Most plant parts are used in traditional food and medicine. Plants are significant resources of potential phytochemicals. This study investigated the properties of essential oil, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities of the flowers and leaves of the Celtis planchoniana plant. Based on the GC/MS-FID analysis of essential oils extracted from the flowers and leaves of C. planchoniana, 101 and 91 compounds were identified from their structures, respectively. Chemical classes with the highest percentage of compounds found in essential oils of plants were oil acids, with 31.51% in flowers, and aldehydes, with 32.89% in leaves. Hexadecanoic acid (29.94%) and (E)-2-hexenal (16.11%) compounds were determined as the main components in the plant’s flowers and leaves. Among the flower and leaf samples, the highest antioxidant levels were 132.77-80.10 mg AA eq./100 mL in TAC, 17.63-118.23 mg AA eq./100 mL in ABTS, 71.41-85.15 mg GA eq./100 mL in TPC, and 15.08-15.71 mg AA eq./100 mL in DPPH capacity. According to the TFC, TPC, ABTS, DPPH, and FRAP tests conducted to determine the antioxidant properties of C. planchoniana, the essential oil obtained from its leaves demonstrated more significant antioxidant properties than the essential oil obtained from its flowers. According to the antimicrobial activity analysis, the leaf and flower essential oil samples exhibited no antimicrobial activity against the microorganisms tested.
- MakaleYalnız künye2018Determination of certain properties of scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) wood which is impregnated with boron compounds and Quechua
Sen, Selim; Said Fidan, M.; Alkan, Elif; Sadiye Yaşar, S.
As the industrialisation and technological developments increase; the search for functional material which is environment-friendly, non-toxic, flame resistant, with a broad applicability and with high-temperature endurance also increases. Even though the wood material corresponds most of these features, its possession of an organic structure causes it to be affected negatively by damages occurring under proper conditions in the outdoor environment. Due to this reason, this study is conducted to prevent damages (biotic, abiotic pests, fire, etc.) caused by the environment to the wooden material, and to determine some physical and mechanical properties of wooden material impregnated with quechua, borax and boric acid, which are used to extend the usage life. Those features are needed in an outdoor environment. The Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) test specimens are prepared with borax, boric acid, borax+boric acid, from borax compounds, which have a great potential in Turkey, and with quechua, one of the natural impregnation substances. Then these samples are impregnated with three different (1%, 3%, 5%) solution concentrations according to ASTM 1413-76 standards and some physical-mechanical property changes are investigated. After impregnation, samples are tested and compared with control samples. According to the test results; the lowest oven dried density change is obtained in borax as 0.46 g . cm -3 in terms of boron compounds and the retention amount is determined to be highest with 3.83 kg.m -3 in the samples impregnated with boric acid. The bending strength and elastic modulus are found to be highest with 83.53 MPa and 10281 MPa in the samples impregnated with boric acid. When examined at the concentration level, it is determined to be highest with 81.89 MPa in samples with 3% concentration. There are statistical discrepancies with 55.77 MPa in the comprehensive strength parallel to grain in boric acid in terms of boron compounds.

Wooden material is one of the most commonly used construction materials since history of humanity due to its environment friendly and renewable natural source. This structure of wood material is also preferred because it is lightweight, easy to work, resistant to factors such as earthquake and fire, as compared to other used building materials. However, organic structure of the wooden material causes it to be affected negatively because of damages that might occur outdoors under inappropriate conditions. Due to this reason, in this study were investigated effects of various chemicals (impregnated and varnish type), used to prevent environmental damages (biotic, abiotic pests, fire etc.) on combustion resistance of the wood exposed to air conditions for a year. For this purpose, prepared Caucasian spruce (Picea orientalis L.) specimens were surface treated (synthetic and water-based varnish) after impregnated according to ASTM-D 1413-76 principles with various chemicals (Tanalith-E and Wolmanit-CB). Test specimens with impregnated, varnished and processless, were left in outdoor conditions for a year. Combustion experiment was conducted according to the principles in ASTM-E 160-50 combustion test standards. According to the results of the experiment, control and year specimens had close results in the weight loss. Weight loss was found be lower Wolmanit-CB impregnated specimens (92.12%) among the impregnated materials to synthetic varnish coated specimens (% 91.89) among the varnished specimens. It was determined that using Wolmanit-CB for impregnating and synthetic varnish for varnishing would be better according to the results. Furthermore, the amount of O2 (25.84 ppm) in control specimens in combustion with flame; the amounts of CO and CO2 (31787, 19.92 ppm respectively) in year specimens in combustion without flame and the amount of NO (54.65 ppm) in year specimens in glowing was observed to be the highest.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2015Chemical composition of oleoresin and larvae gallery resin of pinus brutia attacked by dioryctria sylvestrella ratz; [Kemijski sastav oleorezina i smole galerije ličinki sa stabla bora (pinus brutia) napadnutoga insektima dioryctria sylvestrella ratz]

Dioryctria sylvestrella Ratz. poses a remarkable hazard for the Pinus brutia Ten. in Turkey. In the current study, the larvae gallery resin of five trees and essential oils of resin, which was obtained with the AcidPaste Method, were analyzed using the Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) Method. Thirty nine compounds were found in larvae gallery resin, which were produced by Dioryctria sylvestrella Ratz, while thirty six compounds were extracted from oleoresin obtained by the Acid-Paste Method. The most common compounds of larvae gallery resin were α-pinene at a rate of 20.2%, β-caryophyllen at a rate of 10.8%, γ-terpinene at a rate of 10.1% and β-pinene at a rate of 9.4 percent. The most common compounds of oleoresin were α-pinene at a rate of 19.7%, β-pinene at a rate of 13.3%, γ-terpinene at a rate of 10.2% and β-caryophyllen at a rate of 7.8 percent. Also, the quantities of some compounds within larvae gallery resin such as β-pinene, limonene, and sylvestrene decreased compared to those of oleoresin, while the quantities of some compounds in oleoresin including α-longipinene, α-terpineol, and longifolene increased compared to that of larvae gallery resin. However, no qualitative difference was found.
