Future Expectations of Occupational Health and Safety Students: An Analysis Based on Educational and Socioeconomic Variables

    Tuna, Hasan; Kaplan, Ahmet

This study examines the future expectations of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) students regarding socioeconomic determinants and the emerging digital competency gap. The sample comprises 359 students selected through convenience sampling using the "Future Expectation Scale." Results indicate students possess moderate future expectations (x̄=2.66); while career optimism is high (x̄=3.93), economic and social outlooks are significantly lower. Notably, students from foundation universities and industrially active regions exhibit significantly higher expectations. These disparities highlight a critical gap in accessing practical training resources. Consequently, the study concludes that traditional educational methods are insufficient to meet modern industry demands. Integrating immersive technologies, such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), into OHS curricula is essential to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and Industry 5.0 requirements, enhancing student motivation and career readiness.

Fatal Occupational Accidents in Turkey from a City and Country Perpective

    Ceylan, Hüseyin; Kaplan, Ahmet

Occupational accidents and death cases resulting from occupational accidents are among the most critical factors threatening work peace. Occupational accidents cause injury, disability and even death for many employees. In 2021, 1394 employees died due to occupational accidents in Turkey, while 3123 became permanently incapacitated, that is, disabled for life. In addition, tens of thousands of employees were injured in occupational accidents, resulting in temporary incapacitation and exposing them and their families to emotional distress. The fact that occupational accidents are preventable events to a large extent makes the incidents caused by occupational accidents, such as death, loss of limb, and severe injury due to occupational accidents, even more tragic. Especially multiple-fatality occupational accidents are accepted as an indicator of the importance countries place on human life. Human life is above any economic value. Turkey is the country with the worst performance in Europe in terms of fatal occupational accident incidence rates. For all these reasons, in this study, fatal occupational accidents in Turkey in 2012-2022 were analyzed with the Health and Safety Labour Watch-Turkey (HESA Labour Watch) data. In addition, Social Security Institution (SSI) data for 2012-2021 was compared with the HESA Labour Watch data, and it was examined whether fatal occupational accidents were officially recorded. Finally, using official SSI data, Turkey and EU-27 countries were compared regarding the number of death cases resulting from occupational accidents and fatal occupational accident incidence rates. The study revealed the following results; Some of the fatal occupational accidents cannot be recorded in Turkey, After the OSH law, the number of death cases as a result of occupational accidents increased, compared to the EU-27 countries, Turkey has the worst performance in terms of both the number of death cases as a result of occupational accidents and the fatal accidents incidence rate.

Algılanan COVID-19 Tehdidinin Hekimlerin Psikolojik Kırılganlıklarına Etkisi

Tuna, Hasan; Melike, Yağcı; Kaplan, Ahmet

Pandemi dönemlerinde sağlık çalışanları ruhsal sağlık problemleri ile yüzleşmektedir. Bu kapsamda araştırma, pandemi sürecindeki COVID-19 salgını tehdidinin hekimlerin psikolojik kırılganlık düzeylerine olan etkilerini incelemek amacıyla tanımlayıcı ve ilişki arayıcı tipte planlanmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini uygun örnekleme yoluyla seçilen 235 hekim oluşturmuştur. Veri toplama aracı olarak “Psikolojik Kırılganlık Ölçeği” ve “Algılanan COVID-19 Tehdidi Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır. Verilerin analizinde bağımsız gruplar t testi, One-Way ANOVA testi, Pearson momentler çarpım korelasyon ve çoklu doğrusal regresyon analizleri kullanılmıştır. Yapılan korelasyon analizi sonucunda Pandemi sürecindeki hekimlerin algıladıkları COVID-19 tehdidi ile psikolojik kırılganlıkları arasında pozitif yönlü anlamlı bir ilişki tespit edilmiştir.

High-Risky Sectors in Terms of Work Accidents in Turkey

Ceylan, Hüseyin; Kaplan, Ahmet; Bekar, Murat

Work accidents are serious issues that disrupt harmonious environment in workplace. They cause not only death, injury or disability of employees, but also serious financial loss for businesses and countries. Work accidents are highly preventable incidents, when necessary, precautions are taken. Like the whole world, in Turkey also there are risky sectors where work accidents are intensified. The identification of risky sectors in Turkey, is the first step of being able to fight against work accidents in this sector. Therefore, in this study the riskiest sectors in Turkey were investigated basing on the official accident data from the last ten years. Thus, first of all, the sectoral distribution of work accidents, death and permanent incapacity cases that occurred in Turkey in 2010-2019 was examined. Sectors were evaluated in terms of six different parameters: the number of work accidents, the number of deaths because of work accidents, the number of permanent incapacities because of work accidents, general accident incidence rate, fatal accident incidence rate, and permanent incapacity accident incidence rate. The top ten sectors with intensity have been determined for each parameter. Then, all these data were combined and the ten most risky sectors in Turkey in terms of work accidents were defined. In the last 10 years, the sector of "41-Building Construction" has been found to be the riskiest sector in Turkey, where the most work accidents have occurred, the most employees die and the most employees are permanently disabled. On the other hand, the "05- Mining of Coal and Lignite" sector, in which the general accident incidence rate, fatal accident incidence rate, and permanent incapacity accident incidence rate values are the highest, was the second most risky sector.
