Polat, Mehmet Ali; Akbas, Yusuf Ekrem; Sancar, Canan; ŞİT, Ahmet
In the aftermath of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, the occurrence of financial turmoil even in developed economies has sparked renewed debates on financial stability and caused the rise of the relevance of the variables employed to represent financial stability, which has gained increasing importance in the literature. This study investigates the impact of economic stability and uncertainty on financial stability in the United States over the period 1970 to 2022. Financial stability is proxied by the index developed by Owoundi, Mbassi, and Owoundi (2021), while economic stability is captured through the International Country Risk Guide (ICRG 2014) index. The relationship among the variables is examined using the Fourier methodology. The empirical findings reveal that economic stability exerts a positive influence on financial stability, whereas economic uncertainty negatively affects financial stability only in the long run. The causality analysis further indicates a unidirectional causal flow from economic stability and economic uncertainty to financial stability, in line with the coefficient estimates. Additionally, the results demonstrate bidirectional linkages between financial stability and economic stability.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026The Impact of Financial Stability, Globalization, and Economic Stability on Ecological Footprint From the Perspective of EKC Hypothesis: New Evidence From a Fourier Panel Data Analysis for BRICS-T Countries

The Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis, which states that the increase in growth up to a certain income level increases environmental pollution and the increase in growth after reaching this income level decreases environmental pollution, has recently started to be investigated by including economic development and financial development in the framework of this hypothesis to better investigate the hypothesis. This study aims to investigate the impact of financial stability, economic stability, globalization, energy use, and growth on the ecological footprint in Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and Turkey. In addition, the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis is also tested while examining this relationship. The Panel Fourier approach is applied to test these relationships in Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and Turkey over the period 1996–2022. The coefficient estimation results show that economic stability, economic globalization, growth, and energy use have a positive impact on the ecological footprint in Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and Turkey, but financial stability reduces the ecological footprint. Moreover, an inverted-N relationship was found between economic growth and pollution in these countries, which means that the Environmental Kuznets Curve is invalid in these countries in the relevant period. The results obtained from causality analysis support the results of coefficient estimation. Accordingly, a unidirectional causality was found from explanatory variables to the ecological footprint in most of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and Turkey.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2022The Effect of Unemployment and Urbanization on Migration in Turkey: An Evaluation in terms of the Harris-Todaro Model; [Türkiye’de İşsizlik ve Kentleşmenin Göç Üzerindeki Etkisi: Harris-Todaro Modeli Açısından Bir Değerlendirme]
Sancar, Canan; Akbaş, Yusuf Ekrem
This study tested whether there was a relationship between migration, unemployment, and urbanization based on the Harris-Todaro model in 12 regions of Turkey, which were formed according to NUTS-1 classification, in the period between 2008 and 2019. For this purpose, panel data methods that consider cross-section dependency were used in the study. As a result of the analysis, it was concluded that the Harris-Todaro model was valid in TR1, TR2, TR3, TR4, TR5, and TR6 regions. In TR7, TR8, TR9, TRA, TRB, and TRC regions, it was found that the Harris-Todaro model was not valid.
- MakaleYalnız künye2021The impact of export dynamics on trade balance in emerging and developed countries: An evaluation with middle income trap perspective
Akbas, Yusuf Ekrem; Sancar, Canan
In this study, it was analyzed whether the export dynamics affected net exports in fourteen emerging countries and eight developed countries between the years of 1995–2019. Export sophistication, export product diversification, export market diversification, export product concentration, export market concentration, and real effective exchange rate were used as the proxy of export dynamics. Panel data methods that take into account cross-section dependency and structural breaks were used for the analysis. As a result of the study, in developed countries, it was concluded that export sophistication, export product concentration, and export market diversification positively affected the net export, and the real effective exchange rate negatively affected the net export. For the emerging countries, it was concluded that export market concentration and real exchange rate negatively affected the net exports. Also, in emerging countries, it was found that export sophistication and export product diversification do not have any impact on net exports since export sophistication and export product diversification are not an adequately high level compared to developed countries for increasing the net export. The fact that in these countries the proportion of high-tech product exports are low in total exports and the product range in exports are not wide cause these indexes to be low. This situation poses a significant risk in terms of falling into the middle-income trap.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2019The effect of interest rate on output level and inflation in Turkey: Evaluation of monetarist and new keynesian perspective
Akbas, Yusuf Ekrem; Sancar, Canan
In this paper, the relationship between inflation-interest rate and output level for the period between 2000M1-2015M12 in Turkey is evaluated in terms of Monetarist and New Keynesian perspective. These relationships among the variables are analysed through linear and non-linear methods. As a result of the analysis, it is concluded that the interest rate does not have a significant effect on the output level. Also, it was determined that there is a short-term as well as a long-term negative relationship from the interest rate towards inflation. It was concluded that the monetary policy cannot affect the real output, but the inflation. These results show that the Monetarist perspective is more valid for the post 2000 period in Turkey.
- MakaleYalnız künye2014Empirical findings on triplet deficits hypothesis: The case of Turkey
Şen, Ali; Şentürk, Mehmet; Sancar, Canan; Akbaş, Yusuf Ekrem
The aim of this study is to investigate the concept of triplet deficits in Turkey between 1980 and 2010. "Dolado-Lütkepohl Granger Causality Analysis" was performed in order to determine the direction of the relationship among the variables. In addition, the Vector Autoregressive (VAR), Variance Decomposition and Impulse-Response analysis were performed to determine the degree to which variables affected each other. The study finds that triplet deficit hypothesis was valid in Turkey between 1980 and 2010.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2014The relationship between capital flows and current deficit: Evidence from Turkey
Akbas, Yusuf Ekrem; Senturk, Mehmet; Sancar, Canon
The present paper analyzed the relationship between current account deficit and capital flows in Turkey over the period from 1990-2011. Augmented Dickey Fuller and Dickey Fuller-Generalized Least Squares unit root tests were used to analyze the stability of current deficit (CA) and capital flows (CF) series. Then, autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bound test was used in order to check if there is cointegration between the series according to the results obtained from the ARDL test. To conclude, the study revealed that is a cointegration relationship between current deficit and capital flows in Turkey.
- MakaleYalnız künye2013The relationship among the current deficit - Short term capital movements and economic growth: Evidence from Turkey
Akbas, Yusuf Ekrem; Senturk, Mehmet; Sancar, Canan; Akyazi, Haydar
In this study, it was analysed if there is a short and long term relationship among the current deficit, short-term capital movements and the economic growth within the periods of 1998Q1-2011Q4 in Turkey. It was used to Autoregressive Distributed Lag model for analyzing the series. As a result of the Autoregressive Distributed Lag model test, it was confirmed the co-integration relationship among the series related to current deficit, economic growth and short term capital flows in short term and long term.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2013Testing for causality between the foreign direct investment, current account deficit, GDP and total credit: Evidence from G7
Akbas, Yusuf Ekrem; Senturk, Mehmet; Sancar, Canan
In this study, countries were analyzed between 1990 and 2011 in order to determine whether a causal relationship exists among current account deficit, GDP, foreign direct investment, and total credits of G7. Analysis took into account the cross-sectional dependence and was applied to test the causality among the variables form the panel. Firstly, panel unit root tests were used for determining stationary of variables. As a result of the panel unit root tests, it was found that GDP and foreign direct investment have a stationary structure and that total credits and current account deficit contain unit root. In order to see whether there is a long-term relationship among the variables or not, the panel co-integration test was used. As a result of the test, it was concluded that there is a co-integration relationship among the series. The possibility of a causal relationship was analyzed among the variables using the causality test developed by Elena Ivona Dumitrescu and Christophe Hurlin (2012). Results of the analysis showed a unidirectional causal relationship from current account deficit and foreign direct investment to GDP. Bidirectional causality was found between current account deficit and total credits. Finally, a unidirectional relationship was found from foreign direct investment to current account deficit and total credits.
