- MakaleYalnız künye2012Trace and rare earth elements as indicators of provenance and depositional environments of Lias cherts in Gumushane, NE Turkey
Eker, Cigdem Saydam; Sipahi, Ferkan; Kaygusuz, Abdullah
Trace elements and rare earth elements (REEs) of Lias-aged cherts in the Gumushane area were studied in order to understand their origin and depositional environment. Twenty three chert samples from five stratigraphic sections were analysed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and mineralogical investigation. Lias cherts in the study area are microcrystalline, cryptocrystalline quartz, and megaquartz depending on mineralogical content. Trace elements of the cherts were compared with PAAS, Co, Y, and Th had stronger depletions in the five sections, whereas V, Ni, Zr, Nb, and Hf had smaller depletions. The distribution of Zr, Hf, and Ta yields Zr/Hf, Zr/Ta and Hf/Ta ratios (25/645, 37/665, and 0.18/3, respectively) that differ from those of chondrites and average upper continental crust, suggesting that these elements are likely non-detrital but are sourced from seawater. Th/U ratios range from 0.04 to 0.45 and are lower than those of the upper continental crust (average: 3.9). Lias-aged cherts have low total REE abundances and stronger depletions in five sections of the PAAS and chondrite-normalised plots. The cherts are characterised by a positive Eu anomaly (average: 4.9) and LREE-enrichment (LaN/YbN=average: 3.5). In addition, about one-half of the cherts exhibit positive Ce anomaly (range: 0.25-2.58), chondritic Y/Ho values (range: 3.3-60), and low (La/Ce)N values (average: 1.8). REE and trace element abundance in Lias cherts indicate that these elements were likely derived from hydrothermal solutions, terrigenous sources, and seawater. The REE patterns of the cherts show that they were probably deposited close to a continental margin.
- MakaleYalnız künye2012Geochronological evidence and tectonic significance of Carboniferous magmatism in the southwest Trabzon area, eastern Pontides, Turkey
Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Arslan, Mehmet; Siebel, Wolfgang; Sipahi, Ferkan; Ilbeyli, Nurdane
The northern and southern zones of the eastern Pontides (northeast Turkey) contain numerous plutons of varying ages and compositions. Geochemical and isotopic results on two Hercynian granitoid bodies located in the northern zone of the eastern Pontides allow a proper reconstruction of their origin for the first time. The intrusive rocks comprise four distinct bodies, two of which we investigated in detail. Based on LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon dating, the Derinoba and Kayadibi granites have similar 206Pb/ 238U versus 207Pb/ 235U Concordia ages of 311.1 2.0 and 317.2 3.5 million years for the former and 303.8 1.5 million years for the latter. Aluminium saturation index values of both granites are between 0.95 and 1.35, indicating dominant peraluminous melt compositions. Both intrusions have high SiO 2 (74-77 wt.%) contents and show high-K calc-alkaline and I-to S-type characteristics. Primitive mantle-normalized element diagrams display enrichment in K, Rb, Th, and U, and depletion in Ba, Nb, Ta, Sr, P, and Ti. Chondrite-normalized rare earth element patterns are characterized by concave-upward shapes and pronounced negative Eu anomalies with L acn/Y bcn=4.6-9.7 and E ucn/Eu*=0.11-0.59 (Derinoba), and L acn/Y bcn=2.7-5.5 and E ucn/Eu*=0.31-0.37 (Kayadibi). These features imply crystal-melt fractionation of plagioclase and K-feldspar without significant involvement of garnet. The Derinoba samples have initial Nd values between-6.1 and-7.1 with Nd model ages and T DM between 1.56 and 2.15 thousand million years. The Kayadibi samples show higher initial Nd (I) values,-4.5 to-6.2, with Nd model ages between 1.50 and 1.72 thousand million years. This study demonstrates that the Sr isotope ratios generally display negative correlation with Nd isotopes; Sr isotope ratios were lowered in some samples by hydrothermal interaction or alteration. Isotopic and petrological data suggest that both granites were produced by the partial melting of early Palaeozoic lower crustal rocks, with minor contribution from the mantle. Collectively, these rocks represent a late stage of Hercynian magmatism in the eastern Pontides.

Major, trace element, K -Ar age and Sr-Nd isotopic data are presented for the Eocene Torul volcanics in the eastern Pontide orogenic belt (NE Turkey). The studied rocks are composed of basaltic andesitic, andesitic, trachyandesitic, and minor trachydacitic lavas associated with their pyroclastics. These rocks contain plagioclase (An2-44), hornblende (Mg#= 0.78-0.98), clinopyroxene (Wo43-46 En41-43 Fs10-15), biotite, quartz, and minor sanidine phenocrysts. K-Ar ages on hornblendes ages range from 43.99 (±2.59) to 33.45 (±2.32) Ma, within the Middle to Late Eocene. The volcanic rocks show calc-alkaline affinities and have medium to high K contents. They are enriched in large ion lithophile (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE), with pronounced depletion of high field strength elements (HFSE). The chondrite-normalized REE patterns (Lacn/Lucn= 4.0-9.8) show low to medium enrichment, indicating similar sources for the rock suite. Initial 87Sr/86Sr values vary between 0.70457 and 0.70511 and initial 143Nd/144Nd values between 0.51264 and 0.51278. The main solidification processes involved in the evolution of the volcanics consist of fractional crystallization with minor amounts of crustal contamination ± magma mixing. All evidence supports the conclusion that the parental magma(s) of the rocks probably derived from an enriched upper mantle, previously modified by subduction- induced metasomatism in a post-collisional geodynamic setting.
- MakaleYalnız künye2011Calc-alkaline I-type plutons in the eastern Pontides, NE Turkey: U-Pb zircon ages, geochemical and Sr-Nd isotopic compositions
Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Şen, Cüneyt
The Köprübaşi{dotless} intrusion from the eastern Pontides of NE Turkey consists of granodiorite and monzogranite, and contains a number of mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs). We report here U-Pb zircon age, geochemical and Sr-Nd isotopic data for these rocks in order to determining magma sources and magma production processes. On the basis of U-Pb zircon sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe dating (SHRIMP), the magma emplacement age of the granodiorite is 79.3±1.4Ma. The rocks of the pluton are calc-alkaline, metaluminous to peraluminous characteristics, and display features of I-type granites. They are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE) with negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*=0.60-0.76), but are depleted in high field strength elements (HFSE). They have small range of 87Sr/86Sr(i) (0.7067-0.7070) and e{open}Nd(i) (-3.2 to -4.4) values. Fractionation of plagioclase, hornblende and Fe-Ti oxides played an important role in the evolution of the Köprübaşi{dotless} intrusion. A relatively shallow intrusion depth (∼2-8km) was estimated from the Al-in-hornblende geobarometry. All these characteristics, combined with the low values of K2O/Na2O, SiO2, Al2O3/(FeOT+MgO+TiO2) and (Na2O+K2O)/(FeOT+MgO+TiO2), suggest an origin by dehydration melting from a metabasaltic lower crustal source.
- MakaleYalnız künye2011Petrogenesis of a Late Cretaceous composite pluton from the eastern Pontides: The Daǧbasi pluton, NE Turkey
Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Aydingakir, Emre
Zircon U-Pb ages, major and trace elements, and Sr-Nd isotope data are reported for the Late Cretaceous Dagbasi pluton from the eastern Pontides, NE Turkey. This pluton has calc-alkaline affinity and displays typical features of volcanic arc granitoids. It is a composite pluton consisting of tonalite, granodiorite, and monzogranite, all containing mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs). Based on U-Pb zircon SHRIMP dating, magma emplacement ages of the tonalite, granodiorite, and monzogranite are 88.1 ± 1.7 Ma, 86.0 ±2.0 Ma, and 82.9 ± 1.3 Ma, respectively. The tonalites have low SiO2 (60-64 wt%) and display metaluminous to peraluminous characteristics. They have similar Lacn/Lucn (1.5-7.3) and Eu/Eu* (0.65-0.88) values compared to granodiorites and monzogranites. The isotopic signatures of these rocks εNd(i) = -1.4 to -1.7; 87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.7056-0.7060) are largely similar to granodiorites and monzogranites. Samples from the granodiorites and monzogranites have SiO2 between 69 and 76 wt% and display peraluminous to slightly metaluminous characteristics. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns are characterized by moderate Lacn/Lucn ratios (1.6-7.1), with pronounced negative or positive Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.46-1.11). Radiogenic isotope signatures of granodiorites and monzogranites show overlapping 87Sr/86Sr(i), (0.7057-0.7067) and εNd(i) (-3.2 to + 1.5) values. The MMEs have similar geochemical and isotopic features as the host rocks. All plutonic rocks are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE) relative to high field strength elements (HFSE). Fractionation of plagioclase, hornblende, and Fe-Ti oxides played an important role in the evolution of Daǧbasi granitoids. All these geochemical and isotopic characteristics suggest an origin by dehydration melting of an amphibolitic lower crustal source.
- MakaleYalnız künye2010Insight into magma genesis at convergent plate margins a case study from the eastern Pontides (NE Turkey)
Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Siebel, Wolfgang; Ilbeyli, Nurdane; Arslan, Mehmet; Satir, Muharrem; Şen, Cüneyt
Convergent plate margins are the most intense areas of granitoid magmatism on Earth. The Eastern Pontide Magmatic Belt in NE Turkey represents a paleo-arc with numerous quartz diorite to syenite intrusions, ranging in age from 142 to 56 Ma and being composed of K-feldspar, plagioclase, quartz, pyroxene, hornblende, biotite, and Fe-Ti oxides. The granitoids exhibit low- to high-K calc-alkaline, metaluminous to slightly peraluminous I-type features and contain abundant mafic magmatic enclaves (MME). They are characteristically enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE) relative to high field strength elements (HFSE). Chondrite-normalized REE patterns are fractionated (LaN/LuN= 1.49-17.4) with pronounced negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.46-1.77). Initial 87SrZ86Sr values are between 0.7056 and 0.7079, and εNd(1) values between -5.3 and 1.6. Fractional crystallization, magma mixing/mingling and crustal contamination played an important role during magma evolution. All these characteristics, combined with the low values of K2O/Na2O, Mg-number, ASI and ratios Of Al 2O3/ (FeOT+MgO+TiO2) and (Na 2O+K2O)/(FeOT+MgO+TiO2), suggest an origin by dehydration melting of mafic (amphibolitic) or tonalitic lower crustal source rocks.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2009U-Pb SHRIMP zircon ages, geochemical and Sr-Nd isotopic compositions of the late cretaceous I-type Sariosman pluton, Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey
Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Chen, Bin; Aslan, Zafer; Siebel, Wolfgang; Şen, Cüneyt
The petrogenesis and U-Pb SHRIMP zircon ages of the Late Cretaceous Sariosman pluton in the Eastern Pontides is investigated by means of whole-rock Sr-Nd isotope data with field, petrographic and whole-rock geochemical studies. The bulk of the I-type Sariosman pluton consists of biotite-hornblende monzogranite, with minor quantities of porphyritic hornblende-biotite monzogranite. The biotite-hornblende monzogranite contains a number of mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) of quartz monzodiorite composition. U-Pb zircon sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe dating (SHRIMP) dates the magma emplacement age of the biotite-hornblende monzogranite at 82.7±1.5 Ma. The rocks of the pluton show high-K calc-alkaline, metaluminous to slightly peraluminous characteristics, and are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE) relative to high field strength elements (HFSE), thus displaying features of arc-related granitoids. Chondrite-normalised rare earth-element (REE) patterns have concave upward shapes (Lacn/Lucn= 10.1-17.4) with pronounced negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*= 0.61-0.80). Initial εNd values vary between -3.0 and -4.1 and initial 87Sr/86Sr values between 0.7062 and 0.707. The MMEs are characterised by higher Mg-numbers (27-29) and lower values of both SiO2 (56-58 wt%) and aluminium saturation index (0.9-1.0), compared to the monzogranites. Fractionation of plagioclase, hornblende and Fe-Ti oxides played an important role in the evolution of the Sariosman pluton. The crystallisation temperatures of the melts ranged from 700 to 800 °C and a relatively shallow intrusion depth (~2 to 7 km) is estimated from the Al-in-hornblende geobarometry. The geochemical and isotopic compositions of the Sariosman pluton suggest an origin through dehydration melting of mafic lower crustal source rocks.
- MakaleYalnız künye2009K/Ar ages and geochemistry of the post-collisional volcanic rocks in the Mica (Erzurum) area, eastern Turkey
Kaygusuz, Abdullah
The Neogene Ilica volcanics in eastern Anatolia are of sub-alkaline affinity and present features of post-collisional volcanism. The lava flows in the Ilica area reveal K/Ar ages ranging from 13.9 ± 0.5 to 4.4 ± 0.3 Ma, corresponding to the Miocene- and Pliocene age. The volcanic rocks are composed of calc-alkaline basaltic trachyandesitic-, trachyandesitic-, andesitic- and minor dacitic lavas associated with pyroclastics, with the andesitic lavas being volumetrically the most abundant. Some special textures, such as the dissolution/melting and poikilitic type, and the normal, reverse, and oscillatory zoning in the plagioclase- and pyroxene phenocrysts are attributable to disequilibrium crystallization related to magma mixing. The rocks are characterized by enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE), with pronounced depletion of high field strength elements (HFSE). They show depletion in Nb and Ta, indicating the role of crustal contamination. The rocks also have moderately fractionated rare earth elements (REE) patterns with (La/Lu)N ratios of 10-19 for andesitic- and dacitic rocks, and 7-10 for basaltic trachyandesitic- and trachyandesitic rocks. Basaltic trachyandesites show slightly positive Eu anomalies, whereas the deepening of Eu through gradual increase from trachyandesite to dacite, indicating a genetic link between the basaltic trachyandesite and the dacites. The main solidification processes consist of magma mixing and fractional crystallization with minor amounts of crustal contamination which were operative during the solidification of the volcanic rocks. All evidences support the theory that Ilica volcanic rocks were derived from partial melting of lower continental crust, having undergone interaction with subcontinental lithospheric mantle in a post-collisional geodynamic setting.
- MakaleYalnız künye2009Mineralogy, whole-rock and Sr-Nd isotope geochemistry of mafic microgranular enclaves in Cretaceous Dagbasi granitoids, Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey: Evidence of magma mixing, mingling and chemical equilibration
Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Aydinçakir, Emre
Rocks of the Late Cretaceous Dagbasi Pluton (88-83 Ma), located in the eastern Pontides, include mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) ranging from a few centimetres to metres in size, and from ellipsoidal to ovoid in shape. The MMEs are composed of gabbroic diorite, diorite and tonalite, whereas the felsic host rocks comprise mainly tonalite, granodiorite and monzogranite based on both mineralogical and chemical compositions. MMEs are characterized by a fine-grained, equigranular and hypidiomorphic texture. The common texture of felsic host rocks is equigranular and also reveals some special types of microscopic textures, e.g., oscillatory-zoned plagioclase, poikilitic K-feldspar, small lath-shaped plagioclase in large plagioclase, blade-shaped biotite, acicular apatite, spike zones in plagioclase and spongy-cellular plagioclase textures and rounded plagioclase megacrysts in MMEs. Compositions of plagioclases (An33-An60), hornblendes (Mg#=0.77-1.0) and biotites (Mg#=0.61-0.63) of MMEs are slightly distinct or similar to those of host rocks (An12-57; hbl Mg#=0.63-1.0; Bi Mg#=0.50-0.69), which suggest partial to complete equilibration during mafic-felsic magma interactions. The felsic host rocks have SiO2 between 60 and 76 wt% and display low to slightly medium-K tholeiitic to calc-alkaline and peraluminous to slightly metaluminous characteristics. Chondrite-normalized rare-earth element (REE) patterns are fractionated (Lacn/Lucn=1.5-7.3) with pronounced negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*=0.46-1.1). Initial εNd(i) values vary between -3.1 and 1.6, initial 87Sr/86Sr values between 0.7056 and 0.7067. Compared with the host rocks, the MMEs are characterized by relatively high Mg-number of 22-52, low contents of SiO2 (53-63 wt%), low ASI (0.7-1.1) and low to medium-K tholeiitic to calc-alkaline, metaluminous to peraluminous composition. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns are relatively flat [(La/Yb)cn=1.4-3.9; (Tb/Yb)cn=0.9-1.5] and show small negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*=0.63-1.01). Isotope signatures of these rocks (87Sr/86Sr(i)=0.7054-0.7055; εNd(i)=-1.0 to 1.9) are largely similar to the host rocks. Gabbroic diorite enclaves have relatively low contents of SiO2, ASI; high Mg#, CaO, Al2O3, TiO2, P2O5, Sr and Nb concentrations compared to dioritic and tonalitic enclaves. The geochemical and isotopic similarities between the MMEs and their host rocks indicate that the enclaves are of mixed origin and are most probably formed by the interaction between the lower crust- and mantle-derived magmas. All the geochemical data suggest that a basic magma derived from an enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle, interacted with a crustal melt that originated from dehydration melting of the mafic lower crust at deep crustal levels. The existence of compositional and textural disequilibrium and the nature of chemical and isotopic variation in these rock types indicate that magma mixing/mingling between an evolved mafic and a granitic magma was involved in their genesis. Microgranular enclaves are thus interpreted to be globules of a more mafic magma probably from an enriched lithospheric mantle source. Al-in-amphibole estimates the pluton emplacement at ca. 0.3-3.8 kbar, and therefore, magma mixing and mingling must have occurred at 3.8 kbar or below this level.

Bilgen, Selcuk; Keles, Sedat; Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Sari, Ahmet; Kaygusuz, Kamil
Renewable energy sources have been important for humans since the beginning of civilization. For centuries and in many ways, biomass has been used for heating and cooking. Many centuries ago mankind was already utilizing the clearly visible power of water for mechanical drive purposes, as was also the case with wind. On the other hand, Turkey, with its young population and growing energy demand per person, its fast growing urbanization, and its economic development, has been one of the fast growing power markets of the world for the last two decades. It is expected that the demand for electric energy in Turkey will be 300 billion kWh by the year 2010 and 580 billion kWh by the year 2020. Turkey is heavily dependent on expensive imported energy resources that place a big burden on the economy and air pollution is becoming a great environmental concern in the country. In this regard, renewable energy resources appear to be the one of the most efficient and effective solutions for clean and sustainable energy development in Turkey. Turkey's geographical location has several advantages for extensive use of most of these renewable energy sources. This article presents a review of the potential and utilization of the renewable energy sources in Turkey. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008Petrochemistry and petrology of I-type granitoids in an arc setting: The composite Torul pluton, Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey
Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Siebel, Wolfgang; Şen, Cüneyt; Satir, Muharrem
The Upper Cretaceous Torul pluton, located in the Eastern Pontides, is of sub-alkaline affinity and displays features typical of volcanic arc granitoids. It is a composite pluton consisting of granodiorite, biotite hornblende monzogranite, quartz monzodiorite, quartz monzonite and hornblende biotite monzogranite. The oldest syenogranite (77.9 ± 0.3 Ma) and the youngest quartz diorite form small stocks within the pluton. Samples from the granodiorites, biotite hornblende monzogranites, quartz monzodiorites, quartz monzonites and hornblende biotite monzogranites have SiO2 between 57 and 68 wt% and display high-K calc-alkaline, metaluminous to peraluminous characteristics. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns are fractionated Lacn/Lucn = 6.0-14.2) with pronounced negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.59-0.84). Initial εNd(i) values vary between -3.1 and -4.1, initial 87Sr/86 Sr values between 0.7058 and 0.7072, and δ18O values between +4.4 and +7.3‰. The quartz diorites are characterized by relatively high Mg-number of 36-38, low contents of Na2O (2.3-2.5 wt%) and SiO2 (52-55 wt%) and medium-K calc-alkaline, metaluminous composition. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns are relatively flat [(La/Yb)cn = 2.8-3.3; (Tb/Yb)cn = 1.2] and show small negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*= 0.74-0.76). Compared to the other rock types, radiogenic isotope signatures of the quartz diorites show higher 87Sr/ 86Sr (0.7075-0.7079) and lower εNd(i) (-4.5 to -5.3). The syenogranites have high SiO2 (70-74 wt%) and display high-K calc-alkaline, peraluminous characteristics. Their REE patterns are characterized by higher Lacn/Lucn (12.9) and Eu/Eu* (0.76-0.77) values compared to the quartz diorites. Isotopic signatures of these rocks [εNd(i) = -4.0 to -3.3; 87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.7034-0.7060; δ18 O = + 4.9 to + 8.2] are largely similar to the other rock types but differ from that of the quartz diorites. Fractionation of plagioclase, hornblende, pyroxene and Fe'Ti oxides played an important role in the evolution of Torul granitoids. The crystallization temperatures of the melts ranged from 800 to 900°C as determined from zircon and apatite saturation thermometry. All these characteristics, combined with low K2 O/Na2O, low Al2O3/(FeOT + MgO + TiO2), and low (Na2O + K2O)/ (FeOT + MgO + TiO2) ratios suggest an origin through dehydration melting of mafic lower crustal source rocks.

As a consequence of the fast-growing energy requirements and the increasing use of low-grade domestic fuels, air pollution has increased considerably in recent years in Turkey. Since the energy demand is projected to continue to increase rapidly in the future also, energy-supply strategies are required to control air-pollutant emissions in a cost-efficient way, taking into account the legal emission-control regulations that have been enforced. This article extensively concentrates on energy and environmental impacts in Turkey only. Energy utilization and its major environmental impacts are discussed from the standpoint of sustainable development, including anticipated patterns of future energy use and subsequent environmental issues. Several aspects relating to energy utilization, renewable energy, energy efficiency, environment, and sustainable development are examined from both current and future perspectives in the country. In this study, air-pollutant emissions due to power generation and their harmful effects on the environment are also estimated.
- MakaleYalnız künye2002Geothermal energy: Power for a sustainable future

This paper discusses the potential and utilization of geothermal energy in Turkey. Geothermal energy for electricity generation has been produced commercially since 1913, and for 4 decades on the scale of hundreds of MW both for electricity generation and direct use. Utilization has increased rapidly during the last 3 decades. In 2000, geothermal resources were identified in over 80 countries, and there are quantified records of geothermal utilization in 58 countries in the world. The worldwide use of geothermal energy amounts to 49 TWh/y of electricity and 53 TWh/y for direct use. On the other hand, Turkey is one of the countries with significant potential in geothermal energy. Resource assessments have been made many times by the Mineral Research and Exploration Directorate (MTA) of Turkey. The main uses of geothermal energy are mostly moderate and low temperature applications such as space heating and domestic hot water supply, greenhouse heating, industrial processes, heat pumps, and electricity generation. The data accumulated since 1962 show that the estimated geothermal power and direct use potential are about 4500 MWe and 31500 MWt, respectively. Present applications have shown that geothermal energy in Turkey and other countries is clean and much cheaper compared to the other fossil and renewable energy sources.
