Öztürk, Serkan; Maden, Nafiz; Beker, Yasemin; Sari, Mahmut; Pehlivan, Levent

    Beker, Yasemin; Sayil, Nilgun

Estimation of ground types in different districts of Gümüşhane province based on the ambient vibrations H/V measurements

Öztürk, Serkan; Beker, Yasemin; Sari, Mahmut; Pehlıvan, Levent

In this study, an attempt was made to estimate the ground types for Torul, Kürtün, Kelkit, Şiran and Köse districts of Gümüşhane, Turkey, by analyzing the predominant frequency and H/V ratio from microtremor data through the single station microtremor H/V ratio of Nakamura technique. For all districts, predominant frequencies show a general distribution between 1.36 and 9.84 Hz, H/V ratios between 1.01 and 9.58. According to these variations, three transient zones can be suggested as i) Z1, stiff rock composed of gravel, sand and other soils mainly consisting of tertiary or older layers with period of 0.1 to 0.2s, ii) Z2, sandy gravel, stiff sandy clay, loam or sandy alluvial deposits whose depths are 5m or greater with period of 0.2 to 0.4s, and iii) Z3, standard grounds other than type Z1, Z2 or Z4 (alluvial deposits whose depths are 5m or greater) with period of 0.4 to 0.8s. These r esults s uggest that p redominant period obtained from predominant frequency shows significant changes based on the soil formation, and H/V ratio highly corresponds to these subsurface properties. Soil-structure interaction can also be evaluated by considering these results and possible resonance risk can be investigated for building resonant frequency in these residential districts in the next. Thus, this type of application and evaluation of microtremor data may provide primary and useful information for other geophysical, geological and geotechnical studies such as planning the seismic resistant infrastructure, detecting the small-scale seismic risks and making a suitable and reliable seismic hazard microzonation in Gümüşhane. Natural Events and Earth Sciences Observations in the Chronicle of Theophanes

Maden, Nafiz; Beker, Yasemin; Nazir, Bayram

The purpose of this work is the natural phenomena and earth sciences observations recorded in the chronicle of the Byzantine historian Theophanes from AD 284 to 813. Theophanes was born in 758/760 in Istanbul as a child of a wealthy and aristocratic family and died in exile of Samothroke island in 818. His mother name is Theodora and his father is Isaakios, the governor of the Mediterranean islands of the Byzantine Empire. Theophanes decided to continue unfinished chronic of Georgios Synkellos who died in the year 810/811 with the encouragement and desire of him. He completed his work entitled “Chronographia” covering the period between 284 and 813 years in 810-814. The chronicle of Theophanes including 90 natural events and earth sciences records is very important in terms of using very old and lost resources.

Determination of the dynamic characteristics of the faculty building of engineering and natural science with hvsr method and fsr method

    Beker, Y.; Sayıl, N.

Seismic response characteristics of structures can be estimated by spectral ratios of microtremors measured on structures and their foundation ground surface. The microtremor horizontal-to-vertical-spectral-ratio (HVSR) technique has received great attention from all over the world with its simplicity together with quick information about dynamic characteristics of ground and structures. The HVSR of microtremors gives a good estimation of natural building frequency. In this study, Nakamura (H/V) method and Floor Spectral Ratio Method (FSR) has been applied to microtremor records taken with three component broad band velocity seismometers in seven different locations inside the building (ground floor; east and west side for second, fourth and sixth floor) and one at outside with the aim of determining the dynamic characteristics of Faculty building of Engineering and Natural Science at Gumushane University, in NE Turkey. The average predominant frequency, period and amplification values for the Faculty building are calculated. The ratio of amplitude spectrum of the upper floors to amplitude spectrum of the ground floor for both of horizontal components (East-West, North-South) is determined using FSR Method. The vibration frequency and period is around 4.0 Hz and 0.332 s, respectively. Also, the damping ratio and vulnerability were calculated to the Faculty building.

Determination of the ground-building relationships in the KTU campus area with microtremor measurements

    Beker, Y.; Sayil, N.; Akin, O.; Coban, K.H.

Microtremor measurement obtained by ground vibrations is one of the useful methods for determination of ground characteristics. Also the method has been using to specify building resonance risk during earthquakes in the last decades. In this study, single station microtremor recordings have been taken on the ground and at the 6 buildings in the KTU campus area. The measurements taken on the ground and in the buildings have been evaluated by Nakamura (H/V ratio) method. The eastern of the campus area presents Class-IV and the middle and western part of the campus present Class-II- Class-III according to Kanai and Tanaka ground classification. The predominant frequencies of the buildings are not in a harmony with the values of the ground. It can be deduce that the resonance risk is low for these buildings during the earthquakes. The H/V ratios of the ground change between 1-3 and lower than the buildings ratios which change between 5.0-8.5.
