Approximately 60% of the casualties due to disasters occur due to earthquakes. This study aimed to discover and develop the strengths and weaknesses of a group of university students during a possible earthquake, their behavior towards evacuation and assembly areas, and their adaptation to the emergency disaster plan. The research was carried out between May–June 2022 as “liberating/developing/critical action research,” a subtype of action research, one of the qualitative research methods. Thirty-five students participated in the first drill, and 31 participated in the second. The study data were collected through “observations” made with the installed cameras and “focus group interviews” with the students through semi-structured interview forms. An average of 3.25 behaviors expected to be observed were displayed as expected by the students during the first drill. The average of the behaviors displayed during the second drill increased to 5.18. As a result of the synthesis of the qualitative data obtained from the focus group interviews, it was seen that two main themes were formed: “Drill management” and “Disaster experience.” The main theme of drill management was “Drill moment,” “Evacuation moment,” and “Drill experience” analytical themes. In contrast, the main theme of disaster experience was “Disaster cycle,” “Disaster perception,” “Disaster awareness,” and “Earthquake experience.” After the second drill, it was evaluated that the problems identified in the first were eliminated. The students' adaptation to the emergency disaster plan increased by re-applying to the observation and focus group interviews.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Determining Levels of Search and Rescue Team’s Knowledge on Avalanche Search and Rescue

Avalanches kill more than 150 people every year, although no one knows the exact figure. Additionally, the mortality rate in avalanche incidents may reach up to 70% due to factors such as the lack of knowledge, experience, and organization of search and rescue personnel. This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the awareness on avalanche and the level of knowledge on search and rescue among personnel who respond to avalanche incidents and participate in search and rescue activities. The sample consisted of 304 individuals who agreed to participate in the study between June and July 2021. Data were collected using an information form on socio-demographic characteristics and a survey prepared by the researchers upon the relevant literature review. It was found that while 65.8% of the participants were female, 34.2% were male. Their mean age was 29.69±8.50 years. The rate of those participating in search and rescue activities in case of a disaster was 44.1 %. The participants had a moderate level of knowledge on avalanche search and rescue as well as on-site medical management of avalanche victims. Those who participated in search and rescue activities in case of a disaster had a higher level of knowledge on avalanche search and rescue than those who did not. Those who were trained on avalanche search and rescue (preparedness, response) had higher levels of knowledge on avalanche search and rescue and on-site medical management of avalanche victims when compared to those who were not. As a consequence, it was determined that participation in search and rescue activities in a disaster increased the personnel’s level knowledge. Also, the related training elevated the levels of knowledge on both avalanche search and rescue and on-site medical management of avalanche victims.

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the knowledge and attitudes about organ donation of college students studying in health-related sections. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between 15 April - 15 May 2015. The sample of the study consisted of 764 students. Students are selected by simple random sampling and the students who agreed to participate were included in the sample. Data of the study were collected using socio-demographic information form and questionnaire about knowledge and attitudes of organ donation prepared by the researchers in line with the literature. Results: The mean age of the students was 20.66 ± 1.73 and then 43.84% of male and 56.16's% of female. The study showed that only 2.4% of the students donated organs. 38.7% of students stated that while seeking an organ donor, 24% of students reported that they did not want to donate their organs. There were seen that 56.5% of students received information about organ donation before. Conclusion: The knowledge level of the students were found to be good. In line with these findings, it is thought that health care professionals of the future should be supported to change their attitudes about organ ties
