Sustainable Mining: Environmental Challenges, Mine Tailings Management and Technological Innovations

    Orak, Mürsel

Mining provides essential raw materials for global economic development; however, it is also associated with significant environmental impacts including land degradation, water contamination, and the generation of large volumes of mine tailings. Sustainable mining has emerged as a strategic framework aimed at balancing economic benefits with environmental protection and social responsibility. This study presents a comprehensive review of sustainable mining practices with particular emphasis on environmental impacts, mine tailings management strategies, acid mine drainage mitigation, and innovative technologies such as cemented paste backfill (CPB). In addition, the role of circular economy approaches, digital mining technologies, and mine closure strategies in improving sustainability performance is discussed. The findings indicate that integrating advanced tailings management strategies and technological innovations can significantly reduce environmental risks and enhance the long-term sustainability of mining operations.

Slag Substitution Effect on Features of Alkali-Free Accelerator-Reinforced Cemented Paste Backfill

    Cavusoglu, Ibrahim

Cemented paste backfill (CPB) improves underground stability by filling mine voids, but the high cost of cement presents economic challenges for miners. While alternative binders and admixtures have been explored, the combined impact of slag substitution and alkali-free (AF) accelerators on CPB performance is not yet fully understood. This study investigates the influences of slag substitution and AF accelerators on the performance of CPB through a comprehensive experimental approach. CPB samples were prepared with slag substitution ratios of 25%, 50%, and 75%, maintaining a fixed AF accelerator content of 0.4%. Various test techniques, including unconfined comprehensive strength (UCS), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal analysis (TG/DTA), were employed to study their mechanical and microstructural properties. Monitoring tests were also conducted to thoroughly assess the performance of CPB, including suction (self-desiccation), electrical conductivity (EC), and volumetric water content (VWC) tests. The results showed that the PCI50–SL50–0.4AF sample exhibited 2.3 times higher strength than the control sample for 28 days, with this improvement attributed to enhanced pozzolanic reactions contributing to better microstructural compactness. Monitoring tests revealed accelerated hydration kinetics and reduced water content in slag-reinforced CPB, highlighting the significant role of AF accelerator in facilitating rapid setting and improving early-age mechanical strength. Microstructural findings revealed that porosity decreased and C–S–H gel formation increased in the specimen containing slag and AF accelerators, contributing to increased strength and durability. These findings highlight the potential usage of slag and AF accelerators to enhance CPB’s mechanical, microstructural, and hydration properties, offering significant benefits for mining operations by improving backfill performance, while contributing to environmental sustainability through reduced cement consumption and associated CO2 emissions.

Engineering Properties of Cemented Paste Backfill with Full-Range Water-Reducing Admixture

    Cavusoglu, Ibrahim; Fall, Mamadou

This paper presents the effects of a full-range water-reducing (FRWR) admixture on the key engineering properties of cemented paste backfill (CPB). CPB samples with a certain slump are prepared with 4.5% cement by mass of the tailings and different dosages of an FRWR admixture (superplasticizer contents of 1%, 3%, and 5%) to evaluate their water demand during hydration, rheological properties, self-desiccation ability, and microstructural and mechanical properties. Moreover, cement paste samples with a high water-to-cement ratio (w/c = 2) which are used to model the cement matrix of the CPB are prepared for x-ray diffraction (XRD) scanning and thermal analyses (TAns). The results show that the addition of an FRWR admixture to the studied CPB can reduce its water demand by up to 23% and significantly increase its strength from 1.0 MPa to 2.38 MPa (by approximately 2.4 times) at 28 days. The pore volume of the CPB samples is also significantly reduced from 27.17 to 18.27% due to the capability of the FRWR admixture to reduce water demand. Also, the addition of an FRWR admixture to the CPB results in a substantial decrease (up to 83%) of its yield stress, thereby improving its flowability. The CPB samples with an FRWR admixture are found to have a higher negative pore water pressure, i.e., higher self-desiccation, than the CPB sample without an FRWR admixture. The microstructural analysis also shows that the FRWR admixture has an increasing effect on the hydration products in the CPB mixture.

IMPORTANCE OF STATIC TESTS FOR THE PREDICTION OF AMD POTENTIAL OF CEMENTED PASTE BACKFILL

Cihangir, Ferdi; Koc, Ercument; Orak, Mursel; Deveci, Taha Yavuz; Ercikdi, Bayram; Trofymchuk, O.; Rivza, B.

Cemented paste backfill (CPB) is an engineering mixture of mine tailings, cement and water. Tailings can commonly contain sulphidic minerals. In this case, acid mine drainage (AMD) may occur due to the oxidation of sulphidic minerals present in the body of the CPB. In general, AMD lowers the pH of the medium and water environment and may cause heavy metal release. Therefore, AMD potential is an important parameter to be considered with regard to environmental aspect. Static tests are widely used to determine the AMD potential of sulphidic materials. When neutralization capacity is higher than the acid generation potential, tailings can be safely stored from an environmental point of view. In this study, AMD potential of CPB material produced from sulfur-containing fine tailings is investigated. In this scope, a static modified ABA test was performed on fine sulphidic tailings (TA) and CPB produced from the same sulphidic tailings+7%wt. SR5 cement+water for the first time. Findings suggests that the CPB material had a lower AMD potential (~10%) compared to the tailings. Acid generation capacity of both tailings and the CPB was found to be dominant due to the high sulphide content (~30%wt. and ~28%wt.), respectively. However, CPB was observed to maintain its structural integrity and did not release acidic water for at least 40 weeks. This study showed that a well-designed CPB can be effectively used as an environmentally friendly mine tailings management method.

Utilization of granulated marble wastes and waste bricks as mineral admixture in cemented paste backfill of sulphide-rich tailings

Ercikdi, Bayram; Külekci, Gökhan; Yilmaz, Tekin

This study presents the utilisation of granulated marble wastes (MW) as an additive (10-30 wt%) and waste bricks (WB) as replacement and additive (15-45 wt%) to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) for cemented paste backfill (CPB) of sulphide tailings. OPC was used as binder at 7 wt% dosage. Pozzolanic activity tests showed that the fineness of the WB samples, not the chemical composition, is the major factor affecting their pozzolanic activity. Although they do not exhibit any pozzolanic activity, the use of MW samples as an additive to OPC improves acid buffering capacity of CPB samples and enhances their short and long-term mechanical performance. The UCSs of CPB samples increased with increasing additive rates and decreased with increasing replacement ratios. All CPB samples produced the desired strength and durability when MW and WB were used as an additive to OPC. However, a binder dosage of >7 wt% was required to produce the desired 28-day strength of ≥0.7 MPa when the OPC was replaced by 15-45 wt% WB samples. The durability (i.e. no loss of strength) of CPB samples is closely inter-related with the calcination temperatures and glass phase content of WB.

Strength and ultrasonic properties of cemented paste backfill

Ercikdi, Bayram; Yilmaz, Tekin; Külekci, Gökhan

This paper presents the strength (UCS) and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) properties of cemented paste backfill (CPB) produced from two different mill tailings (Tailings T1 and T2). A total of 240 CPB samples with diameter × height of 5 × 10 cm and 10 × 20 cm prepared at different binder dosages (5-7 wt.%) and water-to-cement ratios (3.97-5.10) were subjected to the UPV and UCS tests at 7, 14, 28 and 56-days of curing periods. UCS and UPV of CPB samples increased with increasing the binder dosage and reducing the w/c ratio irrespective of the sample size and tailings type. CPB samples with a diameter × height of 5 × 10 cm were observed to produce consistently higher (up to 1.69-fold) UCSs than those of 10 × 20 cm CPB samples at all binder dosages and w/c ratios. However, at the corresponding binder dosages and w/c ratios, the maximum variation of UPV between the CPB samples of 5 × 10 cm and 10 × 20 cm was only 7.45%. Using the method of least squares regression, the UCS values were correlated with the UPV values for CPB samples of 10 × 20 cm in size. A linear relation with a high correlation coefficient appeared to exist between the UCS and UPV for CPB samples. These findings suggest that the UPV is essentially independent of the sample size. In this regard, the UPV test can be suitably exploited for the rapid estimation of the strength and quality of CPB samples even using small samples with concomitant benefits of reducing sample size.

Assessment of strength properties of cemented paste backfill by ultrasonic pulse velocity test

Yilmaz, Tekin; Ercikdi, Bayram; Karaman, Kadir; Külekçi, Gökhan

Ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) test is one of the most popular non-destructive techniques used in the assessment of the mechanical properties of concrete or rock materials. In this study, the effects of binder type/dosage, water to cement ratio (w/c) and fines content (<20 μm) of the tailings on ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) of cemented paste backfill (CPB) samples were investigated and correlated with the corresponding unconfined compressive strength (UCS) data. A total of 96 CPB samples prepared at different mixture properties were subjected to the UPV and UCS tests at 7, 14, 28 and 56-days of curing periods. UPV and UCS of CPB samples of ordinary Portland cement (CEM I 42.5 R) and sulphate resistant cement (SRC 32.5) initially increased rapidly, but, slowed down after 14 days. However, UPV and UCS of CPB samples of the blast furnace slag cement (CEM III/A 42.5 N) steadily increased between 7 and 56 days. Increasing binder dosage or reducing w/c ratio and fines content (<20 μm) increased the UCS and UPV of CPB samples. UPV was found to be particularly sensitive to fines content. UCS data were correlated with the corresponding UPV data. A linear relation appeared to exist between the UCS and UPV of CPB samples. These findings have demonstrated that the UPV test can be reliably used for the estimation of the strength of CPB samples.
