Demir, Nalan
Early childhood experiences play a critical role in shaping mental health outcomes, often contributing to psychological disorders that persist into adulthood. Early diagnosis, therefore, can significantly improve treatment efficacy. To support this, mental health literacy is essential, enabling individuals to recognize symptoms in themselves and others. Young adult fiction that explores mental health issues serves as a powerful medium for raising awareness. It resonates with adolescents who face similar challenges by fostering solidarity, while also educating readers without such experiences. This study analyses the British young adult novel All The Things We Never Said (Rahman, 2019) through descriptive content analysis, using DSM-5 criteria and current psychopathology literature to code and interpret representations of mental disorders. Among the three narrators—Mahreen, Cara, and Olivia—Mahreen grapples with depression and anxiety, while Cara and Olivia exhibit symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. By comparing these portrayals with clinical literature, the novel is shown to offer a realistic depiction of these conditions. Such representations have the potential to promote empathy, strengthen a sense of community among those affected, and enhance mental health literacy among readers.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Corpus-Driven Lexical Profiles of Feminine Words in Turkish: Bayan, Kadın and Karı
Demir, Süleyman
This study aims to examine the semantic and pragmatic features of the three female-referential words “bayan,” “kadın,” and “karı” using a corpus-driven approach. Accordingly, colligations, collocations, semantic preferences, and semantic prosodies of the words were analyzed using concordance lines obtained from the Turkish National Corpus (TNC) with an “extended lexical unit model.” To this end, the concordance lines of each word were subjected to multiple readings, and recurring formal and semantic patterns were classified to determine the semantic relationships between words. The findings show that words have different discursive functions and social representations. The word “bayan” is concentrated in institutional, formal, and neutral contexts; in classificatory and labelling areas of use, while not carrying a distinct emotional prosody. “Kadın,” on the other hand, exhibits a multi-layered pattern of meaning in semantic fields such as emotional evaluation, motherhood/family roles, cultural identities, and political discourse, in addition to physical description; it develops positive and negative prosodies depending on the context. The word “karı,” on the other hand, is used in pejorative, slang, and derogatory contexts; it carries a predominantly negative connotation, producing a distinct negative prosody through insulting adjectives, demeaning comparisons, and masculine possessive discourse. The study demonstrates that female-referenced words are shaped at the level of linguistic choice by gender ideologies, value attributions, and discursive positioning. In this respect, the findings provide important clues for broader sociolinguistic research on how representations of women are constructed.

Güneş, Mustafa
Jennifer Haley’s The Nether premiered in 2013 at the Kirk Douglas Theater. It is an interplay between stage and virtual reality (VR), also known as, cyberspace. This quality makes the play an example of “intermedial” theater, which links digital media elements to the performance on stage indissolubly. The play not only provides a rich exploration of intermediality that reshapes traditional notions of character and acting, but also the characters in the play are presented as having avatars in VR, which ultimately highlights the fluidity of roles based on identity. Applying Judith Butler’s theory of performative construction of identity and gender to analyze the characters, who are portrayed as having double identities and fulfilling fluid gender roles, is highly relevant in a play that uniquely blends dramatic performance with digital media to create a complex narrative landscape. By analyzing key scenes and particularly focusing on three major characters in the play, Sims, Doyle, and Morris, it is aimed in this study to see how performativity, as theorized by Butler, is redefined in virtual environments, as characters navigate identities mediated through digital avatars. The interaction between media both enhances the narrative but also prompts audiences to reflect on the significance of repetitive performance in gender and identity formation; therefore, this study also highlights the play’s innovative approach to media interaction and contributes to contemporary discussions on the relationship between theatre, digital technology, space, and gender studies.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Navigating Global Migration: An Analysis of Exit West through Appadurai’s Five Scapes
Yalcin, Elif Guvendi
The rapid surge in global migration today is deeply intertwined with shifts in the political and economic structures of the late twentieth century, characterized by the dominance of globalization and transnational capital. These shifts, while rooted in the historical legacies of colonialism, have assumed new dimensions as globalization reconfigures the movement of people, capital, and ideas. In Exit West, Mohsin Hamid connects the personal experiences of migration with larger global forces, using magical doors to metaphorically illustrate the fluidity and unpredictability of global migration patterns. This paper employs Arjun Appadurai's five "scapes," which are ethnoscapes, technoscapes, financescapes, mediascapes, and ideoscapes, to examine how Exit West reflects and critiques the dynamics of globalization, migration, and identity formation. Hamid highlights how technological advancements facilitate movement while simultaneously revealing the inequalities that persist under the guise of globalization. Through the journeys of Saeed and Nadia, the novel reveals the fragmented nature of global flows and their impact on personal and collective identities.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023John Clare’in Tımarhane Şiirlerinde Ev Düşüncesi ve Bellek
