Yield and quality traits of some perennial forages as both sole crops and intercropping mixtures under irrigated conditions

Sayar, Mehmet Salih; Han, Yavuz; Yolcu, Halil; Yücel, Hatice

A field study was conducted to evaluate the yield and quality traits of sole lucerne (L), sole bromegrass (B), sole tall fescue (T), sole orchardgrass (O), sole ryegrass (R), and lucerne + bromegrass + tall fescue (L+B+T) and lucerne + bromegrass + tall fescue + orchardgrass + ryegrass (L+B+T+O+R) intercropping mixtures at the GAP International Agricultural Research and Training Centre under the irrigated conditions during 2009, 2010, and 2011 in the Southeastern Turkey. Dry matter yield (DMY), crude protein content (CPC), crude protein yield (CPY), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), dry digestible matter (DDM), dry matter intake (DMI), total digestible nutrients (TDN), and relative feed value (RFV) were determined in this study. The L+B+T intercropping mixture and sole lucerne provided higher yields than the other crops tested. Sole lucerne had higher protein and quality contents than the other sole perennial forages and intercropping mixtures. The L+B+T intercropping mixture had a higher yield and quality than the other sole perennial forages and intercropping mixtures, with the exception of sole lucerne.

The effect of water stress on spikelet position weight variation in wheat

    Yildirim, Mustafa

This study was conducted in Eskisehir during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 growing seasons, and aimed to evaluate the response of six bread wheat varieties to rainfed and irrigated conditions in terms of grain yield, heading date, plant height and position weight variation (PWV). Of the six varieties tested, three (Sultan, Yildiz, Bezostaja) are drought-sensitive cultivars and three (Gerek, Altay, Sonmez) are drought-tolerant cultivars. Spikes from each variety were divided into five spikelet groups in order to study the effect of spikelet position upon grain weight (S1, S2, S3, S4 and S5, with S1 the spikelet closest to the base). This study focused on position weight variation (PWV) in order to better understand how 1000-kernel weight is affected by spikelet position under both rainfed and irrigated conditions and thus gains a better understanding of wheat resistance to drought. Linear increases in grain yield, heading date and plant height were observed in response to irrigated conditions, whereas a linear increase in PWV was observed in response to rainfed conditions for both seasons. Grain yield was negatively associated with heading date (r=-0.746). PWV was positively associated with grain yield and negatively associated with heading date (p<0.01; r=0.804 and r=-0.860, respectively). The observed differences in grain weight between spikelet positions have important implications for drought tolerance in wheat and can be used as a new parameter for predicting drought tolerance.

Yield and quality characteristics of sunflower silages in highlands

Guney, Erdal; Tan, Mustafa; Yolcu, Halil

This research was carried out to compare the yield and quality characteristics of four sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) genotypes (i.e., confectionery Tekirdag landrace, confectionery Erzurum landrace, oilseed Sirena and oilseed C70165 hybrids) and one corn (Zea mays L.) genotype (i.e., SZE TC-S13 hybrid) in the Agriculture Faculty of Ataturk University in the east of Turkey during the period between 2005 and 2006. The study was designed in a randomized complete block design with five treatments replicated three times. The genotypes were evaluated in terms of forage properties as well as chemical and physical properties of silages in both years. According to the results, the corn genotype had better yield and silage qualities than sunflower genotypes. But crude protein contents of silages of sunflower genotypes were superior in comparison to the corn genotype. Also amongst sunflower genotypes, confectionery Tekirdag and Erzurum landraces had slightly higher silage qualities than oilseed sunflower hybrids.

Effects of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria on some morphologic characteristics, yield and quality contents of Hungarian vetch

Yolcu, Halil; Gunes, Adem; Gullap, M.Kerim; Cakmakci, Ramazan

This research study was designed to determine the effects of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on some morphological characteristics, yield and quality contents of Hungarian vetch (Vicia pannonica Crantz.) in the Kelkit Aydi{dotless}n Dogan Vocational Training School Research Area during 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 plant growing season. The research consisted of a control (without plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria) and 12 different plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (Pseudomonas putida PPB310, Bacillus cereus BCB51, Pantoea agglomerans PAB58, Pseudomonas fluorescens PFC82, Pseudomonas fluorescens PF84, Arthrobacter mysorens AM235, Paenibacillus polymyxa PP315, Pantoea agglomerans PAA362, Bacillus atrophaeus BA361, Bacillus megaterium BMA424, Bacillus megaterium BMA479 and Bacillus subtilis BS521) seed inoculations and three replicates. Some morphological characteristics (stem diameter, plant height and leaf number), dry matter yield, crude protein, crude protein yield, ADF, NDF, macro and micro-elements (B, Ca, Na, K, Mg, P, S, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) were tested in the research study. According to the results of the research study, some of the PGPR treatments had positive effect on morphological characteristics (especially PFC82, BA361 and PAB58), dry matter yield (very little PAA362), crude protein (very little PFC82), ADF and NDF (especially BA361) and macro and micro-elements (especially PAA362) of Hungarian vetch.

The effects of some organic and chemical fertilizer applications on yield, morphology, quality and mineral content of common vetch (Vicia sativa L.)

    Yolcu, Halil

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of some organic and chemical fertilizers on morphological, yield and quality properties and mineral contents of common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) between 2007 and 2008 in Gümüşhane, Turkey. Treatments were control (no fertilizer), liquid manure (LM = 51-52 L ha -1N), chemical fertilizer (CF = 30 kg N ha -1+ 80-100 kg P 2O 5ha -1), three leonardite doses (L 1= 2.8; L 2= 5.6 and L 3= 8.4 kg N ha -1), three zeolite doses (Z 1= 0.4; Z 2= 0.8 and Z 3= 1.2 N kg ha -1) and three solid cattle manure doses (SM 1= 34-35 kg N ha -1, SM 2= 68-70 kg N ha -1, SM 3= 102-105 kg N ha -1). Dry hay yield (DHY), leaf weight, stem weight, plant height, leaf number, crude protein content (CP), crude protein yield (CPY), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), Ca, Fe, K, Mg, B, Cu, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S and Zn contents were determined. Organic and chemical fertilizer applications had significant effect (P<0.01) on DHY, leaf weight, stem weight, CP, CPY and mineral contents except leaf number, ADF and NDF in the both years. The plant height were significantly (P<0.05) affected by the treatments in the first year. The SM 2application in the first year and control and LM applications in the second year resulted to obtain improved yield components and crude protein yield. Z 2and Z 3applications also loomed large in terms of mineral contents.
