Investigation of structural and adhesion properties of ZnO and h-BN doped TiO2 coatings on Cp–Ti alloy

Belet, Ali Kadir; Şüküroğlu, Süleyman; Şüküroğlu, Ebru Emine

Titanium and its alloys are widely used in aircraft, automotive, chemistry, marine, and military industries owing to their superior properties such as specific strength, very low density, high melting point, high corrosion resistance, good fatigue strength and toughness, low elastic modules, and excellent biocompatibility. However, insufficient tribological properties such as high and unstable friction coefficient, low scraping wear resistance and strong adhesion tendency, and poor corrosion resistance in some aggressive corrosive environments such as severe chloride solution limits the use of titanium and its alloys in some engineering applications. For this reason, it has become quite common to change and/or improve the surface properties of titanium and its alloys. In this study, the structural properties of TiO2 coatings with zinc oxide (ZnO) added TiO2 and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) added TiO2 grown composite coatings, respectively, on Cp–Ti substrates by micro-arc oxidation method and the adhesion behavior between the base material and coatings were investigated.

Effects of graphene oxide addition on wear behaviour of composite coatings fabricated by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) on AZ91 magnesium alloy

Kucukosman, Rıdvan; Sukuroglu, Ebru Emine; Totik, Yasar; Sukuroglu, Suleyman

Graphene oxide (GO) integrated composite coatings were deposited on AZ91 magnesium alloys by the PEO (Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation) and the treatment which has a post-PEO hydrothermal process. For the first group samples, PEO was performed in the silicate/phosphate-based electrolyte including 5–10 µm in size the GO particles synthesized using the Tour Method. For the second group samples, after PEO treatment, the post-PEO hydrothermal process was carried out in the oven in the GO-distilled water mixture containing GO produced with the same protocol. The effects of GO on wear behavior, structural and morphological features of composite coatings were examined with a pin-on-disc tribometer, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. The results showed that the addition of GO improved significantly the adhesion to the substrate material of composite coatings, increased the coating thickness and hardness. Post-PEO hydrothermal process resulted in the formation of partial a thin solid lubricant GO film on the surface of composite coatings and thus exhibited the best wear and friction resistance.

Investigation of characterization and tribological behavior of composite oxide coatings doped with h-BN and graphite particles on ZA-27 alloy by micro-arc oxidation

Kaplan, Erdar; Sukuroglu, Ebru Emine; Cuvalci, Olkan

This paper investigates the tribological effects of composite oxide coatings grown on ZA-27 surfaces under dry sliding condition. Coating processes were conducted using three different electrolytic solutions through micro-arc oxidation (MAO) method. The base electrolytic solution without any particles as additives was labeled as MAO-Coated, whereas electrolytic solution labeled as Coated-A contained graphite particles and Coated-B contained hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) particles incorporated into base solution. The morphology of each coated samples were analyzed using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The friction and wear tests were conducted using a pin-on-disc tester in order to evaluate the tribological behavior. Results indicated the friction coefficients of both Coated-A and Coated-B samples were lower when compared to that of uncoated ZA-27 alloy. Further comparative studies showed Coated-A samples containing graphite particles resulted in the lowest friction coefficient.

Effects of voltage on the components of surface integrity of Al2O3 ceramic coatings on AA2024 by plasma electrolytic oxidation

Matin, Reza; Totik, Yasar; Sukuroglu, Ebru Emine; Efeoglu, Ihsan; Santos, Telmo G.

It is said that plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is considered as an effective technique to boost the surface properties of light materials by means of forming ceramic films on their surfaces. In this study, three different voltage values were applied to the PEO process to AA2024 so that Al2O3 ceramic coatings were directly supplied for AA 2024 substrates by PEO and it is focused on the adhesion of interface between coating and substrate. All of the cases such as microstructure, phase composition, thickness, roughness and hardness of Al2O3 ceramic coatings were assayed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Atomic-force microscopy (AFM), Eddy Current Non-destructive testing and microhardness test, respectively. The results showed that roughness, hardness and thickness of the coatings were increased as we increased the voltage. Therefore, it could be claimed that the voltage parameters have an important role in the unified coating on the metal surface as it is directly connected with the morphologies of the PEO coating.

Investigation of high temperature wear resistance of TiCrAlCN/TiAlN multilayer coatings over M2 steel

    Sukuroglu, E.E.; Baran, O.; Totik, Y.; Efeoglu, I.

In this study, TiCrAlCN/TiAlN multilayer coatings were deposited on M2 high speed steel substrates by the Closed-Field Unbalanced Magnetron Sputtering system. The chemical composition, microstructure, morphology, mechanical and high temperature wear resistance properties of the coatings were characterized, analyzed and compared to the substrate. The high temperature wear tests were carried out under a load of 2 N at the lap (wear test distance) of 50 m and in dry sliding condition at Room Temperature (RT), 150, 300, 450, and 600 °C on atmospheric conditions. It has been found that the TiCrAlCN/TiAlN multilayer coatings have a higher wear resistance than the M2 substrate. The stable friction behavior and low friction tendency was determined at 600 °C. When the test temperature increased, the wear rates decreased. Narrow and smooth wear tracks and also the lowest wear rate were obtained at 600 °C.

Despite the fact that Titanium and its alloys are materials which have excellent corrosion-resistant properties, they have poor wear and friction performance under tribological conditions. The aim of this study is to find suitable parameters for the surface treatment of Cp-Ti substrates which are used under saline environment. In this study, TiO2 coatings were grown on Cp-Ti substrates at different frequencies which are parameters of the coating process. Due to its low cost and ability to achieve high thicknesses, The Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) method was applied to grow TiO2 coatings. The microstructures, morphology, and crystallographic structure were analyzed using SEM and XRD. Tribocorrosion properties of the coatings were investigated using a combination of the pin-on-disk wear test and potentiodynamic polarization test units. The frequency is known to have a strong impact on the PEO process. The impacts of frequency changes on the PEO coating performance were examined under a constant voltage. As result, the increase of the frequency caused smaller pores and cracks in the surface morphology of the coating and at the same time this yielded an increment on the tribocorrosion behavior of the coating.

The investigation of adhesion and fatigue properties of TiN/TaN multilayer coatings

    Baran, Ö.; Sukuroglu, E.E.; Efeoglu, İ.; Totik, Y.

TiN/TaN multilayer coatings exhibit excellent mechanical properties when compared to single layer nitride coatings. In this study, TiN/TaN multilayer coatings were deposited on Mo-alloy and W-alloy substrates by CFUBMS. The structural and mechanical properties of coatings were analysed using XRD, EDS, SEM and a micro-hardness tester, respectively. To determine the adhesion and fatigue behaviour of the coatings were performed a scratch test in two modes that a standard mode with progressive loading and sliding-fatigue multimode operation with unidirectional sliding, respectively. A microscope was used to characterize adhesion and fatigue failures. The structural, mechanical, adhesion and fatigue properties of TiN/TaN multilayer coatings significantly changed depending on the substrate.

Increasing single-lap joint strength by adherend curvature-induced residual stresses

    Temiz, Ş.; Akpinar, S.; Aydin, M.D.; Sancaktar, E.

Single-lap joint (SLJ) geometry is the most widely used type of adhesive joint geometry. In this joint, peel stresses occur at the overlap ends due to load eccentricity and the presence of shear-free adhesive termination surfaces. These peel stresses, along with the transverse tensile stresses which occur along the overlap longitudinal axes, and adhesive shear stresses, ultimately cause joint failure. Obviously, reductions in these stresses should result in higher joint strength and increased load capacity. To this end, we exploited elastic spring-back capability of (steel) metal adherends by initially forming curved segments of varying arc lengths and radii at overlap ends. These adherends with curved-end sections were then bonded in single-lap configuration, simply by applying sufficient bonding pressure to elastically flatten the curved segments to result in typically flat overlap sections subsequent to adhesive cure and the removal of bonding pressure. Since the elastic adherend overlap ends tend to revert back to their initial curved form, they exert compressive residual stresses on the adhesive layer in the overlap end regions. We determined that the compressive residual stresses induced in this fashion considerably increased the load capacity of SLJs subjected to tension.

Effect of protrusion at the ends of bondline in single lap joints under tension and bending

Akpinar, Salih; Temiz, Semsettin; Aydin, Murat Demir; Özel, Adnan

In this work, elasto-plastic stress analysis of single lap joints with and without protrusion in adhesive bondline subjected to tension and bending was carried out using 2D non-linear finite element analysis and confirmed experimentally. AA 2024-T3 aluminum adherends were bonded with SBT 9244 film adhesive. The protrusion was obtained by extending the adhesive film by 2 mm from the overlap length at both overlap ends. Three different adherend thicknesses and overlap lengths for each loading and bondline type were used. The joints with and without protrusion, for comparison, were loaded with the same load for each adherend thickness and overlap length. Finally, it was observed that the protrusion reduces the strength in the joint under tension, while the protrusion increases the strength in the joint under bending.
