The large area of the mountainous and rugged areas in Turkiye have enabled the development of plateau activities and plateau culture. Plateaus, which are traditionally used for animal husbandry in Turkiye, have a characteristic of temporary settlement areas that are used for grazing animals, for small-scale agricultural activities or holiday in the summer months. Gumuhane (especially the lands in the north of the province) and its surroundings, where agricultural lands are narrow and fragmented, are among the areas where plateaus activities the most intense in our country. The plateaus, where the grass stays green for a long time, have significance for the people who are busy with animal husbandry in the region. Highlands, besides having various features, are also almost a hidden treasure of a cultural accumulation. Communities who changed their places for thousands of years between the plateau and winter season for animal husbandry first in Central Asia and then in Anatolia, they have evolved their culture as a result of their economic activities and geographical areas. Plateau cuisine is one of the most important elements of this culture. Plateau cuisine is one of the indispensable phenomena of plateau life, which has been practiced for centuries in Turkish social life. Plateau cuisine culture has gained a private identity with the addition of distinctive elements in many ways by time. Formation of culinary culture effected by many aspects. Such as; geographical region, socio-economic structure, traditions and customs, agriculture, animal husbandry, and technological developments. In the scope of this study, the last point reached by the plateau cuisine culture, which is a cultural heritage element, has been handled, and the positive and negative aspects of the plateau cuisine culture have been discussed in terms of development. To determine the current situation regarding the plateau cuisine on -site, the Gumuhane plateaus were carried out, where is one of the provinces of the Eastern Black Sea Region. The scope of these studies yielded with many interviews who are becoming highland residents, headmen, business owners, and various stakeholders. According to analyses, the plateau cuisine culture was categorized into four main themes and ten sub -themes. These four main themes constitute the basic structure of the Gumuhane plateau cuisine culture; it was concluded that animal products, agricultural products, local products, edible wild plants, and mushrooms. Each categorized theme was evaluated in the findings section based on the statements of the participants, observation and secondary data. Moreover, there is a decrease in the number of animals herded and the amount of cultivated land in the plateaus, the amount of animal and agricultural products produced by the plateau people in the past was high, but nowadays the households living in the plateaus are trying to produce enough for themselves in general, from the markets established in the central plateaus or from the markets close to the districts, and it was determined that they bought their basic needs. In addition, local foods made in the plateau are listed and it has been observed that the local food culture continues by using products specific to the region. Finally, suggestions have been offered to keep alive the plateau cuisine culture, ensure its continuity and transmit it to future generations as a cultural element.

In this study, the building-ground relationship in the areas affected by the February 6 Kahramanmaras earthquakes was determined, and the risk of building collapse in future earthquakes was analyzed. Remote sensing techniques determined the collapsed building-soil relationship, and the frequency ratio method was applied by utilizing Geographic Information Systems techniques to assess the risk of collapse in earthquakes. According to the research results, 84% of the collapses occurred in flat areas. On the other hand, 49.7% of the collapses occurred in the 0-500 m elevation range. In particular, it was determined that 46% (110.8 km(2)) of the collapsed buildings occurred on alluvial land belonging to the Quaternary period. According to the earthquake frequency analysis of the total 108,812 km(2) area considered in this study, 43.72% of the area is at the Risky level, indicating that a large part of the region is at significant earthquake risk. Moreover, Hatay, Adana, Osmaniye, Sanliurfa, Kahramanmaras, and Malatya are the provinces where the risk of collapse of buildings in an earthquake is high. These results reveal the necessity of analyzing by considering many criteria in determining residential areas in provinces at risk of earthquakes.

3D data integration for geo-located cave mapping based on unmanned aerial vehicle and terrestrial laser scanner data

The Akçakale cave is a significant natural and cultural heritage site in the Black Sea region of eastern Turkey. The complex geometry and difficult-to-access areas of the cave have made the use of traditional mapping methods challenging. To overcome these limitations, this study utilized TLS and UAV technology to produce highly accurate 2D and 3D data for cave management and risk assessment purposes. The TLS system was used to create a detailed 3D point cloud of the cave interior, while the UAV system generated a 3D model of the surface topography outside the cave. The two sets of data were combined in the GIS environment using a geodetic network established in the study area, providing a common geodetic reference system for both TLS and UAV data. The study found that the cave area is 13,750 m2, which is smaller than the area of 18,000 m2 that was previously estimated using conventional measurement methods. The volume and ceiling heights of the cave were calculated using the elevation models generated from TLS point cloud data. The 3D point cloud data were also used to map dripstone locations on the floor and ceiling of the cave, and the boundaries of rock blocks on the ground were precisely determined. The study identified potential risks associated with the cave, particularly the risk of rockfall in the source rock areas around the cave entrance and the southern part of the cave. The nearest building to the cave is approximately 35 meters away, and all the buildings in the area are less than 300 meters from the cave. In the event of the cave collapse, the buildings in the southern part of the cave are at risk of rockfall. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of combining data from TLS and UAV systems to generate broad and sensitive cave mapping and risk assessment data, which are critical for cave management and safety. The collected data can be used for cave stability investigations and rockfall risk assessments. This study provides a foundation for future explorations of the Akcakale cave and highlights the potential for modern surveying techniques to enhance our understanding of complex geological structures such as caves.

Stability evaluation of the Gümüşhane-Akçakale cave by numerical analysis method

Alemdag, Selcuk; Zeybek, Halil Ibrahim; Kulekci, Gokhan

The Akçakale Cave is located in the vicinity of the Arsa neighborhood within the boundaries of the Akçakale village, Gümüşhane, Turkey. The cave is rich in cave formations (stalactite, stalagmite, cave pearl, cave flower, wall travertines). Thus, the appropriateness of opening the cave to visitors to boost tourism is of importance for the local and national economy. This study analyzes the stability of the Akçakale Cave using a numerical analysis method. According to the results of the total displacement analysis, there are displacements in the entrance, ceiling, and sidewalls of the cave ranging from 1 mm to 48 mm. It seems that the entrance, ceiling, and sidewalls of the cave face a high risk of local or sudden collapse. According to the deformation analysis of the length section of the cave examined, local collapses may occur especially in the first 75 m from the entrance of the cave. We believe that this situation would not carry a risk for the Arsa neighborhood for now. In conclusion, the results of the stability analysis and in-situ observations showed clear evidence of former and ongoing cave-ins (collapses) and the Akçakale Cave faces a high risk of local or sudden collapse. Thus, although the Akçakale Cave is one of the most prominent karst caves in Turkey, it seems to be not appropriate to open the cave to tourist visits.
