Çavdar, Ahmet; Çavdar, Özlem
Turkey has large aggregate deposits; however, these deposits cannot be used effectively due to a lack of controls. This can lead to fatal errors, as in the 6 February 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes. The main motivation of this study is to investigate the availability of existing and new aggregate deposits as concrete aggregates in northeastern Turkey. Thus, the quality of aggregates in this region will be studied comparatively. This research was carried out with aggregate samples taken from 30 different rock quarries in 10 different provinces in this region of Turkey. First, the locations of 30 crushed rock aggregates were identified, and their petrographic, mineralogical, physical, geometric and durability properties were determined. Fifteen different test procedures were applied to 30 crushed rock samples. It was concluded that these rocks are generally sedimentary rock types and that 18 of these 30 samples are of limestone origin. To obtain high-strength concrete, in addition to quality cement, the aggregates used must also be of high quality. The use of aggregate resources mentioned in this study for building concrete will contribute to the production of high-strength concrete. These samples, which generally have sufficient physical, mechanical and durability properties, meet the limitations of the standards much better than concrete aggregates. High-statistical-performance regression equations were obtained for the physical and durability properties.

Karsli, Orhan; Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Kandemir, Raif
Late Carboniferous to early Permian granitoid rocks represent a volumetrically minor component of the Eastern Pontide lithosphere, but they preserve useful information about the region's tectonomagmatic history. The Casurluk and Camlik plutons primarily consist of gabbro, gabbroic diorite, diorite, monzogabbro, monzodiorite and monzonite, which intrude early to middle Carboniferous granitic basement rocks in the region. In this study, we use in situ zircon U–Pb ages and Lu–Hf isotopic values, whole-rock Sr–Nd isotopic values, and mineral chemistry and geochemistry of these plutons to determine petrogenesis and crustal evolution; we also discuss geodynamic implications. LA–ICP-MS zircon U–Pb dating of magmatic zircons from the rocks suggests that the plutons were emplaced during the late Carboniferous to early Permian (302 Ma). The metaluminous and I-type intrusive rocks belong to the high-K calc-alkaline series. In addition, they are relatively enriched in light rare earth elements (LREEs) and large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs); they are depleted in heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) and high field strength elements (HFSEs), such as Nb and Ti. All of the samples have homogeneous initial ISr values (0.70675 to 0.70792) and low εNd (t) values (− 5.1 to − 3.3). Zircons from the rocks of both plutons have uniform negative to slightly positive εHf (t) values (− 3.5 to 1.4) and old Hf two-stage model ages (1323 to 1548 Ma), implying that they have the same source, as well as suggesting the involvement of old enriched lithospheric mantle materials during their magma genesis. These results, combined with the εHf (t) values and two-stage model ages, demonstrate that the primary magmas were derived from partial melting of old lithospheric mantle material metasomatized by subduction-related fluids. Considering other regional geological data from the Sakarya Zone where these plutons formed, we conclude that late Carboniferous to early Permian magmatism in the area involved the partial melting of a phlogopite- and spinel-bearing lherzolite under an extensional regime in a subduction-related setting. Such an extension event would have caused hot asthenospheric upwelling and was likely triggered by back-arc rifting during subduction of the Paleo-Tethyan oceanic slab. Thus, the magmas are likely subduction-related products, implying that southward subduction of Paleo-Tethys oceanic lithosphere in the region began during the late Carboniferous to early Permian.

ABSTRACT: The element contents and organic matter-element relation between Lias-aged coals exposed in four fields in Gümüşhane and Bayburt were investigated. In general, fixed carbon and gross calorific values of the Edire and Balkaynak coals are higher than Güvercinlik and Çerçi coals. The highest ash yields were observed in the Çerçi coals. The concentrations of Mg, P, Ca, Mo, Y, Ni, U, Zn, Ga, Ba, W, Sr, Ta, and Be of the analysed coals are positively correlated with ash yield, indicating an organic affinity. The Lias-aged coals located in Gümüşhane and Bayburt are low-rank coals.

The amount and type, the inorganic element content, and the maturity of organic materials of Eocene coals, shaly coals, and coaly shales exposed in the Gümüşhane and Bayburt districts of the Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey were investigated. The depositional environments and hydrocarbon potentials were also interpreted. The total organic carbon concentrations in the studied samples ranged from 0.50% to 63.08%. The samples from Özyurt,Kayadibi, and Tarhanas contained types II and III kerogen, and those from Sökmen and Manas contained type III kerogen. The samples contained Co,Cs,Ga,Hf,Th,U,Y,Mo,Be,Cd,Sb,and La,with average values similar to those of standard brown coals. The samples showed average contents of Co,Ga,Nb,Rb,V,Y,Cu,Pb,Zn,As,Be,and Se,similar to those of other Turkish coals. The sediment source of Eocene samples in the five areas was characterized by rocks with intermediate or mafic geochemical characteristics. The terrigenous/aquatic ratio of coal and shaly coal samples of the areas in question is >1. The sterane distribution was C29 > C28 > C27 and C29 > C27 > C28 for the Özyurt and Tarhanas areas, respectively. The average Tmax values for samples are between 424 °C and 460 °C. For samples Oz-1 and Ta-2,22S/(22S + 22R) homohopane (C32) ratios are 0.48 and 0.61,respectively; 20S/(20S + 20R) sterane (C29) ratios are 0.18 and 0.53,respectively; and Ts/(Ts + Tm) ratios are 0.015 and 0.64,respectively. The Pr/Ph ratios of the samples are >3. The studied samples have low sterane/hopane and high (C19+C20)/C23) ratios without anoxic biomarkers (17α(H)-28,30-bisnorhopane). Based on these data, the coals, shaly coals, and coaly shales were probably deposited under an oxic-suboxic mixture of marine and terrestrial environment conditions; these materials contain terrestrial organic matter and cannot generate hydrocarbon.

Sipahi, Ferkan
Skarn deposits are located in the NE Black Sea region of Turkey belonging to the Alpin metallogenic province. The Fe skarn deposit at Arnastal is hosted by Late Cretaceous carbonate rocks comprised of limestone and the skarn occurrence at Camibogazi dolomitic limestone, adjacent to the Eocene Zigana Granitoid. The prograde textures include rhythmic banding, spots, and mossiness, and the retrograde textures are shock-induced and brecciated. These are identified in the Fe skarn deposit at Arnastal, where there are mineral parageneses of andradite, actinolite, tremolite, epidote, quartz, magnetite, and hematite, and less pyrrboune and pyrite. Additionally, well-crystallized vesuvianite, well-crystallized phlogopite, and diopside in the skarn occurrence. at Camibogazi are identified. Some of the skarn minerals are calcic and have high Mg/(Mg + Fe) ratios. Clinopyroxene consists of diopside (Di(96.66-99.04)Hd(0.67-2.80)Jo(0.29-0.55)). Vesuvianite is mostly Mg-rich, and has a very low MnO content (<0.1 %). Other skarn minerals are Fe-rich. Garnet is characterized by oscillatory zoning and has an andradite composition (Ad(72)Gr(28) to Ad(98)Gr(2)). Epidote has an Fe content of 8.96 to 12.42 wt%. Magnetite is generally massive and sporadically banded with some martitization. The formation temperatures of skarn minerals range from 330 to 600 degrees C. In addition, mass change calculations from the granitoid and andesite toward the skarn zone indicate that there is considerable mass transfer of Si, Al, Fe, and Mg to the carbonate rocks during skarn formation. The average mass changes are estimated at a depletion of 41 g/100 g in granitoid and a gain of 8 g/100 g in andesite. Fe skarn deposit and skarn occurrence are characterized by early, high-temperature mineral assemblages dominated by the anhydrous minerals garnet and diopside and late low-temperature assemblages with hydrous minerals, such as vesuvianite, phlogopite, and epidote. The type of garnet and the abundance of magnetite with minor pyrite suggest that the Fe skarn deposit at Arnastal forms under relatively oxidized conditions. The type of clinopyroxene in the skarn occurrence at the Camibogazi shows oxidized skarns.

Aydin, Faruk; Karsli, Orhan; Sadiklar, M. Burhan
Clinopyroxene phenocrysts and microphenocrysts in different series of the Neogene alkaline volcanic rocks from the eastern Pontides (NE Turkey) record various stages in the crystallization conditions and evolution history of the alkaline melt as well as its origin. Crystal chemical studies reveal that the clinopyroxenes in each rock series show strong textural and compositional similarities, which all reflect a common petrogenetic affinity. They have relatively high Mg-numbers (0.68-0.95), variable Al2O3 (1.3-9.6 wt%), low TiO2 (<2.7 wt%) and Na2O (<0.9 wt%) contents and low Al[6]/Al[4] ratios (mostly <0.25), suggesting relatively low-pressure crystallization conditions of the magma in the storage region. The pressures calculated for the clinopyroxenes in each series are nearly similar and vary in the range of 2.4-4.6 ± 0.9 kbars, which approximately corresponds to a crystallization depth of 7-14 ± 3 km. The analyses of the compositional trends of the clinopyroxenes indicate the following types of zoning: (i) oscillatory and sectorial zoning related to melt crystallization (i.e. rapid cooling and crystallization), (ii) oscillatory, reverse zoning related to the different crystallization paths under a variable fluid regime, (iii) normal zoning related to the differentiation and fractional crystallization of the magma. Based on the primitive mantle- and chondrite-normalized trace and rare earth element patterns, all clinopyroxenes have high abundances of incompatible elements (i.e. La, Ce) with negative high field strength element anomalies (i.e. Zr, Ti) and low Nb/Y (0.1-0.2), Th/Y (< 0.1) and Rb/Y (< 0.03) ratios, suggesting derivation from a similar source. Obtained textural and mineral chemical data, as well as whole-rock compositions, thus suggest that the clinopyroxenes may have started to crystallize from alkaline basaltic magma derived from a homogeneous lithospheric mantle enriched by an earlier subduction event. After this process, the alkaline magma, from which early clinopyroxenes crystallized, underwent a relatively low-pressure fractional crystallization process. This was in closed magma chambers at different levels of the crust (or within a volcanic conduit system devoid of interaction processes), shown by variations in the different crystallization paths and in the fluid regime of the melt during differentiation and ascent of the magma, in a post-collisional extensional tectonic regime which affected the eastern Pontides during the Neogene.
AtıfScopus12WoS9OpenAlex16İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2008Scopus SJRQ2Mineralogy, mineral chemistry, and fluid inclusion investigation of Köstere hydrothermal vein-type deposit (Gümüşhane, NE-Turkey)
Demir, Yilmaz; Uysal, Ibrahim; Sadiklar, M. Burhan; Sipahi, Ferkan
Vein type Köstere ores were deposited along cracks formed as a result of NE-SW fault system in the late Cretaceous felsic volcanic rocks in the northeastern Black Sea Region of Turkey. Total silver content of the Köstere ore is controlled by total silver content of the hydrothermal solution, homogenization temperature of the ore minerals and modal abundances of the tetrahedrite-tennantite serie minerals. The Zn/Cd ratios of sphalerites from the Köstere deposit are close to those of granite-related classical vein-type hydrothermal deposits. Furthermore Co/Ni ratio in pyrite separates, higher than unit, suggests an acidic source for the ore forming fluids. Homogenization temperatures of 200-370 °C and salinity of 0-9.85 eq. wt% NaCl were obtained on the basis of fluid inclusions studies measured in quartz minerals. These data indicate that ore formation conditions for the Köstere ore are similar with the vein-type epithermal-mesothermal deposits, related to the magmatic fluids. The overall low salinities of fluids (on average: 5.4 eq. wt% NaCl) suggest that meteoric waters were involved in mineralization. The possibility of interactions between ascending hydrothermal fluids and dilute meteoric waters is supported by geological features and mineralogical data which indicate a shallow depth of mineralization. Torul Pluton, which is the younger acidic unit (72 my) in the area, is suggested to be related to the formation of Köstere deposit.

Aydin, Faruk; Karsli, Orhan; Chen, Bin
Whole-rock geochemistry, Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes and K-Ar data are reported for alkaline samples collected from the Neogene alkaline volcanics (NAVs) in the Eastern Pontides, northeastern Turkey, in order to investigate their source and petrogenesis and geodynamic evaluation of the region. The NAVs were made of three groups that comprise of basanite-tephrite (feldspar-free; Group A), tephrite-tephriphonolite (feldspar and feldspathoid-bearing; Group B) and alkaline basalt-rhyolite (feldspathoid-free; Group C) series. These rocks cover a broad compositional range from silica-undersaturated to silica-oversaturated types, almost all of which are potassic in character. They show enrichment of LREE and LILE and depletion of HFSE, without a Eu anomaly in most of the mafic samples. Textural features and calculated pressures based on the Cpx-barometer in each series indicate that the alkaline magma equilibrated at shallow crustal depths under a pressure of about 3-4.5 kbar and approximating a crystallization depth of 9-14 km. The NAVs are slightly depleted in isotopic composition, with respect to 87Sr/86Sr (ranging from 0.705018 to 0.705643) and 143Nd/144Nd (ranging from 0.512662 to 0.512714) that indicate young Nd model ages (0.51-059 Ga). This may indicate that the parent melts tapped a homogeneous and young lithospheric mantle source which was metasomatized by subduction-derived sediments during the Late Mesozoic. Pb isotopic compositions (206Pb/204Pb = 18.85-18.95; 207Pb/204Pb = 15.60-15.74; 208Pb/204Pb = 38.82-39.25) may also be consistent with a model for an enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle source. Lithospheric thinning and resultant upwelling of asthenosphere induced by lithospheric delamination may have favoured partial melting of chemically enriched, young lithospheric mantle beneath the Eastern Pontides. Then, the melt subsequently underwent a fractional crystallization process along with or without minor amounts of crustal assimilation, generating a wide variety of rock types in a post-collision extensional regime in the Eastern Pontides during the Neogene.
AtıfScopus131OpenAlex137İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2006Scopus SJRQ2Geochemical constraints on the provenance, mineral sorting and subaerial weathering of Lower Jurassic and Upper Cretaceous clastic rocks of the eastern Pontides, Yusufeli (Artvin), NE Turkey
Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Tanyolu, Erkan
An integrated petrographic and geochemical study of the shales and sandstones of Early Jurassic and Late Cretaceous age in the Yusufeli area (Turkey) was carried out to obtain more information on their provenance, sedimentological history and tectonic setting, as well as to evaluate the influence of weathering, hydraulic sorting and recycling processes upon source-rock signature. Depending on their matrix and mineralogical content the Lower Jurassic sandstones are identified as arkosic arenite and wacke, while the Upper Cretaceous sandstones are defined as lithic arenite and wacke. Elemental ratios such as La/Sc, Cr /Ni, Co/Th, Th/Sc and Cr/Th indicate a mafic source for the marjority of each of the sandstone sequences. However, in several samples, high Th/Sc and low Cr/Th ratios suggest a contribution from a felsic source. Using element-ratio diagrams, all of the samples plot along a curve consistent with a two-component mixing model, consisting of a dominant mafic and a subordinate felsic source. The relatively low Cr/Ni ratios provide no support for significant amounts of ultramafic lithologies in the source area. The lower trace-element contents of the studied sandstones in relation to post-Archean Australian shales (PAAS), which are representative of the composition of the upper continental crust, indicate that recycling processes in their source areas were probably less intense than those of the PAAS. The more LREE-depleted patterns of the shales relative to sandstones likely do not reflect changes in source-area composition but, rather, variations in mineral sorting, chemical weathering and/or sediment recycling. Chemical index of alteration (CIA) indices observed in the Lower Jurassic and Upper Cretaceous sediments (average of 53 & 46, respectively) suggest that their source area underwent moderate degrees of chemical weathering processes. However, an upward increase in the values of the CIA indices in the Lower Jurassic profiles may indicate that the source area gradually underwent more intense chemical weathering, possibly due to climatic and/or tectonic variations. On the other hand, an upward decrease in the CIA indices of the Upper Cretaceous profiles generally demonstrate that the sediments were derived from a relatively less-weathered source terrain, reflecting an increased erosion rate likely due to increasing tectonic activity. The compositional immaturity of the analysed sandstone samples is typical of subduction-related environments, and their SiO2/Al2O3 and K2O/Na2O ratios and Co, Sc, Th and Zr contents reflect their oceanic and continental-arc settings.
