The Effect of Match Running on Team Success in Professional Soccer

Tokul, Erdi; Mülazimoglu, Olcay; Özkara, Abdullah Bora; Özçilingir, Ozgun Mirac; Somoglu, Mustafa Baris; Turan, Cagatay; Baskaya, Gizem; Erdem, Kamil

This study aimed to examine match running performance (RP) in professional soccer teams in terms of success variables. A total of 626 observations obtained via a multicamera tracking system (InStat Ltd.) from a total of 323 matches played by 19 teams in the Turkish Super League (TSL) during a season were analyzed. The success of the teams was examined as two different independent variables: i) according to the endof-season final table ranking (1st rank: the first five teams that have qualified for the European League; 2nd rank: the second rank five teams; 3rd rank: the third rank five teams; and 4th rank: the four relegated teams). ii) According to the match outcome (win, draw, loss). The RP variables included total distance (TD), covered distance in five speed zones (walking, jogging, running, high-speed running (HSR) and sprinting), high-intensity acceleration (HIA) and maximum acceleration. ANOVA and post hoc tests revealed that 1strank teams were significantly more common in running, HSR, sprinting and acceleration (p < .05). There was no difference between the TD groups (p > .05). The TD, walking sprinting and max. acceleration values of the winning teams were greater (p < .05). The short-term success goal for teams is to win a match or score a point, and the long-term goal is to be at the top of the final table in the season. Therefore, the current research revealed that high-intensity RPs and high intensity acceleration in matches are especially decisive in the success of teams.

Determining the Factors Affecting Football Fans' Satisfaction with Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Technology; [Futbol Taraftarlarının Video Yardımcı Hakem (VAR)’e Yönelik Memnuniyetlerini Etkileyen Faktörlerin Belirlenmesi]

    Avci, İbrahim; Ayik, Öznur

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology has been introduced in the sports industry as a decision support system designed to assist referees in making the correct decisions when overseeing a sporting event. In Turkey, VAR technology has been deployed to lessen controversies in football matches, but it has not completely eliminated them. As a result, it is crucial to establish whether fans, a key stakeholder in the sports sector, are satisfied with VAR technology. In this context, the study aims to investigate the effects of football fans' perceived value and identification with VAR technology on their satisfaction with it. Furthermore, the mediating role of attitudes towards the technology and the moderating role of knowledge about VAR technology will also be examined. The study used the snowball sampling method, and data were obtained via an online survey, with 411 fans participating over the data collection period. Using the fan data, Structural Equation Modeling was performed using the AMOS tool, and the study hypotheses were tested. The research revealed that identification and perceived value of VAR technology have a positive effect on satisfaction with this technology, with attitude toward technology acting as a mediator. The level of knowledge about VAR technology has a moderating effect in the relationship between satisfaction and perceived value. These findings have practical and theoretical implications for both the sports sector and the academic discipline.

Life Satisfaction and Subjective Well-Being on the Road to Happiness: An Application of Structural Equation Modeling; [Mutluluğa Giden Yolda Yaşam Doyumu ve Öznel Zindelik: Bir Yapısal Eşitlik Modeli Uygulaması]

Somoğlu, Mustafa Barış; Yazici, Ömer Faruk; Paktaş, Yakup; İşbilir, Emine

This study aims to examine the relationships between happiness, life satisfaction, and subjective vitality among student-athletes. Conducted using a correlational survey design, the research included a total of 400 students (149 female and 251 male; Mean age = 21.31 ± 2.32) enrolled in sports sciences programs across three different universities. The data collection tools utilized were the “Subjective Happiness Scale (SHS),” the “Subjective Vitality Scale (SVS),” and the “Life Satisfaction Scale (LSS).” The suitability of the data for analysis was assessed based on skewness and kurtosis values. Data analysis was performed using IBM AMOS V25 software (Chicago, USA), and the relationships between happiness, life satisfaction, and subjective vitality were tested through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). According to the results of the structural equation model, the path coefficients between vitality, life satisfaction, and happiness were found to be significant. In this context, life satisfaction explains 44% of subjective happiness, while subjective vitality accounts for 54% of. Based on this, it can be suggested that increasing individuals' levels of life satisfaction and subjective vitality may also enhance their levels of happiness.
