Innovation and Competitive Characteristics in Local Forest Industry Enterprises: A Case Study; [Inovacijska i konkurentska obilježja lokalnih poduzeća drvne industrije: studija slučaja]

    Komut, Osman; Karabulut, Ayşenur

The forest products industry makes significant contributions to national economies in terms of basic economic indicators such as employment, expansion into rural areas, added value, investment and exports. This study aims to measure the innovation perception, awareness and competitiveness of small and medium-sized forest products enterprises operating in local areas on the basis of different variables. Within the scope of the study, a data collection tool including on-site observation, interviews and the developed scale was used on enterprises located in a local administrative region. The data obtained were subjected to hypothesis testing and correlation analysis. The findings revealed that the perception of innovation in small and medium-sized forest products industry enterprises is affected by demographic factors related to the enterprise managers, and basic factors related to the enterprise such as the number of employees, field of activity, duration of activity, annual average income, and product distribution channels. Furthermore, it has been determined that innovation awareness decreases as the scale of the enterprises shrinks. As a result, it can be said that the innovation and competition characteristics that are valid in the global and national forest products industry market are not yet fully applicable to local-scale and low-capacity enterprises.

Investigation of Noise Exposure Levels in Furniture Industry: The Impact of Enterprise Scale and Machine Operational States; [Istraživanje razina izloženosti buci u industriji namještaja: utjecaj veličine poduzeća i radnih stanja strojeva]

Öztürk, Erhan; Komut, Osman; Fidan, Muhammed Said

The furniture industry is characterized by the intensive use of cutting, shaping, and surface-treating machinery, which naturally generates high noise levels. This study aimed to assess noise exposure levels in furniture manufacturing facilities by examining the effects of enterprise scale, machine types, and working conditions (loaded and unloaded) on occupational health and safety (OHS). The study was conducted in a total of 30 enterprises, 10 at each enterprise scale level. Physical risk factor data for noise were recorded using on-site measurements for the machines and production lines used at each enterprise level, depending on various variables. ANOVA, T-test, and Correlation analyses were performed to determine the relationships between the variables. The results revealed that small-scale businesses were the riskiest group in terms of noise levels. Generally, although measured noise levels in workplaces remain below the highest exposure action value of 85 dB, critical levels have been detected under specific machinery and working conditions. In machine-based assessments, the critical machines exceeding the highest exposure value of 85 dB are: In small-scale businesses – planing machine (95.26 dB), circular saw (88.08 dB) and band saw (86.81 dB); in micro-scale businesses – CNC drilling machine (91.13 dB), CNC sizing machine (88.01 dB) and band saw (85.95 dB); and in medium-scale businesses – circular saw (85.24 dB). As a result of the study, it has been emphasized that long-term noise exposure poses a risk to employees’ hearing health and that preventive measures are therefore mandatory.

Chemical Content and Antimicrobial Activities of Essential Oils Obtained from Plant Parts of Juniperus excelsa M. Bieb.; [Kemijski sastav i antimikrobno djelovanje eteričnih ulja dobivenih iz dijelova biljke Juniperus excelsa M. Bieb.]

    Saruhan, Emrah; Öz, Mehmet

This study was conducted to determine the chemical content, antibacterial, and antifungal properties of essential oil obtained from the parts of the plant called Juniperus excelsa M. Bieb. In this study, essential oils of cone, needle, and twig of J. excelsa plant, which is a naturally grown plant in Gümüşhane province, were obtained by hydrodistillation method in a Clevenger type device. Chemical composition of essential oils was determined thanks to the analysis conducted with GC-MS/FID device. Besides, antimicrobial activity tests of essential oils were decided in contrast to 23 different microorganisms with the disc diffusion method. As a result of the essential oil analysis of J. excelsa, the percentage of essential oil yield in cones, needles, and twigs was found as 5.88 %, 2.00 %, and 0.62 %, respectively. α-pinene was confirmed to be the most abundant main compound found in the essential oils of cones, needles, and twigs. As a result of the essential oil analysis of the cone, needle, and twig of J. excelsa species, it was revealed that monoterpenes were the most abundant chemical class in terms of percentage. In the antimicrobial activity test performed on the essential oils of J. excelsa plant parts, it was found that cones, needles, and twigs have a strong antimicrobial effect against Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enteritidis, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, Penicillum expansum, Saccharomyces cerevisiae bacteria, yeast, and molds.
