The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidant-antioxidant balance in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). Forty-two consecutive patients with AAA and 46 control subjects were included. Total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS) levels were measured and the oxidative stress index (OSI) value determined. Serum TOS and OSI values in patients with AAA were higher than those in the controls (p<0.001, p<0.001, respectively). There was a positive correlation between abdominal aortic diameters, serum TOS levels (r=0.592, p<0.001) and OSI values (r=0.598, p<0.001). A cut-off value of 17.68 μmol H2O2 equivalent/L for TOS was associated with 86% sensitivity and 83% specificity and a cut-off value of 1.77 for OSI was associated with 86% sensitivity and 81% specificity for predicting AAA. Systemic oxidative imbalance develops in patients with AAA, particularly as a result of an increase in TOS.

Background: This study aims to evaluate the potential ofischemia-modified albumin (IMA) to predict the myocardialinfarction in on pump coronary artery bypass grafting(ONCABG) patients. Methods: Fifty elective isolated ONCABG patients (41 males,9 females; mean age 66 years; range 56 to 75 years) were includedin the study. Patients were divided into perioperative myocardialinfarction (PMI; n=8) and non-infarction (NPMI; n=42) groupsaccording to perioperative cardiac troponin I (cTnI) values andECG findings. Serum IMA levels were measured preoperatively,20 minutes after aortic cross clamping, 30 minutes, at 3, 6,12 and 24 hours after declamping. Results: Compared to the NPMI group, the declamping 30minutes, 3, 6 and 12 hours IMA levels were higher in the PMIgroup (p=0.002, p=0.048, p=0.023, p=0.007, respectively). Inboth NPMI and PMI groups, the 20 minutes after aortic crossclamping IMA levels were higher compared to the preoperativeIMA levels (p=0.0001, p=0.038, respectively). Conclusion: Our study results show that IMA may be anearly marker of myocardial infarction in the ONCABGpatients.

Doğan, Orhan Veli; Menteşe, Ümit; Doğan, Süheyla; Usta, Sefer; Turan, İbrahim; Haliloğlu, Ergün; Karahan, Süleyman Caner

Background/aim: To investigate the differences in perioperative oxidative stress (OS) in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) patients treated with either endovascular repair (EVAR) or open repair (OR).; Materials and methods: Twenty patients (11 OR, 9 EVAR) treated for AAA with no known malignant or inflammatory disease and an aneurysm diameter of over 5 cm and no rupture were included in the study. Blood samples were obtained preoperatively, during aortic occlusion, and 1 h and 24 h after reperfusion. Total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidative stress (TOS), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured and oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated.; Results: OSI at 1 h and 24 h after reperfusion was higher in the EVAR group (P = 0.004 and P = 0.002, respectively). TAS levels were higher (P = 0.001, P = 0,029). MDA levels showed no difference (P = 0.291, P = 0.076). TOS levels were lower 24 h after reperfusion in the EVAR group (P = 0.018). Conclusion: Markers of oxidative stress were lower in the EVAR group. This may be associated with advantages of EVAR. More studies are required for a clear-cut conclusion.

Serum anti-carbonic anhydrase I and II antibodies and polycystic ovary syndrome; [Serum anti-karbonik anhidraz I ve II antikorları ve polikistik over sendromu]

Menteşe, Ahmet; Güven, Süleyman; Sümer, Ayşegül; Turan, Ibrahim; Demir, Selim; Karahan, Süleyman Caner; Alver, Ahmet

Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate anti-carbonic anhydrase antibodies (anti-CA I and CA II antibodies) in the sera of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Methods: In this study serum anti-CA I and II antibody levels of age and BMI matching fifty women with PCOS and fifty women without PCOS on day three of menstrual cycle were assessed with an ELISA method previously developed by Hosoda and modified by Alver et al. Results: The mean serum anti-CA I antibody levels were significantly higher in women with PCOS and anti-CA II antibody levels were not significantly different in women with PCOS compared with control subjects. For serum anti-CA I antibody, the absorbance higher than 0.484 (mean + 3SD of control subjects) was taken as positive, Anti-CA I antibody was detected in 13 of 50 patients with PCOS (26%). Considering serum anti-CA II antibody, the absorbance higher than 0.654 (mean + 3SD of control subjects) was taken as positive. Anti--CA II antibody was detected in 2 of 50 patients with PCOS (4%). All patients with positive anti-CA II antibody also had positive anti-CA I antibody. Autoantibodies specifically reactive to CA I were found to be present at a higher frequency than CA II in the serum of subjects with PCOS in the present study. Conclusion: The results may suggest that autoimmune responses against CA I may be involved in the pathogenesis of PCOS.
