- Derleme MakaleAçık Erişim2021Current Status of Forage Crops Cultivation and Strategies for the Future in Turkey: A Review
Tan, Mustafa; Yolcu, Halil
Forage crops cultivation area in Turkey is 2.312 million ha in 2020. The rate of forage cultivation in the total agricultural area is 6.1%, and its rate in the field land is 12.3%. Lucerne, silage corn, oat, vetch, and sainfoin are main forage crops in Turkey. The amount of produced is 16.8 million tons of hay and 48.8 thousand tons of seeds. The forage crop cultivation areas have increased by 206% since the beginning of the 2000s due to the government subsidies. However, shortage of quality roughage is still a big problem for animal husbandry of the country. For this reason, new strategies should be developed to increase forage cultivation areas by considering global warming, drought, and climate change. In order to meet the need for roughage, it is necessary to expand the cultivation area of forage crops as winter catch crops and second crops. In addition, some of the fallow fields should be utilized by growing drought-resistant forage species. The fields abandoned due to different problems should be used for the cultivation of suitable forage crops.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Can Zeolite Application Decrease the Need for Nitrogen in Silage Corn?
Gül, Zeynep; Tang, Mustafa; Yolcu, Halil
The effects of applications of zeolite, nitrogen and zeolite + nitrogen on yield, quality and some morphological traits of silage corn was researched at the Research Station of the Agriculture Faculty, University of Ataturk, Eastern Turkey, during 2012 and 2013. Treatments included a control, three zeolite (Z(1): 500, Z(2): 1000, Z(3): 1500 kg ha(-1)), three nitrogen (N-1: 50, N-2: 100, N-3: 150 kg ha(-1)) and nine combinations of zeolite + nitrogen. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks with three replications. The application of zeolite + nitrogen application enhanced silage yield by 5.8-18.9%, dry matter yield by 4.5-21.4%, corncob rate by 6.6%, plant height by 3.0-16.1% and leaf rate by 17.5%. Further, the application of zeolite + medium or low nitrogen application produced similar silage yield, dry matter yield, dry matter rate, crude protein content, ADF, NDF, corncob rate, stem rate, plant height and leaf rate in comparison to the highest level nitrogen application. The results indicate that the application of zeolite + nitrogen can be used to increase efficiency of nitrogen and to decrease nitrogen requirements in silage corn for yield and other parameters.

Yesilsoy cultivar took the first place with 12123.3 kg / ha(-1) in terms of green grass yield. In terms of hay yield, Arisoy cultivar gave the highest value with 5003 kg / ha(-1). The highest values in ADF, NDF and Crude protein content were Bravo 37.51%, Ataem-7 37.48%, Bravo 46.72%, Yesilsoy 46.48%, Bravo 13.96%, Ataem-7 13%, 95 respectively gave the highest values. In terms of sowing time, sowing time of 1 April gave the highest results among the parameters examined. Therefore, while sowing time on April 1 was determined as the most suitable planting, Nova, Arisoy, Ataem-7, Yesilsoy and Yemsoy varieties were the prominent varieties in terms of green, dry grass and crude protein.
- Derleme MakaleAçık Erişim2016Higher PUFA and n-3 PUFA, conjugated linoleic acid, α-tocopherol and iron, but lower iodine and selenium concentrations in organic milk: a systematic literature review and meta- and redundancy analyses

Demand for organic milk is partially driven by consumer perceptions that it is more nutritious. However, there is still considerable uncertainty over whether the use of organic production standards affects milk quality. Here we report results of meta-analyses based on 170 published studies comparing the nutrient content of organic and conventional bovine milk. There were no significant differences in total SFA and MUFA concentrations between organic and conventional milk. However, concentrations of total PUFA and n-3 PUFA were significantly higher in organic milk, by an estimated 7 (95% CI -1, 15)% and 56 (95% CI 38, 74) %, respectively. Concentrations of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), very long-chain n-3 fatty acids (EPA + DPA + DHA) and conjugated linoleic acid were also significantly higher in organic milk, by an 69 (95% CI 53, 84) %, 57 (95% CI 27, 87)% and 41 ( 95% CI 14, 68) %, respectively. As there were no significant differences in total n-6 PUFA and linoleic acid (LA) concentrations, the n-6:n-3 and LA: ALA ratios were lower in organic milk, by an estimated 71 (95% CI -122, -20)% and 93 (95% CI -116, -70) %. It is concluded that organic bovine milk has a more desirable fatty acid composition than conventional milk. Meta-analyses also showed that organic milk has significantly higher alpha-tocopherol and Fe, but lower I and Se concentrations. Redundancy analysis of data from a large cross-European milk quality survey indicates that the higher grazing/conserved forage intakes in organic systems were the main reason for milk composition differences.
- Derleme MakaleAçık Erişim2016Composition differences between organic and conventional meat: a systematic literature review and meta-analysis
Srednicka-Tober, Dominika; Baranski, Marcin; Seal, Chris; Sanderson, Roy; Benbrook, Charles; Steinshamn, Havard; Gromadzka-Ostrowska, Joanna; Rembialkowska, Ewa; Skwarlo-Sonta, Krystyna; Eyre, Mick
Demand for organic meat is partially driven by consumer perceptions that organic foods are more nutritious than non-organic foods. However, there have been no systematic reviews comparing specifically the nutrient content of organic and conventionally produced meat. In this study, we report results of a meta-analysis based on sixty-seven published studies comparing the composition of organic and non-organic meat products. For many nutritionally relevant compounds (e.g. minerals, antioxidants and most individual fatty acids (FA)), the evidence base was too weak for meaningful meta-analyses. However, significant differences in FA profiles were detected when data from all livestock species were pooled. Concentrations of SFA and MUFA were similar or slightly lower, respectively, in organic compared with conventional meat. Larger differences were detected for total PUFA and n-3 PUFA, which were an estimated 23 (95% CI 11, 35)% and 47 (95% CI 10, 84)% higher in organic meat, respectively. However, for these and many other composition parameters, for which meta-analyses found significant differences, heterogeneity was high, and this could be explained by differences between animal species/meat types. Evidence from controlled experimental studies indicates that the high grazing/forage-based diets prescribed under organic farming standards may be the main reason for differences in FA profiles. Further studies are required to enable meta-analyses for a wider range of parameters (e.g. antioxidant, vitamin and mineral concentrations) and to improve both precision and consistency of results for FA profiles for all species. Potential impacts of composition differences on human health are discussed.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2015Nutritive Value of Sunflower Silages Ensiled with Corn or Alfalfa at Different Rate
Tan, Mustafa; Yolcu, Halil; Dumlu Gul, Zeynep
Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) having shorter growing season, better cold tolerant and more drought resistant is important alternative silage plant in highlands. But it has poor silage quality. To improve the quality of sunflower silage can be mixed an appropriate amount of corn (Zea mays L.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). This research was carried out to evaluate quality characteristics of nine silage types: Sunflower, corn and alfalfa silages; plus their some mixtures silages (75% sunflower + 25% corn, 50% sunflower + 50% corn, 25% sunflower + 75% corn, 75% sunflower + 25% alfalfa, 50% sunflower + 50% alfalfa and 25% sunflower + 75% alfalfa); at two harvest stages: Beginning of flowering for sunflower and alfalfa and milk-dough stage for corn (early stage), and end of flowering stage for sunflower and alfalfa, and dough stage for corn (late stage). The experimental design was in a factorial arrangement of randomized complete block with replicated four times. Dry matter content (DM), crude protein content (CP), neutral detergent fiber content (NDF), acid detergent fiber content (ADF), silage pH and physical characteristics (PC) of silages were determined in this study. Mixing of alfalfa in NDF, ADF and CP and corn in DM, pH and PC had positively effect in sunflower silages. Late stage had positively affected DM, PC and pH for silage. Consequently, sunflower silages mixed with corn, with the condition of not being less than 50% at late stage, are recommended for farmers.

Okcu, Melih; Yolcu, Halil; Tan, Mustafa

According to the results of the research study, some of the PGPR treatments had positive effect on morphological characteristics (especially PFC82, BA361 and PAB58), dry matter yield (very little PAA362), crude protein (very little PFC82), ADF and NDF (especially BA361) and macro and micro-elements (especially PAA362) of Hungarian vetch.
- MakaleYalnız künye2011Application of cattle manure, zeolite and leonardite improves hay yield and quality of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) under semiarid conditions
Yolcu, Halil; Seker, Hayati; Gullap, M. Kerim; Lithourgidis, Anastasios; Gunes, Adem
A field experiment was conducted under semiarid conditions to investigate the effect of cattle manure (20 and 40 t ha -1), zeolite (250, 500 and 750 kg ha -1), and leonardite (250, 500 and 750 kg ha -1) applications on hay yield and nutrient quality of annual ryegrass. Application of manure, leonardite, and zeolite increased ryegrass hay yield by 4, 24 and 47%, respectively compared with the control. In all fertilizer levels, the crude protein (CP) content was greater than the control and increased as the level of each fertilizer was increased. Most fertilizer treatments (except from the first level of cattle manure) gave higher CP yield than the control. All fertilizers increased the content of K, S, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn and B of ryegrass hay as compared with the control, whereas they had no significant effect on Cu and Zn content. The content of most minerals increased as the amount of manure and leonardite applications increased. In conclusion, all fertilizers (especially zeolite) showed great potential for use in organic agriculture as they can improve plant growth and soil conditions in the long term.
- MakaleYalnız künye2011Effect of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria and manure on yield and quality characteristics of Italian ryegrass under semi arid conditions
Yolcu, Halil; Turan, Metin; Lithourgidis, Anastasios; Çakmakçi, Ramazan; Koç, Ali
Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) appeared as a promising alternative for organic fertilization. A field experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of PGPR and solid cattle manure application on yield, quality, and mineral concentrations of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) under semi arid conditions in Turkey. The treatments included: three manure application rates (i.e. M1, 10; M2, 20; and M3, 30 Mg ha -1), five PGPR strains (i.e. RC11, Bacillus subtilis; RC21, Variovorax paradoxus; RC105, Paenibacillus polymyxa; RP24/3, Paenibacillus polymyxa; and RF29/2, Pseudomonas putida), and a control (without bacteria or manure application). Manure application did not increase yield of Italian ryegrass, whereas the treatments with RC21 and RP24/3 rhizobacteria provided the highest dry matter yield. All PGPR and manure applications increased crude protein concentration of Italian ryegrass. The M3 manure rate and most treatments with PGPR (except RC11) produced greater crude protein yield than that of control. In addition, concentrations of P, S, Mg, Cu, Zn, and Fe in most PGPR and manure applications were greater than those of control.

Yolcu, Halil
A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of some organic and chemical fertilizers on morphological, yield and quality properties and mineral contents of common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) between 2007 and 2008 in Gümüşhane, Turkey. Treatments were control (no fertilizer), liquid manure (LM = 51-52 L ha -1N), chemical fertilizer (CF = 30 kg N ha -1+ 80-100 kg P 2O 5ha -1), three leonardite doses (L 1= 2.8; L 2= 5.6 and L 3= 8.4 kg N ha -1), three zeolite doses (Z 1= 0.4; Z 2= 0.8 and Z 3= 1.2 N kg ha -1) and three solid cattle manure doses (SM 1= 34-35 kg N ha -1, SM 2= 68-70 kg N ha -1, SM 3= 102-105 kg N ha -1). Dry hay yield (DHY), leaf weight, stem weight, plant height, leaf number, crude protein content (CP), crude protein yield (CPY), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), Ca, Fe, K, Mg, B, Cu, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S and Zn contents were determined. Organic and chemical fertilizer applications had significant effect (P<0.01) on DHY, leaf weight, stem weight, CP, CPY and mineral contents except leaf number, ADF and NDF in the both years. The plant height were significantly (P<0.05) affected by the treatments in the first year. The SM 2application in the first year and control and LM applications in the second year resulted to obtain improved yield components and crude protein yield. Z 2and Z 3applications also loomed large in terms of mineral contents.

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of solid, liquid and the combination of solid and liquid cattle manure applications on the yield, quality and mineral content of common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) + barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) intercropping mixture in 2006-2007 at Gümüşhane, Turkey. The treatments were control (no manure), two liquid (L1 = 10 000 L ha-1 liquid cattle manure and L2 = 20 000 L ha-1 liquid cattle manure), two solid (S1 = 20 ton ha-1 solid cattle manure, S2= 40 ton ha-1 solid cattle manure) and four different combinations of liquid and solid cattle manure applications (S1L1 = 20 ton ha-1 solid cattle manure + 10 000 L ha-1 liquid cattle manure, S1L2 = 20 ton ha-1 solid cattle manure + 20 000 L ha-1 liquid cattle manure, S2L1 = 40 ton ha-1 solid cattle manure + 10 000 L ha-1 liquid cattle manure, and S2L2 = 40 ton ha-1 solid cattle manure + 20 000 L ha-1 liquid cattle manure). Total forage dry matter yield (TFDMY), crude protein content (CP), crude protein yield (CPY), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), dry matter intake (DMI), dry digestible matter (DDM), relative feed value (RFV) and mineral contents (Mg, Ca, K, P, Na, Mn, Zn, Fe and Cu) were determined to evaluate the effects of different cattle manure applications on intercropping mixtures. Solid, liquid and the combined cattle manure treatments had no effect on the TFDMY, CPY, ADF, NDF, DMI, DDM, RFV, Mg, Ca, K, Mn and Zn of the intercropping mixture except CP (p<0.01), P (p<0.01), Na (p<0.05), Fe (p<0.05) and Cu (p<0.05) in the first year. The treatments had significant effects on TFDMY (p<0.01), CP (p<0.01), ADF (p<0.05), NDF (p<0.01), DMI (p<0.01), DDM (p<0.05), RFV (p<0.01) and Zn (p<0.01) values of the intercropping mixture except CPY, Mg, Ca, K, P, Na, Mn, Fe and Cu in the second year. The results of the study revealed that the common vetch and barley intercropping mixture can be fertilized with 40 ton ha-1 solid cattle manure to improve the yield and quality. But if mineral content of forage is more important than yield and quality for the farmer, then it may be fertilized with 20 ton ha-1 solid cattle manure.
- MakaleYalnız künye2009Yields and qualities of some red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) genotypes in crop improvement systems as livestock feed
Tavlas, Ayten; Yolcu, Halil; Tan, Mustafa
The objective of this study was to compare twenty-five genotypes of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) in terms of yield (in 2000 - 2004) and quality performance (in 2000 - 2001) for animal feeding. The genotypes were evaluated for dry matter yield (DMY), crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), digestible dry matter (DDM), dry matter intake (DMI), relative feed value (RFV), total digestible nutrients (TDN), net energy-lactation (NEl), net energy-maintenance (NEm) and net energy-gain (NEg) content. There were significant differences in DMY (P < 0.01), CP, ADF, NDF, DDM, DMI, RFV (P < 0.05), TDN, NEl, NEm and NEg (P < 0.01) amongst the genotypes. The Rajah cultivar had the highest DMY (13629 kg ha-1) amongst the genotypes according to five year results. While the highest CP (15.94%), NDF (50.59%), DDM (68.68%), TDN (66.50%), NEl (0.70 Mcal/1b), NEm (0.76 Mcal/1b) and NEg (0.44 Mcal/1b) were determined in the L-818 line, the lowest ADF (25.96%) was also found in the L-818 line. The highest DMI (3.16%) was observed in the Hamua cultivar. The highest RFV was determined in the Tohum Islah ecotype (156), the Hamua (155), the Orbit (154) cultivars and the L-812 (154) line. Our results showed that there were large variations in terms of yield and quality performances amongst the red clover genotypes for animal feeding. The Rajah, L-832 (selected from wild forms) and Pawera had the highest yields amongst the genotypes. The L-818, L-812 lines (selected from wild forms), Tohum Islah ecotype, Lucrun and Redwent cultivars were superior in terms of forage quality properties (low in ADF and NDF and high CP, DDM, DMI, RFV, TDN, NEl, NEm, NEg) than the other red clover genotypes.

Yolcu, Halil; Serin, Yunus
Intercropping has been used widely in forage plant production all around the world. In intercropping systems, forage plants need different requirements are grown together. Requirement of fertilization and seeding pattern of intercropping differ from mono cropping. The research goals were to evaluate the effects of various seeding patterns and fertilization on the crude protein and chemical content of lucerne-smooth brome grass mixture under field conditions in 2002-2003. Lucerne and smooth bromegrass mixtures were established with different seeding patterns (mixed, alternative and cross-seeding), N fertilizer rates (0, 60 and 120 kg N ha-1) and P fertilizer rates (0, 40, 80 and 120 P2O5 ha-1). The results of this study indicated that different seeding patterns, N and P fertilization affected chemical contents of alfalfa and smooth brome grass mixture in the intercropping system. Depending on different seeding patterns, N, Ca, K and Mg content varied significantly, but no P content in the intercropping system. Nitrogen application increased N content and P application likewise increased P content. While P application increased N content, N application had no effect on the P content of the intercropping. Calcium and K did not vary significantly depending on N and P fertilization; yet, a relationship between P application and Mg content was determined.

Yolcu, Halil; Polat, Muazzez; Aksakal, Vecihi
Sole annual legumes, cereals and intercropping mixture of annual legumes and cereals are intensively cultivated in the world for forage production. An experiment was carried out to compare morphological, yield and quality parameters of sole Hungarian vetch (Vicia pannonica Crantz.), sole oat (Avena sativa L.), sole rye (Secale cereale L.), Hungarian vetch (Vicia pannonica Crantz.) + oat (Avena sativa L.), Hungarian vetch (Vicia pannonica Crantz.) + rye (Secale cereale L.), Hungarian vetch (Vicia pannonica Crantz.) + barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and Hungarian vetch (Vicia pannonica Crantz.) + wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) intercropping mixture in Kelkit Aydin Doǧan Vocational Training School at Gümüşhane University of Turkey in dry and manure conditions during 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 years. Sole rye and Hungarian vetch + rye intercropping mixture had the highest stem density. The highest cereal flag leaf lengths were in wheat in intercropping mixture, sole oat and oat in intercropping mixture. Rye in intercropping mixture and sole rye had the highest cereal length. The highest legume ratio was found in Hungarian vetch + oat intercropping mixture. Sole rye and Hungarian vetch + rye intercropping mixture had the highest fresh and hay yield. The highest crude protein yield was obtained in Hungarian vetch + oat intercropping mixture. Sole Hungarian vetch and Hungarian vetch + barley intercropping mixture had the highest crude protein content. The lowest acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents were gained in sole Hungarian vetch. Farmers in terms of yield may choose cultivation of sole rye and Hungarian vetch + rye intercropping mixture. Also in terms of quality, they may choose cultivation of sole Hungarian vetch and Hungarian vetch + oat intercropping mixture in dry and manure conditions.
