Finite Modeling Updating Effects on the Dynamic Response of Building Models

    Günaydin, M.; Adanur, S.; Altunisik, A. C.; Sevim, B.; Bayraktar, A.

An improved finite element model was used to obtain more accurate modeling of engineering structures. The main goal of this paper was to determine how this improved modeling procedure affects the dynamic response of buildings based on experimental modal parameters such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios. For experimental assessment, three small, one-story, two-bay, reinforced concrete buildings with raft foundation were constructed under laboratory conditions. The initial three-dimensional finite element models, built with the ANSYS software, were used to analytically identify modal parameters, including natural frequencies and mode shapes. Following the analytical study, the ambient vibration tests were performed to obtain modal parameters, experimentally. The enhanced frequency domain decomposition method and the stochastic subspace identification method were used to identify the modal parameter. The analytical and experimental modal parameters were compared and then initial finite element models were updated to minimize the differences by changing of some uncertain parameters such as materials properties. With model updating, the maximum difference between the measured and initially obtained frequency was reduced from 28.47 to 4.88%. To show the model updating effect on dynamic response of building models, dynamic analysis with the experimental computed damping ratios and 5% damping ratio were carried out using 1992 Erzincan earthquake ground motion record. For the experimental damping ratios, the maximum differences in the displacements and stresses between the initial and updated models were obtained as 23 and 32%, respectively. These differences were calculated as 43 and 15 % for the 5 % damping ratio. Comparisons of dynamic analyses results for the initial and updated model show that the finite element model updating affects the dynamic response of the buildings considerably.

System identification of arch dam model strengthened with CFRP composite materials

    Altunisik, A.C.; Gunaydin, M.; Sevim, B.; Adanur, S.

This paper presents the structural identification of an arch dam model for the damaged, repaired and strengthened conditions under different water levels. For this aim, an arch dam-reservoir-foundation model has been constructed. Ambient vibration tests have been performed on the damaged, repaired and strengthened dam models for the empty reservoir (0 cm), 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm, 40 cm, 50 cm and full reservoir (60 cm) water levels to illustrate the effects of water levels on the dynamics characteristics. Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition Method in the frequency domain has been used to extract the dynamic characteristics. The dynamic characteristics obtained from the damaged, repaired and strengthened dam models show that the natural frequencies and damping ratios are considerably affected from the varying water level. The maximum differences between the frequencies for the empty and full reservoir are obtained as 16%, 33%, and 25% for damaged, repaired and strengthened model respectively. Mode shapes obtained from the all models are not affected by the increasing water level. Also, after the repairing and strengthening implementations, the natural frequencies of the arch dam model increase significantly. After strengthening, between 46-92% and 43-62% recovery in the frequencies are calculated for empty and full reservoir respectively. Apparently, after strengthening implementation, the mode shapes obtained are more acceptable and distinctive compared to those for the damaged model.

Static and dynamic responses of Halgavor footbridge using steel and FRP materials

    Gunaydin, M.; Adanur, S.; Altunisik, A.C.; Sevim, B.

In recent years, the use of fiber reinforced polymer composites has increased because of their unique features. They have been used widely in the aircraft and space industries, medical and sporting goods and automotive industries. Thanks to their beneficial and various advantages over traditional materials such as high strength, high rigidity, low weight, corrosion resistance, low maintenance cost, aesthetic appearance and easy demountable or moveable construction. In this paper, it is aimed to determine and compare the geometrically nonlinear static and dynamic analysis results of footbridges using steel and glass fiber reinforced polymer composite (GFRP) materials. For this purpose, Halgavor suspension footbridge is selected as numerical examples. The analyses are performed using three identical footbridges, first constructed from steel, second built only with GFRP material and third made of steel-GFRP material, under static and dynamic loadings using finite element method. In the finite element modeling and analyses, SAP2000 program is used. Geometric nonlinearities are taken into consideration in the analysis using P-Delta criterion. The numerical results have indicated that the responses of the three bridges are different and that the response values obtained for the GFRP composite bridge are quite less compared to the steel bridge. It is understood that GFRP material is more useful than the steel for the footbridges.

Seismic Performance Assessment of Masonry Tile Domes through Nonlinear Finite-Element Analysis

    Atamturktur, S.; Sevim, B.

This article discusses a combined analytical and experimental study on the nonlinear seismic performance of two Guastavino-style masonry domes located in the United States. The seismic performance of these masonry domes is simulated with nonlinear finite-element (FE) models. To support the assumptions and decisions established during the development of the FE models, the vibration response of the domes is measured on-site and systematically compared against the numerical model predictions. Linear FE models are developed that are in close agreement with the measured natural frequencies and in visual agreement with the measured mode shapes. Next, these linear models are extended into the nonlinear range by incorporating the Drucker-Prager damage criterion. Finally, nonlinear FE models are used to assess the performance of these two domes under seismic loadings obtained from the 1940 El Centro earthquake acceleration records. The predicted displacements and internal tensile stress levels are used to make inferences about the potential behavior of these two buildings under the selected earthquake load. Determination of water level effects on the dynamic characteristics of a prototype arch dam model using ambient vibration testing

    Sevim, B.; Bayraktar, A.; Altunişik, A.C.; Adanur, S.; Akköse, M.

This study investigated the water level effects on the dynamic characteristics of a prototype arch dam model using ambient vibration testing were investigated. Achievement of this purpose involved construction of a prototype arch dam-reservoir-foundation model under laboratory. The dam body was constructed with 60 cm height. Ambient vibration tests on the arch dam estimated its natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios for different water levels. In the ambient vibration tests, ambient excitations are provided from small impact effects and the responses of the arch dam are measured. It can be stated from the study that natural frequencies are not overly changed among 0-30 cm water levels; however they are increased for higher water levels. The difference between the first natural frequencies of the arch dam obtained from empty reservoir (H = 0 cm) and full reservoir (H = 60 cm) is about 20-25%.

Dynamic Characteristics of a Prototype Arch Dam

    Sevim, B.; Bayraktar, A.; Altunışık, A.C.; Adanur, S.; Akköse, M.

This study determines the dynamic characteristics of a prototype arch dam-reservoir-foundation system using Operational Modal Analysis method. Achievement of this purpose involved construction of a prototype arch dam-reservoir-foundation system under laboratory conditions. Ambient vibration tests on the arch dam model identified its natural frequencies, mode shapes, and damping ratios. Natural excitations such as small impact loads vibrated to arch dam. Sensitivity accelerometers which were placed on the dam's crest collected signals in measurements. Measurements were recorded for empty and full reservoirs. Operational Modal Analysis software processed signals which were collected from the ambient vibration tests. Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition technique estimated dynamic characteristics of the dam. Results showed that there was an approximate 20-25% difference between natural frequencies related to empty and full reservoirs.

Nonlinear earthquake behaviour of highway tunnels

    Sevim, B.

This paper describes the Arhavi Highway Tunnel which has two tubes, its geometrical properties, finite element model, and the nonlinear earthquake behaviour under a huge ground motion considering soil-structure interaction. The Arhavi Highway Tunnel is one of the tallest tunnels constructed in the Black Sea region of Turkey as part of the Coast Road Project. The tunnel has two tubes and each of them is about 1000 m tall. In the study, the modal analyses of the tunnel considering soil-structure interaction are performed and natural frequencies and mode shapes are obtained. Then, nonlinear transient analysis of the tunnel using Drucker-Prager criteria is performed applying acceleration components of 1992 Erzincan, Turkey earthquake's ground motion. In the time history analyses, Rayleigh damping coefficients are calculated using main natural frequency obtained from modal analysis. Element matrices are computed using the Gauss numerical integration technique. The Newmark method is used in the solution of the equation of motion. Because too much memory for the analyses is required, the first 7.5 s of the ground motions, which is the most effective duration, is taken into account in calculations. The displacement and stress results are observed to be the allowable level of the concrete material.

Ambient and forced vibration tests of a box girder concrete bridge model

    Altunisik, A.C.; Bayraktar, A.; Sevim, B.

In this paper, ambient and forced vibration tests of a box girder laboratory con-crete bridge model are described to obtain experimental dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios. The bridge deck consists of a main span of 3m and two side span of 1.5m each. The total bridge length is 6m and width of bridge is 0.60m. Heights of the bridge column and bridge deck are 0.80m and 0.30m, respectively. In the forced vibration tests, excitation of the bridge model is induced by an impact hammer. The ambient vibration tests are conducted under natural excitation such as wind and small impact effects. The Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition method in the frequency domain and the Sto-chastic Subspace Identification method in the time domain are used to extract the dynamic characteristics. At the end of the study, dynamic characteristics obtained from ambient and force vibration tests are compared with each other. It is seen that there is a good agreement be-tween both results and they are nearly closed to each other.

The effect of material properties on the seismic performance of Arch Dams

    Sevim, B.

The paper investigates the effect of material properties on the seismic performance of arch dam-reservoir-foundation interaction systems based on the Lagrangian approach using demand-capacity ratios. Type-5 arch dam is selected as a numerical application. The linear time history analyses of the arch dam-reservoir-foundation interaction system are carried out for different material properties. The foundation is taken into account as massless; behaviour of the reservoir is assumed to be linearly elastic, inviscid and irrotational. The north-south component of the Erzincan earthquake in 1992 is chosen as a ground motion. Dynamic equations of motions obtained from 3-D finite element modelling of the coupled system are solved by using the Newmark integration algorithm. The damage levels of the coupled system for the different material properties are demonstrated by using demand-capacity ratios and cumulative inelastic durations. The time histories and maximum values of the displacements and principal stresses, and performance curves, are obtained from linear analyses. It is clearly seen from the study that the different material properties affect the seismic behaviour of the dam.

Operational modal testing of an arch type steel highway bridge using SSI technique

    Altunişik, A.C.; Bayraktar, A.; Sevim, B.

The paper determines the dynamic characteristics of an arch type steel highway bridge applying ambient vibration testing. A modern steel highway bridge which has arch type structural system with 216m total length and located in the Ayvacik county of Samsun, Turkey is selected as an application. Because of the fact that the bridge connects the villages which are separated with Suat Ugurlu Dam Lake, it has a major logistical importance for this region. The construction of the bridge completed in 2009 and opened the traffic. The experimental meas-urements are carried out by ambient vibration tests under traffic loads. Vibration data are gath-ered from the bridge deck. Measurement time, frequency span and effective mode number are determined considering similar studies in the literature and initial finite element analysis re-sults. Stochastic Subspace Identification technique (SSI) in the time domain are used for the output only modal identification and dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios are determined, experimentally.
