EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION THE EFFECTS OF ETHANOL AND DIETHYL ETHER ADDITION INTO DIESEL FUEL ON ENGINE PERFORMANCE AND EXHAUST EMISSIONS

    Sezer, Ismet

In this study, effects of ethanol and diethyl ether addition into diesel fuel on the performance and emissions of a diesel engine were experimentally investigated. A commercial diesel fuel and three different blends prepared with 15% ethanol, 15% ethanol and 2% diethyl ether and 15% ethanol and 4% diethyl ether were used in the tests. The experiments were performed at an engine speed of 1500 rpm and under various loads by using a single cylinder direct injection diesel engine. The injection, combustion, performance and emissions parameters were evaluated for baseline fuel and blends. The results show that, the injection pressure decreases for all blends, and diethyl ether addition causes a delay in the injection timing. The burnt mass fraction is lower for ethanol and diethyl ether blends during early combustion phase, while it increases for diethyl ether blends during the progressive combustion phase. Ethanol and diethyl ether blends also give the reductions in the cylinder pressure and temperature. Air excess coefficient increases the rate by 9.3-10.4%, but exhaust gas temperature decreases the rate by 4.8-5.5% when using ethanol and diethyl ether blends. Although ethanol blend causes a decrement of 1.4% in engine power, reductions in engine power are between 0.3% and 1.1% for diethyl ether blends. Both ethanol and diethyl ether blends yield increments the rate by 14.7-17.2% in brake thermal efficiency and a reduction of 8.5% in brake specific fuel consumption. The reductions were obtained the rate by 6.8-18.2% for NOx and 10.3-13.8% for CO2 emissions, when using the blended fuels. Ethanol and diethyl ether blends cause the increments the rate by 5-12.5% for HC emission, while CO emission fluctuates depending on the engine load.

Therotical investigation of the effects of diesel fuel, biodiesel fuel and their blends on internal combsution engines

    Sezer, Ismet

In this study; the effects of diesel fuel, the soybean oil methyl ester (SOME) biodiesel fuel and their blends at various percentages on the spray and combustion characteristics and engine performance and exhaust emissions of diesel engines investigated as theoretically. For this purpose, a model has been built for a direct injection diesel engine in a commercial vehicle by the Diesel-RK software program that can be used liberally on the net. The obtained values for diesel (D) and biodiesel (BD) fuels and D-BD fuel blends via the constructed model were compared. The results of the study show that BD fuel generally provides a close brake thermal efficiency values to diesel fuel. Additionally, BD fuel causes decrements in engine power and particulate matter (PM-soot) emission and increments in specific fuel consumption and nitric oxides (NOx) emission. On the other hand, D-BD fuel blends at various blend ratios have usually given the spray, combustion, performance, and emission values between those of diesel and biodiesel fuels.

EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION THE EFFECTS OF DIETHYL ETHER-DIESEL FUEL BLENDS ON THE ENGINE PERFORMANCE

    Sezer, Ismet

In this study, the effects of diethyl ether (DEE)-diesel fuel blends on the performance of a diesel engine investigated experimentally. The blends were prepared with the addition of 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 vol. % of DEE with a specified amount of diesel fuel. In the experiments, a single cylinder direct injection (DI) diesel experimental engine was used and compression ratio was fixed at 20. The experiments were performed with neat diesel fuel and DEE-diesel fuel blends at various engine speeds and wide open throttle conditions. The results of the study show that DEE addition to diesel fuel causes to decrease in engine performance parameters, i.e., brake mean effective pressure, brake torque and brake power. The decrement in performance parameters increased with increasing blending ratio. The maximum decrement in brake mean effective pressure was obtained with DEE10 blend as about 5.1%. However, brake thermal efficiency increases and brake specific fuel consumption decreases up to 7.5% DEE blending ratio. The maximum increment in brake thermal efficiency was obtained with DEE7.5 blend as about 10.9%. The same fuel blend gives about 8.7% reduction in brake specific fuel consumption. Additionally, exhaust gas temperature decreases and air excess coefficient increases with increasing DEE blending ratio.

Thermodynamic, performance and emission investigation of a diesel engine running on dimethyl ether and diethyl ether

    Sezer, Ismet

This study investigates the use of dimethyl ether and diethyl ether in diesel engines as alternative fuels. A direct injection diesel engine was simulated via a thermodynamic cycle model for investigation. Thermodynamic and performance parameters besides emissions determined and compared for diesel, dimethyl ether and diethyl ether fuels at two different states. The results showed that dimethyl ether and diethyl ether presented a lower cylinder temperature and pressure, and thus a lower engine performance than diesel fuel for the equal injection conditions. The brake power declines about 32.1% and 19.4% at 4200 rpm while brake specific fuel consumption increases about 47.1% and 24.7% at 2200 rpm for dimethyl ether and diethyl ether, respectively. Engine performance for dimethyl ether and diethyl ether extensively improves for the same equivalence ratio condition, but a more amount of fuel is needed about 64% for dimethyl ether and 32% for diethyl ether. The gains in the brake power by dimethyl ether and diethyl are about 13.6% and 6% at 4200 rpm compared to diesel fuel. The brake specific fuel consumption is also higher about 43.5% for dimethyl ether and 23.6% for diethyl ether than diesel fuel. The brake thermal efficiency for dimethyl ether and diethyl is generally better than diesel fuel. The lower carbon dioxides are obtained by dimethyl and diethyl ethers at all conditions, while carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide are slightly higher for dimethyl and diethyl ethers at equal equivalence ratio condition. Theoretical analysis the use of dimethyl ether and diethyl ether in a diesel engine

    Sezer, Ismet

In this study, the use of dimethyl ether (DME) and diethyl ether (DEE) in diesel engines as alternative fuels investigated. A commercial suction (naturally-aspirated) direct injection (SDI) automobile diesel engine was chosen for investigation. Thermodynamic and performance analysis has been performed via a thermodynamic diesel engine cycle model. Thermodynamic and performance parameters computed and compared for diesel, DME and DEE fuels at two different situations. Results showed that DME and DEE presented the lower cylinder temperature and pressure, so a lower engine performance than diesel fuel for equal injection conditions. Brake power decreases about 32.1% and 19.4% at 4200 rpm while brake specific fuel consumption increases about 47.1% and 24.7% at 2200 rpm for DME and DEE, respectively. However, engine performance of DME and DEE extensively improves for the equal equivalence ratio condition, although more amount of fuel injection about 64 percent for DME and 32 percent for DEE is essential. The increments obtained by DME and DEE are about 13.6% and 6% in brake power at 4200 rpm compared to diesel. Brake specific fuel consumption is still higher about 43.5% for DME and 23.6% for DEE than diesel. Brake thermal efficiency of DME and DEE is generally better than diesel fuel.

Alternative gaseous fuels in port fuel injection spark ignition engines

    Sezer, I.

This paper investigates the use of alternative gaseous fuels in port fuel injection spark ignition engines via the Lotus engine simulation program. To this end, the engine model for a port fuel injection spark ignition engine was designed, and engine performance was determined separately for gasoline and alternative gaseous fuels, i.e. compressed natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas. According to the results, brake thermal efficiency increases while engine performance and fuel consumption decrease with methane and propane when compared to gasoline under the same conditions. While a slight increase in the fuel/air equivalence ratio of gaseous fuels improves the engine performance, fuel consumption remains almost stable. Another factor that enhances engine performance is the increasing compression ratio for methane and propane. In this manner, performance values that are closer/equal to gasoline are achieved. Under these conditions, fuel consumption decreases notably, while significant increases are observed in brake thermal efficiency.
