Sirat, Abdulveli
Maize is an important short day cereal with a wide range of uses as a raw material in human and animal nutrition industry. This study was conducted during 2016 and 2017 to identify grain yield and some quality characteristics of dent corn genotypes under semi-arid temperate climate conditions. Twelve (12) dent corn genotypes were utilized as plant material in the study. The research was carried out according to the randomized complete blocks experimental design with three replications. Significant differences were recorded between the genotypes in terms of all traits (except cob length). The plant height ranged 197.90-211.25 cm, with first cob height of 81.24-107.30 cm, cob length of 17.02-19.10 cm, cob diameter of 39.82-50.82 mm, number of kernels per cob of 423.77-590.82, and grain yield of 4650.0-10693.9 kg ha(-1). It was noted that the 1000-grain weight varied between 254.96-348.93 g, hectoliter weight with range of 79.06-89.83 kg hl(-1), starch content in grain between 62.59-69.50%, protein content in grain between 9.22-11.74%, oil content in grain between 2.67-3.98%. The maximum values of plant height and cob length were obtained from the 70May82 variety, and the maximum values of first cob height, cob diameter, grain yield, 1000-kernel weight, hectoliter weight, starch, protein, and oil content in grain were recorded from Kalipso and Samada-07 varieties. Considering these results, it is advisable to grow Kalipso, Samada-07, and 70 May82 varieties as main crops in temperate semi-arid climate of G & uuml;m & uuml;& scedil;hane and surrounding areas of Turkiye.

Cherry laurel (Laurocerasus officinalis) is naturally growing in black sea region in Turkey and the trees has not been spraying with pesticides. In natural growing conditions, all cherry laurel genotypes particularly fruits are seems resistant against pests. Astringent nature of fruits forms a barrier for pests. A total twelve cherry laurel accessions were harvested at full maturation time from various sites in Of district located in eastern black sea region in Turkey. Fruits were analyzed for their total phenolic (TP), total monomeric anthocyanin (TMA), total carotenoid (TC), Vitamin C and for their antioxidant capacity by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) in fruit flesh extract. Variability among accessions was greatest for total phenol (TP) and total anthocyanins content ranged from 154 to 213 mg GAE per 100 g and 397 to 519 mg per 100 g. The results indicated that cherry laurel fruits are superior and unique in terms of bioactive content in particular compared to bioactive rich fruit species.

Sakin, Mehmet A.; Sayaslan, Abdulvahit; Duzdemir, Oral; Yuksel, Ferhat
In this study, pastaquality- associated characteristics of 25 durum wheat genotypes were investigated. Durum wheat genotypes consisted of 13 advanced experimental lines and 12 registered cultivars that were grown in three different locations of Turkey for 2 yr. Genotype, location, year and their interactions were found to be statistically significant in terms of all investigated quality characteristics. Mean quality parameters for the genotypes varied as follows: yellowberry kernel 1.7-6.1%, pigment content 3.67-8.31 mg kg-1, lipoxygenase (LOX) activity 12.9-27.9 EU g-1, protein content 10.8-11.8% (14% mb), gluten index (GI) 12-61, sodium dodecyl sulphate-sedimentation volume 17.3-28.7 mL, specific sedimentation volume 1.60-2.52 mL. Of the genotypes, 10 contained γ-gliadin 45 and six γ-gliadin 42 proteins. Except for Zenit, none of the registered cultivars and advanced experimental lines investigated in this study were able to meet simultaneously the requirements for high-quality pasta products; yet certain experimental lines prevailing in specific quality characteristics, such as Line-Gdem- 2, Line-Gdem-12 and Line-20, may be used for further breeding purposes. The results of this study also imply that grain yield and quality should be taken collectively into consideration in wheat breeding programs.
