In this study, the microstructure, hardness, tensile strength, and dry wear properties of the cast AlSi10Mg alloy as well as the effects of processing parameters on the oxidation behavior of this alloy were investigated. In this context, AlSi10Mg (wt%) alloy was produced by gravity die casting method, and then, air cooling, quenching, and T6 treatment were applied. The microstructure of the alloy was investigated using an optical microscope, SEM, and EDS. Additionally, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to determine the effect of processing parameters on the oxidation behavior of the samples. The friction and wear properties of the alloy were investigated using a ball-on-disk wear test device. It was founded that the as-cast AlSi10Mg alloy's microstructure contained phases of α(Al), Si, and β-Mg2Si. It has been observed that the microstructure of the cast AlSi10Mg alloy gradually turns into a spherical form when quenching and air-cooling heat treatments are applied. Also, T6 heat treatment led to further spheroidization of Si particles, formation of β-Mg2Si precipitates, and elimination of the Chinese script morphology of the β-Mg2Si phase. It was observed that the yield strength of the AlSi10Mg alloy in the as-cast state decreased negligibly compared to the air-cooled state, while there was an increase of up to 70% in the aging-treated condition. The results show that the tensile strength of the as-cast AlSi10Mg alloy increased by 115% after aging. Additionally, it was found that the AlSi10Mg alloy's wear resistance increased with the aging process.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ1Effect of heat treatment on mechanical and wear properties of Zn–40Al–2Cu–2Si alloy
SAVAŞKAN, Temel; AZAKLI, Zeki; HEKÌMOĞLU, Ali Paşa
In order to determine the effect of heat treatment on the mechanical and wear properties of Zn–40Al– 2Cu–2Si alloy, different heat treatments including homogenization followed by air-cooling (H1), homogenization followed by furnace-cooling (H2), stabilization (T5) and quench–aging (T6 and T7) were applied. The effects of these heat treatments on the mechanical and tribological properties of the alloy were studied by metallography and, mechanical and wear tests in comparison with SAE 65 bronze. The wear tests were performed using a block on cylinder type test apparatus. The hardness, tensile strength and compressive strength of the alloy increase by the application of H1 and T6 heat treatments, and all the heat treatments except T6, increase its elongation to fracture. H1, T5 and T6 heat treatments cause a reduction in friction coefficient and wear volume of the alloy. However, this alloy exhibits the lowest friction coefficient and wear volume after T6 heat treatment. Therefore, T6 heat treatment appears to be the best process for the lubricated tribological applications of this alloy at a pressure of 14 MPa. However, Zn–40Al–2Cu–2Si alloy in the as-cast and heat-treated conditions shows lower wear loss or higher wear resistance than the bronze.

In this study, the screw withdrawal resistance of heat-treated hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.), black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) and Uludag fir (Abies bornmuellerinana Mattf.) was determined according to the ASTM D 1761 standard. For this purpose, wood materials were heat treated at 150, 170, 190 and 210 °C for 3 h. After the heat treatment, the screw withdrawal resistance of the wood was determined in radial, tangential and transverse directions. As a result, the screw withdrawal resistance values decreased with increasing heat treatment temperature and the lowest resistance was obtained in the wood heat-treated at 210 °C. In terms of wood species, the highest screw withdrawal resistance was found in hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.), while the lowest value was observed in black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold). Additionally, in terms of the cross-sectional direction, the highest screw withdrawal resistance was determined in the tangential direction, while the lowest resistance value was observed in the transverse direction.

- MakaleYalnız künye2016Scopus SJRQ1Investigation of structural and tribological properties of electroless Ni-B coated pure titanium
Çelik, Ilhan; Karakan, Mehmet; Bülbül, Ferhat
In the present study, the surface of commercial pure (Grade 2) titanium was coated with electroless Ni-B and, then, it was subjected to heat treatment for an hour at 400°. The surface morphology, microstructure and phase identification were analysed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. Wear behaviour characterisation was carried out using a ball-on-disc tribometer. The results of the analyses showed that the electroless Ni-B coating had a significantly amorphous structure in the as-deposited condition. It was also determined that the coating structure crystallised after the heat treatment and wear resistance of pure titanium increased after electroless Ni-B coating. Particularly, upon the heat treatment, it was observed that wear resistance and surface hardness of pure titanium considerably increased.
