Producing Geographical Indication Products from the Farmers' Perspective: Kelkit Dry Beans

    Adanacioglu, Hakan; Doğan, Nilgün

A locally sourced, high-quality food supply is seen as both viable and desirable. Geographical indications (GIs) help consumers identify products linked to specific regions, creating intellectual property rights that strengthen rural economies and support sustainable agriculture. Despite this potential, adoption among smallholders remains limited, and its effectiveness depends heavily on farmers’ experiences, perceptions, and motivations. This study examines the production and marketing of GI products from the perspective of farmers, focusing on Kelkit Dry Beans, a geographically indicated product in Türkiye. Primary data were collected in 2021 through face-to-face interviews with 100 dry bean farmers in the Kelkit, Şiran, and Köse districts of Gümüşhane province—50 using GI-registered seeds and 50 not. Findings indicate that farmers adopting GI production expected higher prices based on quality improvements but were unable to achieve these outcomes. Access to alternative markets did not improve, and buyer-related problems persisted. Compared to non-GI farmers, those producing GI beans attached greater importance to factors such as easier marketing, higher expected prices, financial support from unions, and the assurance of long-term demand from contract buyers. Nevertheless, their largely negative experiences - particularly unmet price expectations and limited market access—undermine confidence in GI production and discourage wider adoption. In conclusion, while GIs offer opportunities for rural development, competitiveness, and sustainability, their broader adoption requires addressing farmers’ concerns regarding profitability, reliable markets, and institutional support. Without such improvements, the potential benefits of GIs are unlikely to be fully realized.

A General Assessment of the Retail Price Premiums of Organic Food Products in Türkiye

    Adanacioglu, Hakan; Doğan, Nilgün

Organic agricultural production has emerged as an alternative to conventional production and aims to promote a sustainable production approach based on the health of soil, the protection of nature and human well-being factors with an environmentally friendly production method. Organic production combines traditional knowledge with scientific innovation to benefit the natural environment and promote a higher quality of life for all. Organic agricultural products, which have gained significant market share globally and expanded into various markets, are mainly produced for export in Türkiye. The growth of the organic market depends on the balance between supply and demand. In this respect, the aim of this study is to examine the product market prices, which is a key factor affecting the purchasing behaviour of consumers in order to grow the organic market and reach the desired level. Price premiums were examined for the following food groups: cereals/legumes, fruit, vegetables, milk, dairy products and eggs, dried fruit and nuts. This study relies on secondary data and retail prices were collected through online websites. According to the results, the price premium, which was calculated by comparing the prices of organic and conventional versions of selected food products, was found to be in favour of organic products. This price premium was found to be particularly high for noodles, dry beans, buckwheat and rice from the cereals/legumes group; grapefruit, apple and pear from the fruit group and yellow chickpeas, pumpkin seeds from the nuts group. These results provide useful insights for food producers, marketers and policy makers when making decisions about organic food.

Traditional and Geographical Indication Labelled Dry Beans Prices Received By Farmers: An Evaluation According to Product Quality and Spatial Properties

    Adanacioglu, Hakan; Doğan, Nilgün

It has become common to increase the market power of commodities by protecting the features of the products specific to the region with the GI label. There are many gastronomic products registered with GI in the province of Gümüşhane and one of them is Kelkit Dry Beans, which was registered by the Turkish Patent Institute (TPE) in 2020. This seedis registered with its white colour and pink spots on it, with its distinctive features compared to other dry bean seeds. In recent years, local farmers have been producing with impure dry bean seeds, which they obtained from the surrounding regions and have higher yield characteristics, the dried beans produced with this seed differ from the beans produced with the local seed with its pinkish coloration and elliptical grain feature. In order to turn the product value of Kelkit Dry Beans produced with local seeds into an advantage, examining the prices received by the farmers according to their quality characteristics and comparing them according to spatial characteristics constituted the focus of this study. For both farmer groups, dry bean sales amount, prices and distance to the sales point were examined according to the product grade, which is the factor determining the quality in 2020 and 2021. According to the findings of this study, there is no expected difference between the prices received by the farmers. However, the results of the analysis show that there is a positive and strong relationship between the product quality and the average sales price obtained.

    Contract Farming in Buckwheat Cultivation

    Adanacioglu, Hakan; Doğan, Nilgün

Contract farming is a deal between a producer and a buyer regarding cultivation of an agricultural product characteristically. In reality, terms and conditions of these contracts can alter dramatically. It can refer to those arrangements involving public firms, government organisations or NGOs and can also refer to private schemes. In this paper, it is only focused on contract farming on arrangements between farmers and private actors. In recent years, buckwheat has gained increasing notice as a promising functional food, owing to its several human health issues and lack of gluten. This study examines buckwheat farmer’s involvement in contract farming in districts of Gümüşhane province which is in the northeast of Turkey. An empirical analysis of the contract farming regarding the buckwheat farmers and postharvest practice has been provided. The survey was conducted in Kelkit, Köse and Şiran districts as only production places of the buckwheat in the province. Data collected from 30 farmers who are engaged in contract farming model. According to data, issues of the contract farming, marketing channels of the buckwheat and perspectives of the farmers for the buckwheat production with contract farming are addressed. The findings of this study reveal that the contract farming model, mostly eliminates the marketing-related concerns of the farmers in the region. Perceive benefits derivable from beginning to buckwheat contract farming was measured based on the following proposals (the commitments to purchase product, the market guarantee, the compliance with the contract terms, purchasing at the agreed price and timely payment) was evaluated using 5 point likert scale. As a result, buckwheat contract farmers should be monitored by the contract buyer for the continuity of the production.
