Garlic (Allium sativum) is a spice used for centuries for both condiment and medicinal purposes. Studies have shown that it has antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antimutagenic, antioxidant, antiallergic, anti-aging, antitumoral and immunostimulatory activities. Activation of caspase3 initiates the caspase activation chain, leading to apoptosis. In this study aimed to determine the apoptotic effect of DMSO-containing aged garlic extracts (AGE) on Myoid Cancer Cell lines (HL-60). Flow cytometry method and spectrophotometric caspase-3 activity analyzes were used using human lymphocyte cells as a control group. The highest apoptotic effect on HL-60 cell lines was observed in aged garlic extracts at a concentration of 12.5 mg/mL (10.9%). It was determined that caspase-3 activity in HL-60 cell lines increased by 1.28 to 3.02 times compared to lymphocyte cells. It was concluded that aged garlic extracts triggered apoptosis by increasing the activity of caspase-3 in HL-60 cell lines. It is thought that the aging of garlic has an anticancer effect and additional studies on this subject may bring new perspectives to cancer treatment.

Aim: Royal jelly is a bee product that secreted from glands of young worker bees and used resource of food for larvae and queen honeybee. Royal jelly which is very important for physiological development of queen honeybee and larvae, also used by people due to the nutritional properties and positive effects on health. Royal jelly contains water, lipid, protein, carbohydrate, amino acid, short peptide, vitamin, phenolic compounds, trace element and minerals. It was suggested that composition of royal jelly varies depending on the geographical structure of the zone, climate, flora that it is produced, storage condition and bees race. There are also publications which suggest that mineral content of royal jelly is independent of geographical structure and climate, but only varies depending on the harvesting time. There are not so many study related with chemical composition and biological properties of royal jelly that is produced in Turkey. In this study, it was aimed to determine some element levels in royal jelly samples that obtained from Bursa province, Mustafakemalpaşa district. Material and Methods: Element levels of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) (n=3). For each element, the results were exhibited as mean±standard deviation. Results: The amount of Cu was determined 3.25±0.05 mg/kg, the amount of Zn was 23.87±1.33 mg/kg, the amount of Mg was 794.33±38.44 mg/kg and the amount of Ca was 250.87±24.49 mg/kg in Bursa royal jelly. Conclusion: Element levels of Bursa royal jelly are at a level that can contribute to daily mineral requirement. However, there is a need for further in vivo studies on the availability of mineral additives and their therapeutic utility.

Effect of Turkish pollen and propolis extracts on caspase-3 activity in myeloid cancer cell lines

Uçar, Meltem; Değer, Orhan; Gerigelmez, Asuman Yiğit; Cengiz, Sevil; Barlak, Yaşam; Ovalı, Ercüment

Purpose: To investigate the apoptosis-inducing capacity of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) extracts of bee pollen and propolis in HL-60 Myeloid Cancer Cell Lines. Methods: DMSO extracts of pollen and propolis were incubated separately with HL-60 cells, and caspase-3 activity evaluated. In order to determine the cell cycle characteristics of HL-60 cells with and without extracts of pollen and propolis, the cells were analysed using flow cytometry. Results: The DMSO extract of propolis (0.5 mg/mL) increased apoptosis from undetectable levels to 60.1%, while maintaining cell viability. The DMSO extract of pollen (2 mg/ml) increased apoptosis from undetectable levels to 52.2% while decreasing cell viability by 62%. Caspase-3 activity in HL-60 cells incubated with DMSO extracts of pollen and propolis were 3.6-to 12-fold higher than in controls. Conclusion: Turkish pollen and propolis individually increase apoptosis and the activity of caspase-3 in HL-60 cells. This finding indicates that bee products may have beneficial effects in the treatment of cancer.
