Can, Ibrahim; Yerlikaya, Gokhan; Yalçin, Seda; Bayrakdaroglu, Serdar; Kayhan, Recep Fatih; Uluç, Ender Ali; Stefanica, Valentina; Ceylan, Halil Ibrahim

Background:This quasi-experimental crossover study aimed to examine the acute effects of dry cupping therapy (DCT) and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on fatigue and perceived exertion in anaerobic performance among physically active individuals. Methods:Twelve male participants (mean age: 24.1 +/- 2.37 years), all students from the Faculty of Sports Sciences, were recruited to participate voluntarily. Anaerobic performance parameters, including peak power, mean power (MP), and fatigue index (FI), were assessed using a Monark 839E cycling ergometer under 3 distinct conditions: NMES, DCT, and a control condition (no intervention), with each session separated by a 48-hour rest period. Perceived exertion was evaluated immediately following each test session using Borg's rate of perceived exertion (RPE) scale. Both NMES and DCT were administered bilaterally to the hamstring (m. hamstring) and quadriceps femoris (m. quadriceps femoris) muscles for 20 minutes before testing. Results:The results revealed no statistically significant differences in peak power and MP across the conditions. However, significant effects were identified for FI (F(2, 22) = 4.08, P = .031, eta p(2) = 0.27) and RPE (F(2, 22] = 8.88, P = .0015, eta p(2) = 0.45). Post hoc pairwise comparisons indicated that NMES significantly reduced FI compared to the control condition (P = .0311), with a small to medium effect size (Cohen's d = 0.44). In terms of RPE, DCT significantly lowered values compared to both the control (P = .0018) and NMES conditions (P = .0005), demonstrating medium (Cohen's d = 0.74) and small to medium (Cohen's d = 0.37) effect sizes, respectively. Conclusions:While NMES and DCT did not elicit acute improvements in peak or mean anaerobic power, both interventions effectively mitigated fatigue and reduced perceived exertion during maximal anaerobic exercise. These findings suggest that NMES and DCT may serve as valuable recovery modalities for mitigating fatigue in sports characterized by high anaerobic demands. Future research should investigate the chronic effects of these interventions and explore their utility among trained athletes to determine their broader applicability in enhancing athletic performance.

Can, Ibrahim; Yerlikaya, Gokhan; Bayrakdaroglu, Serdar; Ceylan, Halil Ibrahim; Subak, Guelhan Erdem; Bayrakdaroglu, Yesim; Uluç, Sinem; Nikolaidis, Pantelis T.

Background: This study examines the acute effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) application on peak power (PP) and mean propulsive power (MPP) during a weighted squat jump (SJ(Loaded)). Methods: Fourteen male students (age: 23.71 +/- 2.30 years; height: 173.71 +/- 6.89 cm; weight: 69.59 +/- 9.08 kg; body mass index (BMI): 26.87 +/- 3.49) from the Faculty of Sport Sciences participated voluntarily. PP and MPP values were measured during the SJ(Loaded) movement, performed with an external load of 40% body weight, using a computer-integrated linear velocity transducer system (T-Force Dynamic Measurement System Ergotech Consulting SL, Murcia, Spain). NMES was bilaterally applied to the musculus hamstring and musculus quadriceps femoris for 20 minutes. The Shapiro-Wilk test, skewness and kurtosis values assessed data normality. Results: Differences between pre- and post-test PP and MPP power performances were analyzed using Paired Samples t-tests. Cohen's d (ES: effect size) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were also calculated to assess the pairwise comparisons' magnitude. According to the analysis results, statistically significant improvements were observed in both PP (t (13) = -2.612, p = 0.021, d: -0.69 (-1.27; -0.10, 95% CI)) and MPP (t (13) = -2.756, p = 0.016, d: -0.73 (-1.32; -0.13, 95% CI), moderate effect) values after the NMES application. Conclusions: NMES significantly enhances PP and MPP during loaded squat jumps, highlighting its potential as a supplementary training tool for improving explosive power. Future studies should explore its long-term effects across different sports and populations, such as female athletes or older adults, to optimize training protocols. Research on NMES intensities and frequencies may provide insights into optimal parameters for power development and neuromuscular adaptation.

Sprint and Anaerobic Power with the Soccer-Specific ACTN3 Gene: A Distintive Example; [Sprint y Potencia Anaeróbica con el Gen ACTN3 Específico del Fútbol: Un Ejemplo Distintivo]

Söyler, Mehmet; Zileli, Raif; Özkamçı, Hüseyin; Diker, Gürkan; Sever, Mehmet Onur; Bayrakdaroglu, Serdar; Ön, Sadi; Can, Ibrahim; Ulucan, Korkut; Aslan, Beste Tacal

The aim of this study is twofold: (1) to identify differences in certain anaerobic parameters (10m sprint, 30m sprint, anaerobic power, and Illinois agility tests) between professional and amateur soccer players, and (2) to determine whether there is a difference in the ACTN3 gene polymorphism between professional and amateur soccer players. Ultimately, the goal is to reveal which parameters contribute to the differentiation in these two aspects. A total of 133 volunteer soccer players, including 71 professionals and 62 amateurs, participated in the research. DNA extraction from buccal epithelial cells was performed using a commercial kit to determine the genetic background of the athletes, and Real-Time PCR was conducted for genotyping. Statistical analysis of the findings obtained from the test results was performed using the SPSS 23 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) package program. The homogeneity of variance of the data was assessed using the Levene Test, and normal distribution analyses were conducted using the Shapiro-Wilk Test. Chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests were employed for parameter analysis. The significance level was set at p<0.05. Evaluation of the data in our study revealed no statistically significant difference in ACTN3 rs1815739 gene polymorphism between the groups (p>0.05). However, there is a statistically significant difference in anaerobic parameters (10m sprint, 30m sprint, and anaerobic power) except for the Illinois test (p<0.05). In conclusion, our study found that gene polymorphism is not a differentiating factor between professional and amateur soccer players, but speed (10m and 30m) and anaerobic power parameters are differentiating factors.

The Distinguishing Factor in Soccer Players is Aerobic Performance, not the ACTN3 Gene; [El Factor Distintivo en los Jugadores de Fútbol es el Rendimiento Aeróbico y no el gen ACTN3]

Zileli, Raif; Söyler, Mehmet; Diker, Gürkan; Özkamçı, Hüseyin; Bayrakdaroglu, Serdar; Sever, Mehmet Onur; Can, Ibrahim; Ön, Sadi; Aslan, Beste Tacal; Ulucan, Korkut

SUMMARY: The purpose of this study was to reveal the differences between ACTN3 genotype (RR, RX, XX) and aerobic performance [Yo-Yo IRT1 (m), VO2 max (ml/kg/min)] in professional and regional amateur league soccer players and to reveal which of these parameters was a distinctive factor in these athletes.71 professional soccer players (age: 23.66 ±4.11 years; body height: 1.79 ± 6.99 m; body weight: 76.02 ± 6.76 kg; body fat: 11.59±3.11 %) and 62 regional amateur soccer players (age: 23.63 ±3.77 years; body height: 1.81 ± 5.77 m; body weight: 76.36 ± 7.53 kg; body fat: 15.60±4.65 %) volunteered for the study. After DNA extraction from buccal epithelial cells via a commercial kit was performed for the genetic background of the athletes, Real-Time PCR was carried out for genotyping. Furthermore, Yo-Yo IRT1 test was performed to determine the aerobic performance of the soccer players. SPSS 23 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) package program was used for the statistical analysis of the data obtained in the tests. Shapiro-Wilk test for normality and Levene's test for homogeneity of variance were performed. Chi-Square, Independent Sample T Test and One Way ANOVA test were used in the analysis of the parameters. Statistical significance was set as p<0.05. In the study, there found no meaningful statistical significance in terms of the rs1815739 polymorphism in the ACTN3 gene between the groups (p>0.05); however, there was a statistical significance in favor of professional soccer players in terms of aerobic parameters (p<0.05). Consequently, it can be said that aerobic performance is the distinguishing factor, not the ACTN3 gene, in soccer players.

Can, İbrahim; Yildiz, Beyza; Yasar, Aras Beka; Bayrakdaroğlu, Serdar

The aim of this investigation was to evaluate an overall performance of the elite women football players. In accordance withthis purpose, 11 women football players (age: 21,5 ± 2,58 years; height: 160,8 ± 5,17 cm; weight: 55,8 ± 7,23 kg) who plays inTurkish Women’s 1st Football League participated voluntarily. In order to measure athlete’s aerobic capacity, Yo-Yointermittent recovery test (Yo-Yo IR1) was applied and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) values were estimated by usingrunning distances obtained from the test results. The Wingate anaerobic power test (WanT) to measure the athlete's anaerobicproperties, the vertical jump (VJ) and standing long jump (SLJ) tests to determine explosive power, the Illinois agility test tomeasure agility skills, 10 and 30 meters sprint runs to measure sprint performances, hand grip and back-leg strength tests tomeasure strength characteristics were used. In order to obtain power and velocity parameters, loaded-squat jump (SJLoaded) wasapplied with an resistance that equaled to 40% of body weight and bench throw (BT) was applied with an resistance thatequaled to 30% of body weight of the participants by applying an isoinertial device and results of peak power (PP), peakvelocity (PV), mean propulsive power (MPP), and mean propulsive velocity (MPV) during both movements were recorded.Statistical analysis was used in the assessment of the data. According to analysis results, it was achieved that Yo-Yo IR1 runningdistances was as 676,3 ± 156,4 meters, while VO2max values of athletes were estimated as 42,2 ± 1,20 ml/kg-1/min-1. Relative andabsolute anaerobic power values for elite women football players were obtained as 439,7 (± 61,18 W) and 8,04 (± 1,09 W/kg) formaximal anaerobic power, 316,1 (± 34,46 W) and 5,78 (± 0,56 W/kg) for maximal anaerobic capacity, 193,6 (±22,30 W) and 3,55 (±0,61 W/kg) for minimal anaerobic power, respectively. In addition, fatigue index values measured as 55,7 (± 3,75 %).Participant’s right and left hand grip strength values were obtained as 30,6 (± 4,62 kg) and 29,6 (± 4,5 kg), back and leg strengthvalues measured as 90,2 (± 18,7 kg) and 101,8 (± 29,5 kg), respectively. Participant’s 10 and 30 meters sprint duration wereobtained as 1,85 (± 0,12 sec) and 4,96 (± 0,34 sec). SLJ, VJ and agility values were obtained as 178,4 (± 21,1 cm), 35,7 (± 4,60 cm)and 17,6 (±0,67 sec), respectively. Velocity and power values for athletes during BT movement were obtained as 1,21 (± 0,10m/sec) for MPV, 2,04 (± 0,18 m/sec) for PV, 353,6 (± 83,2 W) for MPP and 666,3 (± 152,1 W) for PP. In response to this, velocityand power values for athletes during SJLoaded movement were obtained as 1,21 (±,10 m/sec) for MPV, 2,04 (± ,18 m/sec) for PV,353,6 (± 83,2 W) for MPP and 666,3 (± 152,1 W) for PP. As a result, although there are many studies on physical or physiologicalcharacteristics of elite male footballers, the literature on the overall performance characteristics of women football players arelimited. It is thought that the results obtained are important to fill this lack in the literature and will be the reference source for future research.

    Can, İbrahim

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between sprint and jump performance with velocity parameters in the loaded-squat jump exercise (SQ Loaded ). In accordance with this purpose, a total of 13 athletes competing in martial sports have participated in this study voluntarily. In this study, sprint tests, vertical jump (VJ), standing long jump (SLJ) tests and one repetition maximal strength test were applied. In order to determine velocity and power parameters, SQ Loaded exercise was applied by using an external load that corresponds to 40% of body weights of the subjects via an isoinertial velocity transducer (T-Force dynamic measurement system) and values of mean propulsive velocity (MPV), peak velocity (PV), mean propulsive power (MPP) and peak power (PP) were obtained. Descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation analysis and Shapiro-Wilk normality tests were used for data assessment. It has been concluded that there is no statistically significant relation between 10, 20 and 30 meter sprint times and the values of MPV (r=-,332; r=-,375; r=-,446; p>.05 respectively), PV (r=-,058; r=-,118; r=-,165; p>.05 respectively), MPP (r=-,285; r=-,482; r=-,485; p>.05 respectively) and PP (r=-,205; r=-,512; r=-,391; p>.05 respectively) during SQ Loaded exercise. In addition, while no statistically significant relation has been obtained between the VJ and SLJ values of the participants and MPV (r=,496; r =,429; p>.05 respectively) and PV (r=,300; r=,223; p>.05 respectively) values during propulsive stage of SQ Loaded exercise, it has been ascertained that there is a statistically positive and significant relation between the values of MPP(r=,620; r=,580; p>.05 respectively) and PP (r=,678; r=,572; p<.05 respectively). In conclusion, it can be suggested that lifting velocity and power values don’t have a positive effect on short sprint performance; however power values affect the vertical jump and standing long jump performances positively.
