A review on effects of diethyl ether on cyclic variations in diesel engines

    Sezer, İsmet

Diethyl ether (DEE) can be used in diesel engines as a fuel or fuel additive. The review study was compiled from the findings of several studies in this area. The diverse techniques are employed to mitigate the detrimental pollutants emitted by diesel engines. The first approach to reducing emissions involves altering the fuel system and engine design to improve combustion, but this is an expensive and time–consuming process. The utilization of various exhaust gas devices, such as a particle filter and catalytic converter, is necessary for the second way. However, the engine performance could be negatively impacted by these tools. Additionally, these exhaust devices increases the vehicle and maintain costs. The use of different alternative fuels or fuel additives is the third way that reduces emissions while improving engine performance. The particulate matter (PM), smoke, and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are the main environmental pollutants released by diesel engines into the atmosphere. The decreasing PM and NOx emissions at the same time is practically very difficult. The majority of researches indicate that using alternative fuels, such as natural gas, biogas, and biodiesel, or blending additives with conventional or alternative fuels, is the best way to reduce emissions. However, the characteristics of the fuel have a significant influence on cycle variations, which have a significant impact on engine performance, fuel economy, and emissions. Therefore, it is very important that the results of studies on the impact of DEE on cyclic variation are evaluated together to practice applications and to guide future studies. As a result, the primary focus of this study is on the usage of DEE as a fuel or fuel additive with different diesel engine fuels. The aim of this review is to investigate, using the available knowledge in literature, how DEE affects cyclic variations.

A review study on the use of dimethyl ether in diesel engines: effects on CO2 emissions

    Sezer, İsmet

Emissions from vehicles and other fuel combustion systems can alter the composition of the atmosphere and augment its capacity to absorb heat. These gases, which are effective at trapping heat, are known as greenhouse gases and include all gases found in vehicle emissions. Reducing the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) has become an urgent necessity around the world, and many countries have imposed limits on their CO2 output. Using biofuels in automotive engines is an effective way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The CO2 emissions emitted from the combustion of biofuels are absorbed as trees and plants grow. Biofuels can be used either as pure fuels or blended with conventional fuels. Most research has declared that the most effective way to reduce greenhouse emissions is the use of various biofuels. Therefore, it is essential to assess the outcomes of research regarding alternate fuels or fuel additives to determine their proper utilization. Using of diesel engines can also help reduce CO2 emissions as they emit less CO2 emissions than gasoline engines. This review study investigates the effects the using of dimethyl ether on CO2 emissions in diesel engines. The results showed that CO2 emissions decrease when using the pure DME and DME blends with diesel and LPG fuels due to the oxygen content and the lower carbon to hydrogen ratio of DME. The decrements in CO2 emissions for pure DME, diesel–DME blends and LPG–DME blend are about 5.2–18.3%, 3–41.6% and 10.6–16.4%, respectively.

A review study on the using of diethyl ether in diesel engines: effects on smoke and PM emissions

    Sezer, İsmet

This study was compiled from the results of various researches performed on using diethyl etheras a fuel or fuel additive in diesel engines. Three different techniques are used for the reductionof the harmful exhaust emissions of diesel engines. The first technique for the reduction ofharmful emissions is improved the combustion by modification of engine design and fuelinjection system, but this process is expensive and time consuming. The second technique is theusing various exhaust gas devices like catalytic converter and diesel particulate filter. However, the use of these devices affects negatively diesel engine performance. The final technique toreduce emissions and also improve diesel engine performance is the use of various alternativefuels or fuel additives. The major pollutants of diesel engines are oxide of nitrogen (NOx) andsmoke or particulate matter (PM). It is very difficult to reduce NOx and PM simultaneously inpractice. Most of the researchers declare that the best way to reduce is the use of variousalternative fuels i.e. natural gas, biogas, biodiesel or using the additives with alternative fuels orconventional diesel fuel. Therefore, it is very important that the results of various studies onalternative fuels or fuel additives are evaluated together to practice applications. Especially, thisstudy focus on the use of diethyl ether in diesel engines as fuel or fuel additive in various dieselengine fuels. This review study investigates the effects of diethyl ether addition on the smokeand PM emissions.
