Investigation of mechanical properties of nano-graphene reinforced polymer composites

Karabudak, Filiz; Ateş, Onur Kazım; Zamanlou, Hamid

The demand for lightweight and durable materials in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and chemical engineering has driven research into advanced composite materials. This study investigates the interaction between nano-graphene and polymer matrices, focusing on how varying concentrations of nano-graphene can optimize mechanical properties and potentially revolutionize the design of structural components. Polymer composite materials were produced using glass fiber fabric and an epoxy resin system employing the hand lay-up method. Nano-graphene was incorporated into the matrix at weight percentages of 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1%.Notably, the addition of 1% nano-graphene resulted in a significant tensile strength increase, achieving a maximum value of 186.73 MPa, compared to the control group at 53.71 MPa. This enhancement is attributed to the improved stress transfer mechanisms facilitated by the nano-graphene’s high surface area and exceptional mechanical properties. However, an unexpected decrease in bending strength was observed, with the glass fiber control group composites exhibiting the highest bending strength of 404.75 MPa. This trend suggests that while nano-graphene enhances tensile properties, it may introduce interfacial weaknesses or disrupt fiber alignment in bending scenarios. These findings reveal the complex nature of nano-graphene reinforcement, emphasizing the need for tailored formulations to balance tensile and bending performance. Further investigation into the interfacial bonding and distribution of nano-graphene within the polymer matrix is warranted to develop optimized composite materials for structural applications.

Investigation of Radiation Shielding Performance in Borosilicate Ceramic Glass Samples

    Kaya, Selim

Ceramic glass is a multipurpose solid-state material that merges the high thermal stability, mechanical strength, and chemical durability of ceramics with the transparency, light transmission, and aesthetic benefits of glass. Because of these qualities, ceramic glass can be used in both industrial and scientific settings, especially when radiation protection, high-temperature endurance, heat resistance to thermal fluctuations, and optical clarity are required. Radiation shielding properties of five distinct ceramic glass samples with the chemical formula B2O3-ZnO-K2CO3-PbO (abbreviated as BZKP) were comprehensively assessed in this study. The radiation protection parameters of B2O3-ZnO-K2CO3-PbO glass-ceramic systems, including gamma-ray kerma coefficients (kγ), half-value layer (HVL), radiation shielding efficiency (RPE), mean free path (MFP), fast neutron macroscopic cross section ΣR (cm−1), and effective atomic number (Zeff), were theoretically examined using Monte Carlo EGS4 and WinXCOM software. The radiation shielding characteristics at 20 discrete photon energies, ranging from 0.05 MeV to 2 MeV, were theoretically calculated using the EGS4 simulation code and subsequently compared with data obtained from the XCOM program. The results of this study provide solid and valuable information regarding the improved design of high-performance ceramic glasses for radiation shielding applications. To create effective shielding solutions, a comprehensive understanding of the interactions between various materials and ionizing radiation, such as neutrons and gamma rays, is essential. By combining these discoveries, scientists can create new shielding materials that make the most of materials in these critical areas while improving radiation protection.

Normalized stress relaxation behaviors of SBR, NBR, NR and EPDM synthetic rubber species

    Mazlum, Uğur

Rubber-like materials are used in different application areas considering the developing technology. However, inelastic properties such as stress relaxation, which prevent the mechanical properties of such materials from being fully understood. In addition, the lifetimes of rubber-type materials with different elongation rates can be obtained by normalizing the stress-time data obtained from the stress relaxation test of the material and drawing it on a 0-1 stress scale. In this study, normalized stress relaxation tests were performed using four types of rubber, three hardness values and two different procedures. As a result, although the increase of hardness decreased the tensile value by 9%, it was observed that the increase in tensile values between the procedures was at the maximum of 7.3% i n t he N R r ubber m aterial a nd i n t he p re-procedural state. Therefore, applying preliminary procedures before the experiments increases the lifetimes of the materials to a certain extent depending on the material characteristics.

Experimental Investigation of MR Effect to RTV Silicone Rubber-based Magneto-rheological Materials

    Mazlum, Uğur; Gümrük, Recep

Magneto-rheological Elastomers are smart materials whose properties can be altered reversibly and almost instantaneously by application of external magnetic fields. Silicone rubber species are used widely in the laboratory studies because of it is easy to prepare and cured at room temperature. In this study, MRE material was produced using three different types of silicone rubber and ferromagnetic powder which is sensitive to magnetic field. MRE materials are obtained as isotropic (homogenous) and anisotropy (aligned) state. Composite materials were tested in uniaxial compression testing machine with three different test procedures. In this way, the mechanical properties and the magneto-rheological effect of the materials were compared. As a result, under the magnetic field to 0.430 T with anisotropic Sorta Clear40 materials were found to increase in stress 30%, according to the pure state has been demonstrated that the rate of 50%. When the isotropic Sorta Clear40 and Vario40 materials were comparable, MR effect was revealed that the increases the rate of about 325% at strain to 5%. When selecting to optimum rubber types was reached the result should be used to materials the most appropriate to the material characteristics of engineering aspects.
