Sen, Muserref Ebru; Yakut, Hatice
Aim: The study aims to examine the psychological consequences such as anxiety levels, quality of life, depression, and participation in the care of parents with high-risk infants who have varying levels of neurological impact severity. Material and Methods: Forty high-risk infants and their mothers were included in the study. The infants were divided into three groups according to the Dubowitz Neurologic Assessment Scale. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS), Quality of Life Short Form 36 (SF-36), and the NICU Care Participation Scale were administered. Results: There were significant differences in the mothers' anxiety and depression levels (p < 0.001) and many parameters of quality of life according to the severity of neurological impact. However, it was determined that the severity of the neurological impact did not affect the mothers' participation in care (p > 0.01). Discussion: Although our study revealed that parents' depression, anxiety, and quality of life levels changed according to the severity of neurological impairment in high-risk infants, care participation was not affected. The limited sample size and the inability to generalize the results to different cultural and socioeconomic groups are important limitations. Nevertheless, it can be concluded that the medical condition of the newborn seriously affects the mental health of the parents.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Relationship between androgen levels and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio in patients diagnosed with hirsutism
Sayilan, Samet; Mert, Meral; Kulakac, Nursen
Aim: Hirsutism is a disease involving increased terminal hair growth in women with a male-type distribution pattern in androgen-sensitive areas such as the chin, upper lip, chest, abdomen, back, and thighs. Our review of the available literature revealed no previous studies concerning the role of the peripheral blood neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), an easily calculated and noninvasive marker, in hirsutism. The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between androgen levels and NLR in female patients diagnosed with hirsutism. Material and Methods: The files of 392 patients presenting to the Bakirkoy Dr. Sadi Konuk Education and Research Hospital due to hirsutism between 2018 and 2020 were included in this cross-sectional, retrospective study. Patients' hirsutism and menstrual cycles, age at menarche, number of pregnancies in the case of married women, number of living children, and history of infertility were investigated. Hyperandrogenemia findings, such as hair loss and acne, were also recorded. Patients' biochemical and complete blood count parameters were evaluated. Results: The mean age of the participants was 26.27 +/- 6.37 years (min-max: 16-48), and their androgen levels were statistically significantly associated with high-density lipoprotein, hemoglobin, hematocrit, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, and HbA1c levels (p<0.05). However, no significant relationship was found between patients' androgen levels and NLR values (p>0.05). Discussion: No significant relationship was determined in this study between androgen levels and NLR values in women diagnosed with hirsutism. Due to the limited numbers of previous similar studies, further research with larger patient numbers is now needed.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Effect of precautionary and normalization steps on course of COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey
Bostan, Sedat; Agac, Gokhan; Sahinöz, Saime
Aim: The COVID-19 pandemic began in China and has now spread across the whole world, and many countries such as Turkey are still fighting against this pandemic. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of precautionary and normalization steps taken by the Turkish government on the number of confirmed cases, current cases, and deaths due to the COVID-19 in Turkey. Materials and Methods: The study used exponential regression models to estimate the number of confirmed cases, deaths, and current cases. The study data were collected from the Turkish Ministry of Health, Turkish Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the national public broadcaster of Turkey. Results: The precautions taken during the COVID-19 pandemic have caused the exponentially increasing number of cases to be brought under control and to decrease exponentially. The normalization steps taken paused the exponential decrease in the number of cases and caused the number of cases to remain flat during the summer months and then rise again. If the normalization steps were not implemented and the precautions taken continued in the same way, it was calculated that the numbers of COVID-19 current cases would be reset on June 26, 2020. The total number of deaths would remain at 4423 and the total number of confirmed cases would be 150586. Discussion: As a result, the impact of precautionary and normalization steps on the course of the COVID-19 pandemic was examined. It has been observed that the impact of these steps on the pandemic is exponential. The results provide guidelines for health authorities and administrators to take necessary precautions.
