Kaplan, Emine Boynueğri; Şüküroğlu, Süleyman; Şüküroğlu, Ebru Emine
This study focuses on enhancing the surface properties and minimizing the mechanical incompatibility between the AZ91 magnesium alloy and the coating by applying CrAlYN/CrYN gradient coatings through the HiPIMS-PVD method, combined with the enlargement of a MgO intermediate layer via the Micro Arc Oxidation (MAO) method. The duplex coating approach was designed to strengthen adhesion and structural integrity between the substrate and the coating. Coating parameters for both MAO and HiPIMS-PVD processes were optimized using a Taguchi L4 orthogonal array, and the coatings were analyzed using SEM, EDS, XRD and scratch testing. MAO coatings exhibited porous and rough surfaces with volcanic morphologies. The best adhesion performance under MAO conditions was achieved with 650 V, 700 Hz, and a Type B solution, resulting in a critical load value of Lc₂ = 24 N. CrAlYN/CrYN gradient coatings alone showed coating thicknesses from 0.83 μm to 1.66 μm with compact and homogeneous microstructures. Adhesive strength was relatively low (Lc₂ = 5–10 N). In the duplex coating configuration, CrAlYN/CrYN coatings were deposited on the MAO-formed MgO layer, significantly increasing adhesion. Critical load values (Lc₂) ranged from 90 to 110 N, with the highest adhesion achieved under low CrY target voltage and current conditions. The findings demonstrate that the MAO/HiPIMS-PVD duplex coating method substantially improves adhesion and surface characteristics of AZ91 alloy, offering a promising solution for advanced surface engineering applications.

AZ31 magnesium alloy is one of the lightweight metallic engineering materials that are widely used in many industrial areas such as aviation, space, automobile and electronics industries, biomedical applications, where structural weight reduction is at the forefront of design principles. This study focuses on the growth of MgO and MgO:B5H10NaO13 doped oxide coatings on the surface of AZ31 magnesium alloy by micro arc oxidation (MAO) method in order to improve its usage areas and lifetime in industrial applications, and to investigate the structural, morphological, adhesion and corrosion properties of the grown coatings. In the study, MgO coatings were grown by MAO method and MgO:B5H10NaO13 doped composite oxide coatings were grown by adding sodium pentaborate (B5H10NaO13) nanoparticles into the electrolytic solution in MAO method. The phase structure of the grown coatings was determined by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), microstructure by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and chemical composition by Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). The hardness of MgO and MgO:B5H10NaO13 doped composite oxide coatings were determined by microhardness tester, the adhesion resistance with the base material was determined by Scratch Tester and the corrosion resistance was determined by potentiodynamic polarization tester. As a result, it was observed that dense and homogeneous coatings were grown on the surfaces of particle-added (MgO:B5H10NaO13) coatings, that porosity and pore sizes on the surfaces of the coatings were reduced, that microcracks were reduced, and that coatings with high bond strength with the base material were grown. It was also determined that the corrosion resistance of the coatings with particle addition (MgO:B5H10NaO13) was higher than the corrosion resistance of the coatings without particle addition (MgO).

Sukuroglu, Suleyman
This study was carried out in order to increase the usage areas of Al 7075 alloy, which is preferred as an engineering material in the aerospace industry, defense industry and automotive industry, in high temperature applications, wear resistance in different environments and corrosion resistance in aggressive environments. For this purpose, the focus was on the growth of Al2O3 and Al2O3:TiB2 doped composite coatings on the surface of Al 7075 aluminum alloy by the MAO method, and the structural, morphological, corrosion, adhesion and wear properties of the grown coatings in three different environments (atmospheric conditions, brine containing 3.5 % NaCl and oil). Firstly, Al2O3 coatings were grown in electrolytic solution number 1. Secandly, Al2O3:TiB2 doped composite coatings were grown in electrolytic solution number 2 and the phase structure, microstructure and chemical composition of the grown coatings were determined by X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, respectively. The abrasion behavior of the coatings in three different environments was determined by a pin-on disc abrasion tester, adhesion resistances were determined by a Scratch Test, and corrosion resistance was determined by a potentiodynamic polarization tester. It was observed that dense and uniform coatings were grown on the surfaces of TiB2 nanoparticle-added (Al2O3:TiB2) coatings, porosity and pore sizes on the surfaces of the coatings were reduced and microcracks were reduced. In addition, it was determined that the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of composite coatings (Al2O3:TiB2) grown with nanoparticle addition increased, and coatings with high bond strength with the substrate were grown.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ4Investigation of friction behavior of TiO2: Al2O3 composite coating formed on AA2024 alloy by micro-arc oxidation
Boynueğri̇ Kaplan, Emine; Şüküroğlu, Ebru Emine
In this study, an alumina (Al2O3) ceramic coating and a composite coating containing titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles were prepared on surfaces of AA2024 substrates by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) treatment. The effects of micro-sized (≈20-30 µm) TiO2 particles incorporated into electrolyte on the microstructure, phase and chemical composition, thickness, and friction behavior of the coating were investigated. The surface morphologies of the coatings were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The phase and chemical compositions of the coatings were evaluated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), respectively. The friction coefficient of the coatings was investigated using a pin-on-disc tribometer under condition of dry slip sliding. Moreover, the wear tracks were analyzed by SEM. Addition of TiO2 particles into the electrolyte resulted in the reduction in number of pores and formation of smaller and more uniform pores in comparison with the Al2O3 ceramic coating. XRD analyses demonstrated that the TiO2:Al2O3 composite coating was composed of anatase-TiO2 and rutile-TiO2, as well as pure aluminum, α-Al2O3 and γ-Al2O3 which are the primary phases. The friction tests showed a significant reduction in the friction coefficient of the composite coated samples which contains titanium oxide (TiO2) particles in comparison with Al2O3 coated and uncoated samples. - MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ1Investigation of wear behavior of graphite additive composite coatings deposited by micro arc oxidation-hydrothermal treatment on AZ91 Mg alloy
Küçükosman, Rıdvan; Emine Şüküroğlu, Ebru; Totik, Yaşar; Şüküroğlu, Süleyman
Composite coatings were deposited on AZ91 magnesium alloys by micro arc oxidation (MAO) and the MAO-hydrothermal treatment (HT). The MAO process of Mg alloys was performed in the silicate/phosphate-based electrolyte with graphite particles size of 5-10 and 75 µm and then the obtained samples were submitted to hydrothermal treatment at 150°C in the graphite-ethanol mixture. The structural and morphological properties of composite coatings were analized X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The wear resistance was examined with ball-on-disc tribometer. The addition of graphite to the MAO electrolyte solution increased the coating thicknesses and compactness and the surface morphologies acquired relatively a homogeneous appearance. The coating surfaces were enriched in graphite by HT and the wear test results showed that the wear resistance of the graphite-doped MAO-HT composite coatings was significantly improved.
