Predictors of citations: an analysis of highly-cited-papers in hospitality and tourism research using a machine learning approach

Polat, Eray; Çelik, Fatih; Arici, Hasan Evrim; Köseoglu, Mehmet Ali

In the dynamic nature of hospitality and tourism (H&T) research, it is increasingly difficult to distinguish highly-cited-papers (HCPs) due to the rapid proliferation of publications. This study employs machine learning techniques to identify the predictors of citation counts in H&T research over both short-term (5-year) and long-term (20-year) periods using HCPs. The analysis integrates a theoretical framework comprising normative theory and social constructivist theory. The findings indicate that international citation, PlumXmetrics, and early citations are the most effective determinants in both periods. Furthermore, while the importance of international citations is evident in both periods, the order of importance of the other two predictors changes. PlumXmetrics are more important in the long-term, while early citations are more important in the short-term. In conclusion, this comprehensive and up-to-date study of citation dynamics provides valuable insights for scholars and other stakeholders interested in enhancing the visibility and influence of H&T literature.

Past, present, and future scene of influencer marketing in hospitality and tourism management

Polat, Eray; Çelik, Fatih; Ibrahim, Blend; Gursoy, Dogan

This paper reviews influencer marketing (IM)-research in the tourism and hospitality (H&T) field to provide a state-of-the-art of the past, present, and future of IM-research. It identifies research themes, theoretical underpinnings, and methodologies utilized in IM-research. Seventy-five studies are examined through co-citation, bibliographic coupling and content analysis based on the TCCM (theory/context/characteristics/methodology) framework. Co-citation analysis reveals that IM-research focused on travel blogs, vlogs, celebrity endorsement, influencer authenticity. An assessment of recent studies through bibliographic coupling indicates a partial shift toward the study of more contemporary issues. This field-discipline-focused hybrid-review contributes to literature and practice by presenting the past, present, and future of IM-research.

Unpacking the power of user-generated videos in hospitality and tourism: a systematic literature review and future direction

Polat, Eray; Çelik, Fatih; Ibrahim, Blend; Köseoglu, Mehmet Ali

We review user-generated video (UGV)-research in hospitality and tourism (H&T), provide an overview of its current-state, and suggest ways forward. We adopted a systematic literature review methodology and reviewed 66 articles with TCM (theory/context/methodology) framework. UGV-research focuses on (i) destination image perception, (ii) short-form videos and travel live-streaming, (iii) behavioral intentions, and (iv) crisis management. Theoretical development is diverse, given the descriptive nature of research questions, but it is still in its infancy. The context varies by H&T setting, type of social media platform, population, and country. Research methods and techniques range from traditional analysis to advanced machine learning or artificial intelligence-based quantitative approaches, predominantly qualitative methods.

Relationships Between Depression, Stress, Fear of Missing out, and Compulsive Social Media Use in Covid-19 Process

    Diker, Ersin; Çelik, Fatih

The novel Coronavirus (Covid-19), emerging in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, has rapidly spread to many parts of the world, causing thousands of people to die. In addition to its physical and biological effects, the virus has some psychological effects. Psychological disorders, such as depression, stress, and anxiety are some of these effects. In this process, people have started to use social media platforms to meet their information and social support needs more often. The current study aimed to analyze the mediator role of fear of missing out (FoMO) in the relationship between people's depression and stress level with compulsive social media use (CSMU) in Covid-19 process through a structural equation model (SEM). To this end, an online survey was conducted between 14-20 June 2020 in Turkey (N = 871, 60.7 % women, Mage = 28.70, SD = 9.99) and convenience sampling method used. The findings showed that while depression positively correlates with CSMU, there was no relationship between stress and CSMU. In addition, there was a positive relationship between depression and stress with FoMO, FoMO with CSMU, as well. Moreover, FoMO had a mediation role in the relationship between depression and stress with CSMU. The research’s findings are expected to contribute to the effective communication of the official institutions that manage the crisis related to Covid-19 with the public through social media.

Synthesis of new 1,2,4-triazole compounds containing Schiff and Mannich bases (morpholine) with antioxidant and antimicrobial activities

Ünver, Yasemin; Deniz, Sadik; Çelik, Fatih; Akar, Zeynep; Küçük, Murat; Sancak, Kemal

Compound 2 was synthesized by reacting CS2/KOH with compound 1. The treatment of compound 2 with hydrazine hydrate produced compound 3. Then, compound 3 was converted to Schiff bases (4a–d) by the handling with several aromatic aldehydes. The treatment of triazole compounds 4a–d containing Schiff base with morpholine gave compounds 5a–d. All compounds were tested for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The antioxidant test results of DPPH• radical scavenging and ferric reducing/antioxidant power methods showed good antioxidant activity. The triazole-thiol (3) was the most active, and the effect of the substituent type of the thiophene ring on the activity was same for both Schiff bases (4a–d) and Mannich bases (5a–d). Among the newly synthesized triazole derivatives, the Schiff base 4d and the Mannich base 5d carrying nitro substituent on the thiophene ring showed promising antibacterial and antifungal activity, with lower MIC values than the standard antibacterial ampicillin.

New thiophene-1,2,4-triazole-5(3)-ones: Highly bioactive thiosemicarbazides, structures of Schiff bases and triazole-thiols

Ünver, Yasemin; Sancak, Kemal; Çelik, Fatih; Birinci, Emrah; Küçük, Murat; Soylu, Serkan; Burnaz, Nesibe Arslan

Key compound 2-(4-amino-5-oxo-3-(thiophene-2-ylmethyl)-4,5-dihydro-1,2,4- tiazole-1-yl) acetohydrazide (3) was synthesized by reacting hydrazine hydrate with ethyl-2-(4-amino-5-oxo-3-(thiophene-2-ylmethyl)-4,5-dihydro-1,2,4-tiazole- 1yl)acetate (2), obtained in basic media from 4-amino-5-(thiophene-2-ylmethyl)- 2H-1,2,4-triazole-3(4H)-one (1). Compound 3 was converted to thiosemicarbazide derivatives (4a-d) and Schiff base derivatives 6a-e and 7a-e. The treatment of compound 4 with NaOH gave 4-amino-2-((4-(4-aryl)-5-mercapto-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3- yl)methyl)-5-(thiophene-2-ylmethyl)-2H-1,2,4-triazole-3(4H)-ones (5a-d). All newly compounds, well characterized by elemental analyses, IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectral studies were tested for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Thiosemicarbazide derivatives (4a-d) were highly active in two antioxidant tests with 69.0-88.2% DPPH scavenging and 503-1257 μM TEAC values, while the others showed lower or no activity. The results of the two antioxidant tests correlated well. Moreover, Thiosemicarbazide derivatives (4a-d) also showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Mycobacterium smegmatis. Thiosemicarbazide group deserves attention in the synthesis of bioactive compounds.
