis et Henderson recognized as the caucasian lily grows in the Eastern Black Sea Region and is a perennial bulbous species belonging to the Liliaceae family. Its flowers, bulbs, and volatile oils are used in the perfume industry, as a folk medicine to treat eczema and abscess therapy, and as a tranquilizer among regional people respectively. Hence, it is commonly collected from the wild and could become endangered. In this study, we explored the optimal hormone treatment for efficient and rapid induction and production of this species in tissue culture. Explants taken from bulbs were cultured in Murashige and Skoog medium (MS medium, 1962) and modified with TDZ (thidiazuran) (0.5; 1.0; 2.0; 3.0; 5.0 mg/L), after which adventitious buds used for explants during the second stage were subcultured 4 different media supplemented with different concentrations of PAC (paclobutrazol) (0.1; 0.5; 1.0; 2.0 mg/L) to induce microbulbs formation. Microbulbs were cultured in a rooting medium containing IBA (0.5;1.0 mg/L). The highest bud regeneration was observed in medium containing 3.0 mg/L TDZ, 0.25 mg/L NAA and 0.1 mg/L GA3; the highest microbulb formation was observed in medium containing 2.0 mg/L PAC, 0.2 mg/L NAA, and 0.1 mg/L GA3. Besides, plant development from the microbulb was successful for roots in a medium containing 0.5 mg/I IBA and all of the plantlets obtained in tissue culture survived when transferred to the soil.

- MakaleYalnız künye2019Scopus SJRQ2Detecting interaction/complexity within crowd movements using braid entropy
Akpulat, Murat; Ekinci, Murat
The segmentation of moving and non-moving regions in an image within the field of crowd analysis is a crucial process in terms of understanding crowd behavior. In many studies, similar movements were segmented according to the location, adjacency to each other, direction, and average speed. However, these segments may not in turn indicate the same types of behavior in each region. The purpose of this study is to better understand crowd behavior by locally measuring the degree of interaction/complexity within the segment. For this purpose, the flow of motion in the image is primarily represented as a series of trajectories. The image is divided into hexagonal cells and the finite time braid entropy (FTBE) values are calculated according to the different projection angles of each cell. These values depend on the complexity of the spiral structure that the trajectories generated throughout the movement and show the degree of interaction among pedestrians. In this study, behaviors of different complexities determined in segments are pictured as similar movements on the whole. This study has been tested on 49 different video sequences from the UCF and CUHK databases.

- MakaleYalnız künye2018Scopus SJRQ3Solving power transmission line routing problem using improved genetic and artificial bee colony algorithms
Eroğlu, Hasan; Aydin, Musa
In engineering studies, finding the best route from a start point to an end point on pixel-based weighted maps is a big problem for researchers. For this problem many methods and algorithms have been developed until now. The “cost distance” (CD) and “cost path” (CP) tools that are used by a modified Dijkstra’s algorithm and used by Environmental Systems Research Institute’s (ESRI) ArcGIS Desktop 10 software are very fast and most preferred solutions for route optimization problems. Despite the advantages of these tools, they have the disadvantage of making a lot of curves with big angles. Especially in some engineering studies like power transmission lines’ routing, the angle of the curves of the lines should not have big values. For overcoming this problem both genetic algorithm (GA) and artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm that have been improved and adapted for the problem were used as powerful optimizers to find the best routes with fewer curves in those kinds of optimum route problems. New functions like smart direction sensing and improved random functions were developed for application of GA and ABC algorithms in power transmission lines routing studies. This study showed that the ABC algorithm’s performance is better than GA. The accuracy of the algorithms was proven by comparing the results with the CD–CP tools’ results. The experimental results showed that the improved algorithms gave better performance than Dijkstra’s algorithm.

- MakaleYalnız künye2018Scopus SJRQ4Optimization of drying parameters for chestnut fruits using central composite design
Koca, I.; Yilmaz, V.A.; Odabas, I.H.; Tekguler, B.
The chestnut drying process was optimized by Response Surface Methodology (RSM). A central composite design with two numerical factors was selected for modelling the drying process. The numerical factors were air temperature from 40 to 60°C and air velocity from 0.75 to 1.75 m s-1. The investigated responses were color values, including lightness (L*), redness (a*), yellowness (b*), total color changes (ΔE) and browning index (BI). The study revealed that the drying temperature was significantly effective on lightness, redness, total color changes and browning index. However, none of the independent variables were significant on yellowness. The L*, a*, ΔE and BI of chestnuts during drying process were adequately described by RSM models. According to desirability function, the optimum drying conditions of chestnuts were 40°C and 0.75 m s-1 air. At optimum conditions, predicted L*, a*, ΔE and BI values were 76.34, -0.20, 7.45 and 17.00, respectively. Under optimized conditions the experimental values of L* (77.46), a* (-0.36), ΔE (6.31) and BI (16.88) agreed with the predicted values. RSM was not successful to develop a satisfactory model for b* values of chestnuts during drying process.

Cress (Lepidium sativum) is an annual herb from Brassicaceae family, and in some regions. It is known as peppergrass, garden cress, garden pepper-cress, pepperwort, or poor man’s pepper. Cress is an important medicinal plant in some countries including Turkey. This plant has major scientific and therapeutic significance. Peroxidase (POD, E.C.1.11.1.7) is an oxidor-eductase enzyme produced by a number of organisms. In this study, POD enzyme was purified from cress by ammonium sulphate precipitation, gel filtration, and CM-Sephadex ion-exchange chromatographies. K m and V max values were calculated from the Lineweaver-Burk graph for H 2 O 2 and guaiacol substrates and the substrate specificity of POD was investigated. The results showed that substrate specificity of H 2 O 2 is better than substrate specificity of guaiacol for this enzyme. The inhibition effects of three cations (Al 3+ , Cu 2+ , and Cr 3+ ) and one organic compound of cetyl trimethylammonium bromide were performed and their inhibition types were determined. Finally, optimum pH, optimum temperature, optimum ionic strength, and stable pH were determined.

Cynarin is a derivative of hydroxycinnamic acid and it has biologically active functional groups constituent of some plants and food. We elucidated the antioxidant activity of cynarin by using different in vitro condition bioanalytical antioxidant assays like DMPD•+, ABTS•+, DPPH• and H2O2 scavenging effects, the total antioxidant influence, reducing capabilities, Fe2+ chelating and anticholinergic activities. Cynarin demonstrated 87.72% inhibition of linoleic acid lipid peroxidation at 30 g/mL concentration. Conversely, some standard antioxidants like trolox, tocopherol, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) exhibited inhibitions of 90.32, 75.26, 97.61, 87.30%, and opponent peroxidation of linoleic acid emulsion at the identical concentration, seriatim. Also, cynarin exhibited effective DMPD•+, ABTS•+, DPPH•, and H2O2 scavenging effects, reducing capabilities and Fe2+ chelating effects. On the contrary, IC50 and Ki parameters of cynarin for acetylcholinesterase enzyme inhibition were determined as 243.67 nM (r2: 0.9444) and 39.34 ± 13.88 nM, respectively. This study clearly showed that cynarin had marked antioxidant, anticholinergic, reducing ability, radical-scavenging, and metal-binding activities.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2019Scopus SJRQ2Preliminary investigations on two different procedures to calculate the efficiency and performance ratio of PV modules
Ozden, T.; Akinoglu, B.G.
Short- and long-term outdoor performances of the photovoltaic (PV) modules are extremely important in reaching their economic viabilities. Such information is very valuable for the investors, customers and researchers of PV technologies. Two different procedures are possible, and both are used by many researchers. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no comparative investigation to evaluate these two procedures. One of the methods uses instantaneous I–V curves of PV modules taken in a specified instant of time, while the others simply use the integrated energy values of the input and the yield of PV modules. In fact, both have advantages and disadvantages. In the present work, we outlined the advantages and disadvantages of both methods and compared them using the data of two different cell-type modules which are installed at GÜNAM’s outdoor test facility. In the analysis, the data that we used are taken under the same outdoor test conditions and ambient weather conditions. The outcomes of these preliminary analyses can be summarized as follows: (1) The procedure that uses instantaneous I–V curves seems dependent on the specified time intervals and ambient weather conditions at that instant; (2) accordingly, we will propose how to determine an optimal time interval to reach better performance results; (3) using the integrated values, we achieved the variations in performances with different integration time periods; (4) preliminary comparisons of these two procedures resulted in key conclusions on performance and degradation calculations of PV modules.

Ormeni, Rrapo; öZtürk, Serkan; Fundo, Akli; çElik, Kemal
Spatial and temporal evaluation of current seismic activity throughout the Vlora- Lushnja-Elbasani-Dibra (VLED) transversal fault zone were carried out at the beginning of year 2016. The seismotectonic b-value, fractal dimension Dc-value and precursory seismic quiescence Z-value are considered for a detailed statistical analysis. Completeness magnitude Mc-value varies from 2.5 to 2.7 for different parts of the VLED fault zone. The b-value is calculated as 1.10±0.04 for the south western part and 1.13±0.05 for the middle part, whereas it is estimated as 0.94±0.07 for the north eastern part of the study region. These results reveal that b-values for all regions are well represented by a b-value typically close to 1.0. There are clear decreasing trends in temporal changes of b-values before the occurrences of some strong main shocks. On the contrary, no earthquakes are observed in some periods after decrease of b-value. Dc-values are computed as 2.66±0.04 for the south western part, 2.64±0.03 for the middle part and 2.15±0.02 for the north eastern part of the VLED fault zone. These rather large values show that earthquake activity is more clustered at larger scales or in smaller areas in the study area. Considering the phenomenon of seismic quiescence as a precursor of the main earthquakes gives successful outcomes in defining the potential anomalies and possible locations of future earthquakes. Quiescence analysis of current seismicity at the beginning of 2016 in the VLED fault zone is performed with the test of standard normal deviate Z-value. Distributions of resulting Z-values show six anomalous regions along the different parts of the VLED fault zone. These quiescence areas are detected at (i) 40.81°N- 19.86°E (including Kuc-Bubullim, southeast of Lushnja town), (ii) 41.00°N-20.01°E (in the Cerriku, south of Elbasani town), (iii) 41.31°N-20.13°E (around Bene-Qafe, northeast of Elbasani town), (iv) 41.43°N-20.21°E (Krasta-Batra, south of Bulqiza town), (v) 41.28°N-20.49°E (including Carrishta-Stebleve, northeast of Librazhdi town), (vi) 41.51°N-20.51°E (including Qerrenec-Gjorica, west of Dibra town). As an important result, analyses of spatial and temporal characteristics of the earthquake activity may supply significant clues for revealing the future seismic hazard along the VLED fault zone, and these anomaly regions may be interpreted as the locations of next possible earthquakes.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death and gastric cancer is the fourth most common cancer type worldwide. Investigation of autoantibodies in cancer patients has been a popular research area in recent years. The aim of the current study was to investigate carbonic anhydrase I and II (CA I and II) autoantibodies in the plasma of subjects with gastric cancer based on the information and considerations of autoimmune relation of gastric cancer. Anti-CA I and II antibody levels were investigated by ELISA in plasma samples of fifty two patients with gastric cancer and thirty five healthy peers. Anti-CA I and II antibody titers of the gastric cancer group were significantly higher compared with the control group (p = 0.004, p = 0.0001, respectively). Plasma anti-CA I levels of the metastatic group were lower than the non-metastatic group and this difference was found statistically significant (p < 0.05), but there was no statistical difference between plasma anti-CA II levels of the groups. CA I and II autoantibody titers in patients with gastric cancer were found higher compared to healthy subjects and the results suggest that these autoantibodies may be involved in the pathogenesis of gastric cancer.

Bayram, Bulent; Ozkan, Taskin; Reis, Hatice Catal; Bakirman, Tolga; Cetin, Ibrahim; Seker, Dursun Zafer
Three dimensional (3D) face and body modeling is widely used in various fields such as plastic surgery, diagnosis of facial or body anomalies, 3D computer games and 3D simulation software. Since, commercial 3D face and body scanners are usually expensive, an alternative solution with lower cost is highly desirable. The objective of this study is to create 3D facial point cloud using Semi Global Image Matching method with minimum number of images utilizing a cost effective method. A non-metric Canon 600D camera with 18 megapixels resolution (3456 × 5184) and 60 mm macro lens have been used for face imaging that have been taken from a distance of 120 cm. Five faces have been modeled by the developed algorithm and scanned by David SLS-2 structured light system for accuracy assessment. Open source Cloud Compare software has been used for comparing the results of proposed method with the structured light system. The mean accuracy of five faces obtained as 90.5%. It has been observed that illumination conditions, uncontrolled movements of face or body, hair and eyebrow have negative impacts on the obtained results. The sufficiency of Semi global image matching method has been tested to create dense point cloud data from three stereo pairs for 3D facial modelling.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ2How does corporate social responsibility create customer loyalty? the role of corporate image
Gürlek, Mert; Düzgün, Ertugrul; Uygur, Selma Meydan
Purpose - This paper aims to investigate whether corporate image has a mediating effect on the influence of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on customer loyalty in independent hotels. Design/methodology/approach - Data were collected from customers of five-star hotels located in Istanbul in Turkey. The theoretical model was tested with 404 usable data. The results were analyzed by using structural equation modeling (SEM). Findings - Findings show that CSR creates customer loyalty partially through corporate image in the independent hotels. In addition, it was found that the hotels included in the study carried out moderate level of CSR activities. Research limitations/implications - The research model was tested in independent five-star hotels. Further studies could be carried out using different independent hospitality companies. In addition, the research was conducted on a limited sample, as hotel managers were not willing to allow direct contact with customers. Further studies could be carried out on larger samples. Practical implications - This study recommends that independent hotels carry out more CSR activities on social and environmental issues. In addition, direct effect of CSR on customer loyalty is lower than its indirect effect via corporate image. Therefore, if companies desire to create customer loyalty through CSR, they should introduce their CSR activities to customers via communication tools (website, media etc.) Originality/value - This study examines CSR in terms of sustainable development in the independent hotels. Furthermore, it explains relationships between CSR and corporate image and customer loyalty through the principle of generalized reciprocity specified in the theory of social change.
