Öztürk, Serkan; Demirbilek, Ömer
Objective: Volunteers are a critical resource in disaster preparedness and response. This study aims to develop a valid and re liable measurement tool that can assess the reasons behind university students’ reluctance to volunteer in disaster situation. Material and Methods: The study was conducted using an exploratory sequential mixed method design. As a result of the thematic analysis of the semi structured interviews, seven themes were identified, and 81 items were formed. The items whose content validity was evaluated with the Law she technique were reduced to 64 and tested in a pilot study and nec essary adjustments were made. The final scale was applied to a sample group of 731 people who met certain criteria. The data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 24.0 programs. Results: The scale was found suitable for factor analysis according to Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (>0.60) and Bartlett’s test (p<0.05) results. As a result of exploratory factor analysis, 32 items with low factor loadings (<0.33) and over lapping content were eliminated; confirmatory factor analysis con firmed the structure of the scale consisting of 6 factors and 31 items. The fit indices (χ²/df=3.069, Comparative Fit Index=0.933, Goodness of Fit Index=0.893, Incremental Fit Index=0.933, Tucker-Lewis Index=0.925, root mean square error of approximation=0.053) were found to be acceptable. The Cronbach alpha value of the scale was 0.92 in total and ranged between 0.75 and 0.93 for the sub-dimensions. Conclusion: The developed scale stands out as a valid and reliable tool for assessing university students’ reluctance towards disaster vol unteering.

A functional and sufficient volunteer community is needed to reduce the damage of disasters and to have a rapid response and recovery process. Most of the volunteering studies in disasters in the literature focus on the positive side of the volunteering process, but there are many negative points that prevent individuals from volunteering in disasters. In this research, it is aimed to discover why university students, who are one of the most valuable groups in volunteering in disasters, do not volunteer in disasters. The research was conducted with a phenomenological design. Maximum variation and criterion sampling were used to decide the study group. The study group consists of thirteen university students with distinctive characteristics. The interview method was used as the data collection technique, and the semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers was used as the data collection tool. Thematic analysis was conducted with the MAXQDA 2020 qualitative analysis program on the obtained data. As a result of the data analysis, seven themes appeared, consisting of İnformation, Economy, Interpersonal Bonds, Uncertainties, Individual Characteristics, Perceptions of Volunteering, Promotion and Advertising Activities. Finding the negative aspects of volunteering that distracts young people from volunteering will be one of the best preparations for future disasters.

Disasters, by their very nature, cause great destruction and it takes great effort and effort to eliminate these destructions. The destructions experienced are not always equally distributed to the whole society and sectors. In addition to affecting the whole world after the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, its effects were felt most intensely on the health sector and its employees, and the health workers showed the greatest dedication and sacrifice to cope with this disaster. In this study, it is aimed to develop a valid and reliable scale in order to measure the sacrifices of healthcare workers who serve under severe conditions such as high-risk work, overtime hours, and compulsory service during the COVID-19 period. With the help of open-ended questions prepared for this purpose, online interviews were conducted with 9 healthcare professionals. The obtained qualitative data were transformed into measurable scale items and their internal reliability, criterion validity and factor structure were examined on a sample of 138 people. Participants were reached by convenience sampling method. According to the results of the factor analysis, it was found that the scale had a one-dimensional structure. As a result of factor analysis, two items were excluded because their factor loads were below 0.30. The nine-item scale explains 67% of the total variance. The Cronbach's Alpha value of the total scale was found to be 0.929. In conclusion, the findings obtained in this study show that the Patient Sacrifice Scale during the COVID-19 Epidemic is a valid and reliable scale whose psychometric properties have been empirically tested in a Turkish sample.
