Cultural adaptation and psychometric validation of the Azerbaijani version of the Optimism Scale among university students

    Güngör, Sunay; Karimi, Kambiz

In a dynamic society, instilling a sense of positive attitudes is crucial. Yılmaz and Balcı's (2002) The Optimism Scale was translated into Azerbaijani and its construct validity and reliability were tested using a convenience sample of university students (n = 300, 18–24 years). cities. The sample was split for exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Findings showed cultural commonalities between Azerbaijani and Turkish societies, attested through shared factors such as religion and language. The scale showed high construct validity, high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha =.869; McDonald's omega =.867), and convergent validity (r =.41 with measures of happiness). It supports usability of the scale in Azerbaijan. Future studies should explore structural characteristics of the scale among different populations and age brackets.

Measuring Dysfunctional Grief due to a COVID-19 Loss: A Kurdish Validation Study of the Pandemic Grief Scale

Karimi, Kambiz; Yaghoobi, Abolghasem; Gungor, Sunay; Karimi, Afagh; Sohrabi, Saeed

Millions of people are grieving the loss of someone who died of COVID-19. The current study aims to validate a Kurdish version of the Pandemic Grief Scale which is a brief English-language mental health screener to identify cases of dysfunctional grief associated with a COVID-19 death. We recruited 501 participants. Participants completed the PGS, WSAS, PHQ-9, and Optimism scales. The factor structure, reliability, and validity of the PGS were analyzed. Using exploratory factor analysis (N1 = 300), we derived an one-factor structure. In confirmatory factor analysis (N2 = 201), the one-factor model showed good to excellent fitness. The PGS was positively correlated with PHQ-4, and WSAS and negatively correlated with optimism. The scale was internally consistent with a Cronbach's alpha of .79. These results support that the Kurdish version of the PGS is a valid and reliable assessment to assess the severity of dysfunctional grief associated with a COVID-19 death.

Psychometric validation of the Persian version of Philanthropy Scale in university students

Güngör, Sunay; Ersanli, Ercumend; Karimi, Kambiz; Öztürk, Mesut

In this study, we culturally adapted the Philanthropy Scale for Iranian university students, assessing its validity and reliability. Our sample included 600 students from Tehran and Tabriz universities. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) validated the three-factor model, demonstrating excellent fit values. Internal consistency, measured by Cronbach's Alpha, was alpha = .838 for the total score. Sub-dimensions had values of alpha = .812 (not being self-seeking and being sincere), alpha = .745 (love and unconditional acceptance), and alpha = .689 (honesty). Spearman-Brown correlation coefficients, assessed via the split-half method, were r = .825 for the total score, r = .757 (not being self-seeking and being sincere), r = .705 (love and unconditional acceptance), and r = .769 (honesty). These results signify robust reliability.

Right now, more than ever in our lives, we need to remain optimistic. The present study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of The Optimism Scale, developed by Balcı & Yılmaz (2002), among Iranian university students and to adapt to Iranian culture. The scale is a single-factor scale with 24 items. The participants were selected using an appropriate sampling method, and the sample consisted of 600 Iranian university students (360 females and 240 males) from Tehran and Tabriz cities. Participants’ age ranged from 18 to 24 years (M = 21.58, SD = 1.75). The study findings suggested similarities between Iran and Turkey culture (e.g., religion, language, neighborhood relations). The optimism scale revealed a good construct validity in the Goodness of fit index indicators. The Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficient for the scale was 0.76 and Convergent validity with happiness was 0.38. In future studies, the scale’s factor structure can be investigated in different samples, such as adolescents and adults.
